"Get Tough!": A Case Study On The Development Of The Sport Ethic In Youth Lacrosse, Ross Budziszewski Apr 2019

"Get Tough!": A Case Study On The Development Of The Sport Ethic In Youth Lacrosse, Ross Budziszewski

Student Research Symposium

While participation in youth sport is often linked with positive psychosocial and physical outcomes (Holt et al., 2017), this context can also cultivate ideals that lead to the development of unethical beliefs and unsafe sport practices (Al-Yaarbi & Kavussanu, 2017). The sport ethic is described as the deviant overconformity by an athlete to fit societal expectations of a sport's high-performance culture (Hughes & Coakley, 1991). Strong beliefs in the sport ethic can lead to moral disengagement, antisocial behavior, and treating sport like warfare (Shields, Funk, & Bredemeier, 2015). Although the sport ethic has been widely studied in competitive adult sport, …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer patients with KRAS mutation(s) have a poor prognosis due in part to the development of resistance to currently available therapeutic interventions. Development of a new class of anticancer agents that directly targets KRAS may provide a more attractive option for the treatment of KRAS-mutant lung cancer.

RESULTS: Here we identified a small molecule KRAS agonist, KRA-533, that binds the GTP/GDP-binding pocket of KRAS. In vitro GDP/GTP exchange assay reveals that KRA-533 activates KRAS by preventing the cleavage of GTP into GDP, leading to the accumulation of GTP-KRAS, an active form of KRAS. Treatment of human lung cancer …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Cell-penetrating peptide [WR]5 has been previously shown to be an efficient molecular transporter for various hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules. The peptide was synthesized using Fmoc/tBu solid-phase chemistry, and one arginine was replaced with one lysine to enable the conjugation with the anticancer drugs. Paclitaxel (PTX) was functionalized with an esterification reaction at the C20 hydroxyl group of PTX with glutaric anhydride and conjugated with the cyclic peptide [W(WR)4K(bAla)] in DMF to obtain the peptide-drug conjugate PTX1. Furthermore, camptothecin (CPT) was modified at the C(20)-hydroxyl group through the reaction with triphosgene. Then, it was conjugated with two functionalized cyclic peptides through …

The Role Of Resilience And Preparedness In Nurses Working During Hurricane Disasters, Julie George Apr 2019

The Role Of Resilience And Preparedness In Nurses Working During Hurricane Disasters, Julie George

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Problem: Resilience is the ability to “bounce back” from adversity and can serve as an avenue for nurses to recover from the disaster and subsequent potential issues related to coping with the event. To date, very little is found in the literature specific to nurses and how they adapt to and recover from disasters in their personal or professional lives.

Theory: Taormina’s (2015) theory of adult personal resilience and Veenema’s disaster management model (World Health Organization [WHO] and International Council of Nurses [ICN], 2009) provided the foundation of this study.

Hypothesis: It is hypothesized that levels of personal and professional …

Histological chorioamnionitis (HCA) is an infection of fetal membranes and complicates 5.2% to 28.5% of all live births. HCA is associated with increased mortality and morbidity in both premature and term neonates. Exposure to HCA may have long-term consequences, including an increased risk for allergic disorders and asthma later in childhood, the mechanism(s) of which are still not yet well understood. The objective of this study was to determine the mRNA transcriptome of cord blood mononuclear leukocytes from term neonates to identify key genes and pathways involved in HCA. We found 366 differentially expressed probe IDs with exposure to HCA …

Board Invited Review: Prospects For Improving Management Of Animal Disease Introductions Using Disease-Dynamic Models, Ryan S. Miller, Kim M. Pepin

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Management and policy decisions are continually made to mitigate disease introductions in animal populations despite often limited surveillance data or knowledge of disease transmission processes. Science-based management is broadly recognized as leading to more effective decisions yet application of models to actively guide disease surveillance and mitigate risks remains limited. Disease-dynamic models are an efficient method of providing information for management decisions because of their ability to integrate and evaluate multiple, complex processes simultaneously while accounting for uncertainty common in animal diseases. Here we review disease introduction pathways and transmission processes crucial for informing disease management and models at the …

Dietary Supplement Safety: A 25 Year Retrospective Assessment, Bill Gurley Apr 2019

Dietary Supplement Safety: A 25 Year Retrospective Assessment, Bill Gurley

Oxford ICSB

Passage of the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act (DSHEA) in 1994 ushered in a new category of consumer products known as dietary supplements (DS). DSHEA’s definition of a dietary supplement encompasses a wide variety of products from multivitamins and single-ingredient botanical extracts, to “proprietary blends” of multiple botanical extracts and/or vitamins and minerals. Almost from their inception, safety concerns regarding certain categories of “proprietary blends” have plagued the DS industry. Most notable of these involved Ephedra-containing DS, whose questionable safety record led to their removal from the U.S. market in 2004 by the FDA after a 10-year period of …

Beyond The Sentimental Cliche: How Local Communities Impact Residents And Shape Public Opinion, Kate Brunk

Theses and Dissertations

The Trump administration has recently established a rule that will prohibit abortion services providers from receiving Title X funds for the non-abortion family planning services they provide. Little public opinion research has focused on family planning and reproductive health topics outside of abortion. I find statistically significant experimental evidence that increasing perceptions of local need for a local reproductive health clinic caused subjects to be more supportive of federal reproductive health funding for local clinics. I did not find statistically significant correlational evidence that objective measures of poor reproductive health at the county level influence public opinion on federal reproductive …
