Reading Hospital Internal Medicine Residency
Quadricuspid aortic valve (QAV) is a rare congenital cardiac defect characterized by the presence of four aortic valve leaflets of equal or varying sizes. Even rarer is its clinical presentation with aortic stenosis. Diagnosis of QAV could be challenging but is of great importance as patients often present with progressive aortic regurgitation. We present 2 cases of QAV presenting differently: one with aortic stenosis requiring valve replacement and the other with aortic regurgitation requiring close monitoring.

Advance Directives In Primary Care, Andrew T. Vincent
Advance Directives In Primary Care, Andrew T. Vincent
Scholars Week
Advanced Directives are one of the most important documents in the health care system. An advanced directive is a “living will” that describes medical ambitions for the patient’s end-of-life care. The idea of end of life can be stressful for patients, families and health care professionals, and advance directives guide these participants into making end-of-life decisions organized. A dilemma occurring in health care includes patients arriving to emergency departments and critical care areas without an advance directives. A policy was introduced to initiate AD conversation prophylactic to extreme injury or impending death.

The Efficacy Of Mechanical Compression Devices In Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Emma A. French
Scholars Week
This project examines the ability of mechanical compression devices, such as the popular LUCAS device, to produce the desired outcomes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when compared to manual chest compression performed by a CPR certified individual. For the purpose of this project, desired outcomes include correct compression rate and depth according to American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines, return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) in the patient, long term survival of patients who achieve ROSC, and prevention of serious physical damage related to chest compressions. Data from multiple research studies comparing outcomes of mechanical compression devices and manual chest compression was reviewed …

Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is the major cause of bronchiolitis in young children. The factors that contribute to the increased propensity of RSV-induced distal airway disease compared with other commonly encountered respiratory viruses remain unclear. Here, we identified the RSV-encoded nonstructural 2 (NS2) protein as a viral genetic determinant for initiating RSV-induced distal airway obstruction. Infection of human cartilaginous airway epithelium (HAE) and a hamster model of disease with recombinant respiratory viruses revealed that NS2 promotes shedding of infected epithelial cells, resulting in two consequences of virus infection. First, epithelial cell shedding accelerated the reduction of virus titers, presumably …

The objective of this presentation is to study the in vivo actions of ribosome recycling factor (RRF) and compare them with those found in vitro. RRF is known to catalyze three separate reactions: release of tRNA and mRNA from the post-termination complex (PoTC), and splitting of the ribosome of the PoTC. To study the mechanism of RRF reaction in vivo, we used E. coli harboring temperature sensitive (ts) RRF and assayed by following downstream reading of translationally coupled ORF. At the non-permissive temperature, ribosomes remain on the termination codon of the junction sequence of coupled ORFs and translate downstream ORF …

A Horseshoe Kidney With A Unique Constellation Of Renal Vasculature - A Case Report, Guiyan Zhang, Richard Schmidt
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Posters
Horseshoe kidney with variable vascular supply is of interest to clinicians and anatomists due to its immense surgical significance. A horseshoe kidney encountered during cadaveric dissection is reported here. The left kidney is vertical and the right kidney is slightly horizontal. The isthmus is narrow and 1.5cm inferior to the inferior mesenteric artery. The hilum of the right kidney opens anteriorly and the left opens anteromedially. The ureters lie on the anterior surfaces of both kidneys. In addition to renal arteries arising from the aorta described in previous reports, a unique renal artery (Renal Artery 3) was found supplying the …

Osteoporosis Education: Success In A Community Setting, Cathy H. Abell, Maria E. Main, Maire M. Blankenship, S. Renea Watkins
International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
The purpose of the quasi-experimental study was to examine the effect of a community educational offering on attendees’ knowledge of osteoporosis as measured by the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test. A statistical significant difference was noted between the pretest and post-test means (p = .000). The findings demonstrate that a brief educational session can increase knowledge regarding osteoporosis. Development of partnerships with community populations to provide opportunities for health education can be valuable in promoting healthy behaviors.

Regulatory Disclosure Policies And Potential Induced Changes In Behavior: An Outcome Evaluation Of Santa Clara County’S Enhanced Food Safety Program Elements, Christian Cruz
Master's Projects
Despite countless advances in food microbiology and public health regulations, foodborne illness continues to be a major strain on public health outcomes and a costly economic burden. In the United States, many agencies are responsible for ensuring the quality of food, both domestically produced and imported. States and localities are delegated the responsibility of identifying and ensuring sound practices in the latter stages of the food production process, namely the retail distribution of food products to consumers.
Regulatory policies across the nation have only recently incorporated the evidenced-based principles of hazard risk management (Law, 2003). Still, food-related acute gastrointestinal illnesses …

Better Together: A Pilot Study On Cooking Matters For Adults With Developmental Disabilities And Direct Support Professionals, Wesley R Barnhart, Susan M Havercamp, Allison Lorenz, Emily A Yang
Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles
Adults with developmental disabilities face barriers to making healthy lifestyle choices that mirror the barriers faced by the direct support professionals who serve them. These two populations, direct support professionals and adults with developmental disabilities, are likely to lead inactive lifestyles, eat unhealthy diets, and be obese. Moreover, direct support professionals influence the nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and health behaviors of the adults with developmental disabilities whom they serve. We piloted a cooking-based nutrition education program, Cooking Matters for Adults, to dyads of adults with developmental disabilities (n = 8) and direct support professionals (n = 7). Team-taught by a …

Increasing Mental Health Literacy In The African American Community: Collaborations Between Mental Health Professionals And The Black Church, Brianna Simmons
Increasing Mental Health Literacy In The African American Community: Collaborations Between Mental Health Professionals And The Black Church, Brianna Simmons
Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference
African Americans tend to underutilize mental health services due to historical and present institutionalized racism, misdiagnoses, and misunderstandings, and to the lack of representation in the mental health field (Dempsey, Butler, and Gaither, 2016). African Americans thus turn to the Black Church for help. Clergy members of the Black Church use biblical counseling, which consists of seeking God’s wisdom (Dempsey et al., 2016). This differs from traditional psychological counseling where formalized diagnostic criteria are followed, and medication is often prescribed. Despite these differences between the Black Church and professional mental health agencies, there are a number of commonalities, such as …
