Black Lips Don't Turn Blue: A Womanist Critique Of Discriminatory Language In Medical Education, Alison Lawrence Jul 2021

Black Lips Don't Turn Blue: A Womanist Critique Of Discriminatory Language In Medical Education, Alison Lawrence

Womanist Ethics

This paper examines race and gender inequities in healthcare as it pertains to the unequal presentation of descriptors of illness in medical textbooks. The author adopts a womanist perspective to criticize the use of the white male body as the standard for all patients, which causes signs and symptoms in women and people of color to be dismissed as less important. Following an analysis of normalizing language in current medical texts as well as its consequences for patients, the author calls for a system-wide shift to more inclusive, intersectional medical education that not only acknowledges differences among patient groups, but …

Faculty and Student Publications

Discoveries of novel myxobacteria have started to unveil the potentially vast phylogenetic diversity within the family Myxococcaceae and have brought about an updated approach to myxobacterial classification. While traditional approaches focused on morphology, 16S gene sequences, and biochemistry, modern methods including comparative genomics have provided a more thorough assessment of myxobacterial taxonomy. Herein, we utilize long-read genome sequencing for two myxobacteria previously classified as Archangium primigenium and Chondrococcus macrosporus, as well as four environmental myxobacteria newly isolated for this study. Average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization scores from comparative genomics suggest previously classified as A. primigenium to instead be …

Malignant Hyperthermia, Joel Jackson Jul 2021

Malignant Hyperthermia, Joel Jackson

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a hypermetabolic response to succinylcholine or inhaled volatile gases administered during anesthesia and is caused by an autosomal dominant mutation of RYR1 or CACNA1S genes which affect how calcium channels function. The uncontrolled, unopposed calcium release and excitation-contraction coupling results in sustained skeletal muscle contraction resulting in muscle rigidity, hyperthermia, hypercapnia, hypertension, and tachycardia among other less common clinical features. The sequelae of an MH crisis include renal failure, rhabdomyolysis, hyperkalemia, metabolic disturbance and left untreated will result in mortality. All clinicians involved in peri-operative care both in-hospital and out of hospital must be cognizant of …
