Predictors Of Goal Attainment Among High School Students In Accelerated Academic Curricula Receiving School-Based Motivational Interviewing Intervention, Camille E. Hanks
Predictors Of Goal Attainment Among High School Students In Accelerated Academic Curricula Receiving School-Based Motivational Interviewing Intervention, Camille E. Hanks
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs represent a unique group of adolescents given the high demands of their rigorous coursework and the elevated stress they experience compared to peers in the general education (Suldo & Shaunessy-Dedrick, 2013). These students are often missed in traditional screening procedures that tend to identify students struggling academically or exhibiting disruptive behaviors. Fortunately, Shaunessy-Dedrick and colleagues (2021) developed a comprehensive school-based intervention program, including universal (Tier 1) and selective (Tier 2) components, which aims to support the well-being of AP/IB students. The Tier 2 component of this program (i.e., …

The Intersection Of Hiv, Covid-19 And Systemic Racism, Gary F. Spinner
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
ABSTRACT
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) pandemic has taken the greatest toll on racial and ethnic minorities in the United States. Blacks and Latinxs suffer greater disease incidence, prevalence, morbidity and mortality from HIV as compared with Whites. Similarly, the Covid-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has disproportionately affected Blacks, Latinxs, and Native Americans causing higher rates of infection, more severe disease, and higher rates of mortality as compared with Whites. The pandemic of racism is as ubiquitous as the pandemics of HIV and Covid-19. Its sustaining forces drive wealth inequality, poverty, racially segregated and overcrowded housing, unequal employment opportunities, unequal …

This paper seeks to evaluate the potential efficacy of a community gardening intervention on the Navajo Nation to increase gardening and healthy eating behaviors, which are potentially important in preventing obesity and related health conditions. Rates of obesity are high among American Indians, including those living on Navajo Nation land. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is part of healthy eating. However, availability and access to fresh fruits and vegetables are severely limited on the Navajo Nation, due to distance and cost. One way to increase both availability and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is through community gardening, yet …

Prostate Cancer: Social, Economic And Demographic Correlates Of Non Use Of Supplemental Diets Among Black Men In Florida, Jemal Gishe, Getachew Dagne, Mohamed Kanu, Kushal Patel, Revlon Briggs, Folakemi Odedina, Francis Pleban
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Background: Epidemiologic data consistently show that Black men in the U.S. are disproportionately affected by prostate cancer. The incidence rate is 60% higher and death rate is 2.1 times more for Black men compared to Whites. There is growing evidence from literature that nutritional supplements, such as selenium, lycopene, vitamin A, vitamin D and soy may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. However, the level of knowledge and usage of these supplemental diets among Black men is low. Therefore, it is important to understand why Black men are low users of the supplemental diets and develop intervention programs to change …

Health Disparities And Covid-19 Pandemic: Increasing Clinical Research Participation Among African Americans, Kashica J. Webber-Ritchey, Abbi D. Lane-Cordova
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Health disparities in African Americans is a persistent issue. Higher rates and severity of the novel coronavirus-19 [COVID-19] among African Americans only widens health disparities. Effective COVID-19 treatment options are imperative, requiring representation of African Americans in clinical research. However, low participation and under-representation of African Americans is complex in nature. This article describes health disparities, the impact of COVID-19, and participation in clinical research among African Americans. We offer strategies for researchers to enhance the inclusion of African Americans. We also offer strategies in conducting clinical research during COVID-19.

Social Injustice And Pediatric Health: Pediatric Covid-19 Guidelines Are Exacerbating Health Disparities, Sneha Thamotharan
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Fewer cases of COVID-19 and hospitalizations have been reported in children. This has impacted the prioritization of pediatrics in understanding the infection, transmission, and treatment of SARS-CoV-2 in children. Unfortunately, COVID-19 rates are higher among racial and ethnic minoritized children. Simultaneously unfolding during this pandemic is a national outcry to address systemic injustice, including institutional racism in healthcare which are driving these disparities. Aligned with social justice, this paper reflects on how Pediatric COVID-19 guidelines may be exacerbating existing health disparities among racial and ethnic minoritized youth, as well as urges for and provides possible ways to culturally tailor current …

Stream Sediment Monitoring In Morehead Kentucky, Kristopher Krolikowski, Jen O'Keefe
2021 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Oral Presentations
Sediment loads in stream systems play a big role in how overall runoff behaves. Streams naturally transport sediment at various ratios depending on precipitation. When vegetation is removed in upstream environments, sediment loads on streams increase. Sudden increases of sediments in streams can cause many issues, such as flooding or stream re-direction. In Morehead, KY, large-scale logging operations on the ridge above Knapp Avenue and on the ridge above the north end of Allen Avenue have caused increased sediment load in a small stream called Oxley Branch. This stream flows south parallel to Knapp Avenue and along the eastern property …

Efficacy Of Quikclot Combat Gauze When Used By Immediate Responders In A Simulated Gunshot Wound, Brenden Feingerts
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Gunshot wounds sustained by civilians in the context of active shooter events are distressingly common in the United States. Current guidelines recommend the use of advanced hemostatic dressings as the first-line treatment for gunshot wounds sustained to anatomical areas in which a tourniquet cannot be effectively deployed. These guidelines have been informed by studies conducted in military and surgical settings by trained medical personnel, however, no studies have been conducted to assess their efficacy when utilized by untrained civilian bystanders. In this study, we will compare the efficacy of QuikClot Combat Gauze to standard gauze for achieving hemostasis when utilized …
Efficacy Of Rimegepant Plus Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide Monoclonal Antibody For Migraine, Carina Leggio
Efficacy Of Rimegepant Plus Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide Monoclonal Antibody For Migraine, Carina Leggio
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Migraine is a paroxysmal pain disorder managed with abortive therapy during a pain attack, prophylactic therapy to prevent attacks, and often a combination of both. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and its receptor have a role in the provocation of migraines, and therefore have been targeted in the development of both preventive and abortive therapies. However, there is limited research investigating concomitant use of the therapies. This study will examine the safety and efficacy of oral rimegepant when used for acute treatment concomitantly with a monoclonal antibody (mAb) targeting the CGRP ligand or receptor for the preventive treatment of migraine. A …

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Major depressive disorder is one of the most common and burdensome psychiatric disorders. Many individuals still experience symptoms despite pharmacological treatment. Breathing techniques have shown potential for stress, depression, and anxiety reduction. A second promising treatment are mindfulness-based interventions, which have been shown to effectively decrease depression with fewer side effects than pharmacological agents. Both interventions are accessible via remote instruction. This study will investigate the effect of Sudarshan Kriya Yoga breathwork on depression symptoms. Using a prospective, randomized controlled trial, subjects will receive Sudarshan Kriya Yoga, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, or standard care for 8-weeks. We will measure changes …

Coronary Angiogram Plus Invasive Physiologic Tests In Women With Nonobstructive Coronary Dysfunction, Megan Mccauley
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the Western hemisphere. Women with ischemic heart disease typically present to the emergency department with acute coronary syndrome, and subsequently undergo coronary angiography. In 66% of women, no evidence of obstructive disease is found, and current standard of care recommends no further diagnostic testing. However, nonobstructive diseases cannot be ruled out with coronary angiography alone and therefore are frequently missed. This study will examine whether invasive physiological testing with coronary angiography can impact multiple adverse cardiac events in adult women. Using a prospective comparative effectiveness trial, we will …

The COVID 19 pandemic has necessitated several containment measures including full or partial remote learning for some children and adolescents. Displacement from school is known to be socially isolating with the potential to impact child behavior. However, the direction of effect of pandemic school closures on the emotional well-being of children and adolescents is not yet clear. This study aims to determine the effect of remote learning on emotional and behavioral changes in children and adolescents. Using participants from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study, this longitudinal prospective cohort study will compare mean, current, and follow-up scores on the Child …
Sexual Function In Women Undergoing Risk Reducing Salpingo-Oophorectomy With Or Without Hysterectomy, Madeline Perez
Sexual Function In Women Undergoing Risk Reducing Salpingo-Oophorectomy With Or Without Hysterectomy, Madeline Perez
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomies are offered to women with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndromes as prophylaxis to reduce the incidence of ovarian cancer. These surgeries induce acute surgical menopause and often result in compromised sexual function including decreased desire, sexual discomfort, and diminished sexual satisfaction. However, little is known about the differences in sexual function in women who undergo surgery with hysterectomy versus those that leave their uterus intact. Using a prospective cohort study, we will compare the effects of Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy alone versus Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy plus hysterectomy on sexual function in premenopausal women with breast cancer gene mutations. We will …
The Effect Of Plasma Levels Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 On Intracranial Aneurysm Progression, Peter Stampfel
The Effect Of Plasma Levels Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 On Intracranial Aneurysm Progression, Peter Stampfel
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Intracranial aneurysms are a common vascular abnormality identified incidentally or after rupture leading to aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. However, accurately assessing the risk of aneurysmal disease progression is challenging. Here we propose a prospective cohort study to identify if elevated levels of matrix metalloproteinase-9, a molecular marker of vascular degeneration, in the peripheral blood samples of subjects with unruptured intracranial aneurysms correlate with aneurysm progression over a follow up period. This study aims to aid in identifying patients at increased risk of aneurysm progression in order to guide treatment decisions and ultimately decrease subarachnoid hemorrhage morbidity and mortality.
Spiritual Direction Practice In Physician Associates, Nicholas Nielsen
Spiritual Direction Practice In Physician Associates, Nicholas Nielsen
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Burnout affects nearly 50% of healthcare providers including physician associates throughout their professions. The extent of burnout experienced is directly related to the life satisfaction of these providers and to the level of care they provide their patients. One effective way to combat burnout is emotional intelligence practice, but there is little evidence to suggest that incorporating spiritual well-being can reduce burnout and improve life satisfaction in clinicians. In this study, we will assess the effect of spiritual guided practice on burnout and life satisfaction in physician associates. Using a non-blinded randomized control trial, we will select inpatient hospitalist physician …
Early Use Of Vaginal Progesterone And Cervical Pessary To Reduce Preterm Birth Rates In Twins, Thomas Vulaj
Early Use Of Vaginal Progesterone And Cervical Pessary To Reduce Preterm Birth Rates In Twins, Thomas Vulaj
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Preterm birth is one of the most common causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. The incidence of preterm birth can be reduced by treatment with vaginal progesterone or cervical pessary. However, no studies have supported a treatment regimen that can reduce preterm birth in twin pregnancies. In this study, we will examine whether a combination therapy of vaginal progesterone and cervical pessary can reduce preterm birth in women with dichorionic-diamniotic twin gestations. We will enroll pregnant women with dichorionic-diamniotic twins at 11-14 weeks’ gestation from a local hospital in a randomized control trial. This novel approach may help establish a …

Increasing Extubation Awareness During Interdisciplinary Rounds With A Rounding Tool In The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (Picu)., Lilly Giang
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Purpose: Prolonged duration of mechanical ventilation and endotracheal tube intubation are associated with longer length of stay and increases risk for infection by about 3% per day when mechanically ventilated (Mirzarahimi et al., 2020). Evidence suggests that the use of a rounding tool during interdisciplinary rounds improves clinical outcomes, reduce duration of mechanical ventilation, and decrease length of stay in the PICU. The aim of the project was to measure registered nurses and PICU providers perception of the extubation prompts and determine if the extubation prompts decrease duration of mechanical ventilation and length of stay. Methods: After extensive review of …
