Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States (HHS ODPHP, 2019). It is also the leading cause of chronic disease complications such as adult-onset blindness, kidney failure, and lower-limb amputations (HHS ODPHP, 2019). It is recommended that all people with diabetes should participate in diabetes self-management education (ADA, 2018). Purpose: The purpose of this DNP project is to evaluate the effectiveness of diabetes group education by assessing participants’ knowledge utilizing the diabetes knowledge test (DKT) at an outpatient diabetes care center in Louisville KY. The evidence from the literature review supports the importance …
The Implementation Of A Standardized Car Safety Seat Discharge Teaching To Improve Self-Efficacy In Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurses., Madeline Sass
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: There is a lack of standardization for car safety seat education to caregivers before hospital discharge. Nationally, 59% of motor vehicle accident deaths occur because the car seat is misused (Greenwall, 2015). The American Academy of Pediatrics (1999) states this is a gap in care because all caregivers need to receive proper car safety seat instruction before discharge. Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to increase nursing self-efficacy and compliance of registered nurses (RNs) by implementing a standardized CSS discharge intervention. Methods: RNs on the unit were educated with a 7-minute presentation video titled “Car Seat Safety: Discharge Teaching” …

COVID-19 has reshaped our lives, the global economy, and the geopolitical landscape in unimaginable ways. Socio-economic disruptions are keenly felt across every sector in every country and irreversible damage has been done to our collective health and livelihood opportunities. From a health crisis, the pandemic has insidiously unfolded into a human one - where efforts taken to contain the virus have resulted in the targeting and/or neglect of vulnerable populations, the exacerbation of structural inequalities, and the pushback against fundamental rights and freedoms. The prolonging of this health crisis has also accentuated the need for better governance as questions of …

A Quality Improvement Initiative: Combination Oral Contraception And Counseling For Sexually Active Adolescent Girls 12-18 Years Old, Angelica Del Toro
Cohort IX
According to the 2016 “U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use” and the “U.S. Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use,” published by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), sexually active adolescents benefit from oral contraception and counseling from their primary care practitioners, as they already have an existing relationship. As a family nurse practitioner, I could provide an initial assessment and prescribe the appropriate contraceptive instead of referring them to a gynecologist.
I learned this in my practice during a 10-day reflective practice log. After a literature review and several supporting articles, I received …

The goal was to understand mindfulness mechanisms of emotion regulation and body awareness and how these relate to interoceptive and proprioceptive awareness. The 23 participants completed the Five Factor Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ; Baer et al., 2006) and the Multidimensional Assessment of Interceptive Awareness (MAIA; Mehling et al., 2012). Then, the participants completed a procedure on the purpose-built Active Movement Extent Discrimination Apparatus (AMEDA; Symes et al., 2010), a device used to measure proprioception at the ankle joint. The entire procedure took one hour to complete. Results did not support the hypothesis that higher levels of mindfulness were related to higher …
Integrating Minority Stress Theory Into Suicide Risk Models For Sexual Minority Women, Meredith Ballard Whitfield
Integrating Minority Stress Theory Into Suicide Risk Models For Sexual Minority Women, Meredith Ballard Whitfield
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Suicide remains the 10th leading cause of death in the United States in which there is a large disparity in prevalence of suicide ideation and attempts among sexual minority individuals and heterosexual counterparts. Furthermore, it has been established that sexual minority women are at increased risk of suicidality even when compared to sexual minority men. Despite this large disparity in suicidal behavior, there is a dearth of research dedicated to assessing negative mental health outcomes in sexual minority women. Although the common theoretical model of suicide (IPTS) hypothesizes that one must have neglected interpersonal psychological needs and acquired capability, further …

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Unresolved childhood trauma, known as adverse childhood experiences (ACES), have been found previously to lead to a plethora of health disparities and increase the risk for problematic substance use, particularly alcohol use. However, protective factors, such as social support have been found to buffer against these consequences. The goal of this study was to highlight the connection between ACES and problematic alcohol use. Additionally, the aim was to investigate perceived social support as a moderator between ACES and problematic alcohol use and to examine the domains of social support and how they individually moderate the association between ACES and social …

Building Cultural Competency Among Emerging Public Health Professionals: Student Experiences In Panama, Matthew Fifolt, Meena Nabavi, Erika L. Austin, Lisa C. Mccormick
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
One of the prerequisite skills of effective public health and health practitioners is cultural competency. Cultural competency, however, requires a deep and profound understanding of individuals who are shaped by different life experiences than one’s own. Previous authors have described study abroad and service-learning as established strategies for enhancing cultural competency among emerging health professionals. This article describes how students made meaning of an international study abroad experience in Panama through analysis of student-produced work including reflective journal entries, blog posts, and photo journaling.
In summer 2019, 13 undergraduate and graduate students participated in a four-week travel course to explore …

Treating mental illnesses in primary care is increasingly emphasized to improve access to mental health services. Although family physicians (FPs) or general practitioners are in an ideal position to provide the bulk of mental health care, it is unclear how best to remunerate FPs for the adequate provision of mental health services. We examined the quantity of mental health services provided in Ontario's blended fee-for-service and blended capitation models. We evaluated the impact of FPs switching from blended fee-for-service to blended capitation on the provision of mental health services in primary care and emergency department using longitudinal health administrative data …
"We Need To Genuinely Listen To What People Tell Us They Need": Identifying How To Support Individuals Living With Mental Illness And/Or Substance Use Difficulties To Thrive Following Homelessness In London, Ontario, Carrie Marshall
Occupational Therapy Publications
While unhoused, persons who have experienced homelessness are frequently consumed with securing the necessary conditions to meet their basic needs including finding a place to stay for the night, finding food, and keeping safe. It is frequently assumed that when individuals secure a tenancy following homelessness, that their life naturally improves for the better in most or all areas of their lives. Unfortunately, recent research suggests that many individuals who secure housing after homelessness continue to live in a state of survival. While the importance of supporting individuals to secure and sustain housing cannot be understated, other aspects of a …

Rapid Microscopic Fractional Anisotropy Imaging Via An Optimized Linear Regression Formulation., N J J Arezza, D H Y Tse, C A Baron
Medical Biophysics Publications
Water diffusion anisotropy in the human brain is affected by disease, trauma, and development. Microscopic fractional anisotropy (μFA) is a diffusion MRI (dMRI) metric that can quantify water diffusion anisotropy independent of neuron fiber orientation dispersion. However, there are several different techniques to estimate μFA and few have demonstrated full brain imaging capabilities within clinically viable scan times and resolutions. Here, we present an optimized spherical tensor encoding (STE) technique to acquire μFA directly from the 2nd order cumulant expansion of the powder averaged dMRI signal obtained from direct linear regression (i.e. diffusion kurtosis) which requires fewer powder-averaged signals than …

Mammalian orienting behavior consists of coordinated movements of the eyes, head, pinnae, vibrissae, or body to attend to an external stimulus. The present study aimed to develop a novel operant task using a touch-screen system to measure spatial attention. In this task, rats were trained to nose-poke a light stimulus presented in one of three locations. The stimulus was presented more frequently in the center location to develop spatial attention bias toward the center stimulus. Changes in orienting responses were detected by measuring the animals’ response accuracy and latency to stimuli at the lateral locations, following reversible unilateral chemogenetic inactivation …
Community-Based Wound Care Intervention Utilizing Non-Clinical Personnel In The Intravenous Drug Use Population., Jennifer Fox
Community-Based Wound Care Intervention Utilizing Non-Clinical Personnel In The Intravenous Drug Use Population., Jennifer Fox

Why New Diseases Keep Popping Up, Alan L. Gillen, Jason Conrad
Faculty Publications and Presentations
New and reemerging diseases are terrifying and concerning problems. Not only do they carry a financial and emotional toll, but they account for significant numbers of death. Emerging diseases are usually zoonotic and highly virulent in nature. These are pathogenic and parasitic diseases of high consequence and impact. Why would a good Creator allow these new diseases? Why do new diseases keep popping up? Mutation and displacement of original types of microbes account for many new diseases; however, the answer is more complex than just these two factors. Zoonoses are the most common type of infection, specifically from viral pathogens, …
