Histomorphological And Histochemical Structure Of The Midgut And Hindgut Of The Caucasian Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera Caucasia), Ahmet Ceylan, Sedat Sevi̇n, Özge Özgenç

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The Caucasian honey bee (Apis mellifera caucasia subspecies of Apis mellifera L.) is one of the most common and prominent honey bee breeds in Turkey. The morphometry of endemic honey bee breeds has been extensively studied, but little attention has been given to the microscopic morphology of these bees. The aim of the current study was to describe for the first time the histomorphology of the midgut and hindgut of the Caucasian honey bee in Turkey. A total of 20 local Caucasian adult honey bee workers were sampled for histomorphological and histochemical analysis. The midgut epithelium consisted of epithelial cells …

The Comparing Of Homogenization Methods For Oxidative And Antioxidative Analyses Of Sperm, Ömer Varişli, Numan Akyol

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Pretreatment of sperm for oxidative and antioxidative analysis has been shown to be different in studies. These differences can affect the result of analyses. The aim of this study was to compare the analyses of sperm homogenization methods. The semen of four rams were used in the study. Pretreatment procedures included the rotary, bead, and ultrasonic homogenization methods. Oxidative and antioxidative status of sperm samples was assessed by measuring serum lipid hydroperoxide, total oxidant status, free sulfhydryl groups (SH total thiol), ceruloplasmin, and total antioxidant capacity levels. As a result, the homogenization methods before oxidative and antioxidative status analyses significantly …

Snake Envenomation In Two Cattle: Clinical/Laboratory Aspects And Treatment Using Equine-Derived Antivenin Of Viperidae, Nuri̇ Altuğ, Cafer Tayer İşler

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this case report, specific antivenin treatment for Viperidae snake envenomation in two cattle was defined for the first time. The diagnosis of snake envenomation was made according to the history and clinical findings. Clinical examination revealed systemic (tachycardia, dyspnea, cyanosis, hypersalivation, ruminal hypotony) and local (swelling of the leg and head) findings depending on the location of snake bites. Laboratory analysis determined granulocytic leukocytosis, monocytosis, decreased iron binding capacity, and increased CK and LDH enzyme activities. In the specific treatment of cases, equine-derived polyvalent antivenin containing antitoxic immunoglobulins against Viperidae species was administered. Additionally, 5% dextrose, antibiotics, dexamethasone, antihistamines, …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A 5-year-old Swedish Red cow, pregnant for 465 days according to the last insemination record, was presented in this case. She conceived by artificial insemination at spontaneous estrus using frozen-thawed sperm of Swedish Red sire. No abnormalities were detected during gestation and no clinical signs of parturition at the expected time of delivery were noted. She was reexamined several times to eliminate breeding records error and, once prolonged gestation was confirmed, parturition was induced. The calf survived birth but died 10 min after birth. A macroscopically giant fetus was diagnosed. Following necropsy, some congenital anomalies were noticed. While the structure …

Chemical Composition And In Vitro Rumen Fermentation Of Ensiled Sugar Industry Coproducts, Zohreh Zarnegar, Seyed Hadi Ebrahimi, Abbas Ali Naserian, Reza Valizadeh

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

he current study aims to compare sugar beet leaves (SBLs) ensiled with sugar beet pulp (SBP), sugarcane molasses (SM), or rock candy juice (RCJ) using an in vitro gas production technique. Treatments in the first group included 10% SBP (control 1) and control 1 plus 5% SM or RCJ. In the second group, there were 3 treatments, including 20% SBP (control 2) and control 2 plus 10% SM or RCJ. The silages with no added soluble carbohydrate (SC) sources had significantly higher (P < 0.001) pH, buffer value index, and ammonia nitrogen values than the other treatments. However, there was no significant difference between RCJ and SM in their effect on these variables. Adding both levels of SC sources caused an increase in dry matter digestibility compared to those that only included SBL and SBP (P < 0.001). Maximal and rate of gas production from slowly fermentable fraction (a$_{2}$) were significantly greater when the substrate contained 85%, 10%, and 5% SBL, SBP, and SC sources, respectively. Using dried SBP and SC sources for the preservation of fresh SBL is recommended; however, with higher levels of SC, the silage may be at risk of spoilage, and it must be less exposed to air.

The order of accumulation in these organs revealed to be liver > gills > muscles > skin. The fish fed various doses of mercury also showed histological alterations in these organs. Epithelial lifting and epithelial hypertrophy were seen in the gills of the …

Leptin Supplementation In Embryo Culture Medium Increases In Vivo Implantation Rates In Mice, Ali̇ Ci̇han Taşkin, Ahmet Kocabay

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Leptin is a hormone-like protein consisting of 167 amino acids. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of different leptin concentrations on in vitro and in vivo embryo development rates. In vitro development rates were investigated by embryo culture studies, and in vivo implantation rates and the quality of embryos were assessed by embryo transfers to the recipient mice. The results showed that addition of leptin into the embryo culture medium at 10 and 100 ng/mL doses supported the in vitro development of mouse embryo. Moreover, leptin increased the total cell number of blastocyst, particularly the trophectoderm …

First Evidence Of Holocrine Secretory Mechanism In Granular Ducts Inmouse Mandibular Gland, Bianca Matosz, Flavia Ruxanda, Cristian Ratiu, Vlad Luca, Vasile Rus, Viorel Miclaus Jan 2019

First Evidence Of Holocrine Secretory Mechanism In Granular Ducts Inmouse Mandibular Gland, Bianca Matosz, Flavia Ruxanda, Cristian Ratiu, Vlad Luca, Vasile Rus, Viorel Miclaus

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The mouse mandibular gland contains granular ducts, which possess a particular structure. They are termed granular ducts because they contain numerous granules in the cells lining them, having a secretory activity. We aimed to assess the secretory mechanism in granular ducts. Consequently, we harvested the mandibular glands from five male mice and processed them for histological investigations. A large number of cells appeared intact, without obvious distortions or disruptions in the cell membrane. Based on the morphological aspect, these cells either transferred the secretory product through exocytosis or were in "standby" mode. There were cells that presented prominent bulges of …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, findings of morphological deformation observed on a blue crab sampled in Köyceğiz Lagoon (Muğla, Turkey) are presented. The deformation is in the left lateral spine. It has been observed that this spine, which normally should have been one, developed as two independent spines. Due to this abnormality observed in the individual, the individual has two carapace widths.
