More Than Just A Trim In The Workforce: The Barriers Of Inconsistent Occupational Licensing In The United States, Ethan A. Schow
More Than Just A Trim In The Workforce: The Barriers Of Inconsistent Occupational Licensing In The United States, Ethan A. Schow
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
In the United States today, inconsistent occupational licensing requirements create barriers for professionals crossing state lines. In order to deal with this multistate problem without resorting to federal oversight, the states should consider forming an interstate compact to oversee and make recommendations for licensing requirement standardization and uniformity. This compact could oversee licensing for many professions. Multistate coordination has been successful before in other areas such as taxation of multistate businesses. Standardizing occupational licensing requirements would make initial licensure and subsequent relocation easier for professionals, and it would provide consumers with uniform quality of services and uniform protection of their …

Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic Modeling Of Nanoceria Systemic Distribution In Rats Suggests Dose- And Route-Dependent Biokinetics, Ulrika Carlander, Tshepo Paulsen Moto, Anteneh Assefa Desalegn, Robert A. Yokel, Gunnar Johanson
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: Cerium dioxide nanoparticles (nanoceria) are increasingly being used in a variety of products as catalysts, coatings, and polishing agents. Furthermore, their antioxidant properties make nanoceria potential candidates for biomedical applications. To predict and avoid toxicity, information about their biokinetics is essential. A useful tool to explore such associations between exposure and internal target dose is physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling. The aim of this study was to test the appropriateness of our previously published PBPK model developed for intravenous (IV) administration when applied to various sizes of nanoceria and to exposure routes relevant for humans.
Methods: Experimental biokinetic data …

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers
One major hurdle to the success of adoptive T-cell therapy is the identification of antigens that permit effective targeting of tumors in the absence of toxicities to essential organs. Previous work has demonstrated that T cells engineered to express chimeric antigen receptors (CAR-T cells) targeting the murine homolog of the colorectal cancer antigen GUCY2C treat established colorectal cancer metastases, without toxicity to the normal GUCY2C-expressing intestinal epithelium, reflecting structural compartmentalization of endogenous GUCY2C to apical membranes comprising the intestinal lumen. Here, we examined the utility of a human-specific, GUCY2C-directed single-chain variable fragment as the basis for a CAR construct targeting …

Determining The Role Of Point-Of-Care Hemoglobin Testing In The Resuscitation Of Acutely Hemorrhaging Patients, Eugene P. Warnick, Alexis R. Peedin, Md
Department of Pathology Honors Program Student Research Symposium
Point-of-care hemoglobin (Hb) testing has not been evaluated in the resuscitation of acutely hemorrhaging patients to guide transfusion therapy. This study assessed the correlation of Hb values determined by point-of-care (EPOC) and traditional laboratory (CBC) methods in patients undergoing massive transfusion. All patients transfused per the massive transfusion protocol (MTP) between February 2013 and October 2017 were identified. The EPOC result was most often within 1 g/dL of the CBC result when EPOC resulted in a Hb between 7-10 g/dL and when drawn within 15 minutes of the CBC specimen. In patients on MTP with an EPOC Hb between 7-10 …

Metastatic Lobular Breast Carcinoma In A Meningioma: A Case Study, Sara Chapin, Msii, Lawrence C. Kenyon, Md, Phd
Department of Pathology Honors Program Student Research Symposium
Hormonal relationships between breast carcinoma and meningioma have long been reported in the literature. This association may be related to the widespread expression of progesterone receptors in meningiomas. Indeed, meningiomas are more common in women and may demonstrate increased growth during pregnancy. Women have an increased risk of meningioma following breast carcinoma diagnosis and vice versa. However, much more uncommon is a tumor to tumor metastases of breast carcinoma into a meningioma. We report a case of a 56 year old female with a past medical history of breast cancer, found to have a right sphenoorbital meningioma with metastatic lobular …
Multivitamin Usage And Anemia In College Students, Jordan Balletto
Multivitamin Usage And Anemia In College Students, Jordan Balletto
Senior Honors Projects
Multivitamin usage has been shown to be significantly prevalent in the United States amongst adult populations. Recent data suggests that women are more likely than men to regularly consume a multivitamin, and that physically active individuals are more likely to take a multivitamin than those who live sedentary lifestyles. However, there are important, documented behavioral tendencies exhibited by college students that set them apart from the general adult population in terms of dietary intake. College students often partake in poor eating habits such as regularly skipping meals, eating out frequently, eating at fast food restaurants, and snacking on processed foods. …

Objective: To examine available literature on patient-provider communication directed specifically to pharmacists and create a succinct guide of communication techniques.
Methods: Two systematic searches were conducted on PubMed, EMBASE, APhA Library, Access Pharmacy, Communication Abstracts (EBSCO), and ComDisDome (Proquest). The first search quantified the literature available relating to communication techniques for non-pharmacist healthcare providers, such as physicians and nurses. The second search examined the information available on communication techniques directed to pharmacists and pharmacy practice. After conducting these general searches, the results were narrowed to clinical trials and review articles. Since the focus of this project was patient …
Leadership Development In The Nursing Student, Jessica Shaw
Leadership Development In The Nursing Student, Jessica Shaw
Senior Honors Projects
I am your typical type A honors nursing student. In several of my clinical courses, I received constructive criticism regarding my performance. The common theme throughout each rotation was leadership, or the lack thereof. I was itching to do something to break the trend. In our syllabi under expected course outcomes it said things like, “integrate principles of leadership,” and, “assume a leadership role.” To me, this was far too vague and there had never been a mention in the syllabi or the classroom of how leadership is defined or what it should look like in the nursing field. My …

Priorities: A Film Investigation Into The Quality Of Hiv Education In Ri Public High Schools, Ellis Iacono
Senior Honors Projects
HIV infection in Rhode Island is trending in a positive, downward direction as the state continues to emphasize testing and prevention. The Miriam Hospital’s HIV/AIDS Immunology Center is a well-established caregiving facility, providing medical and social support to more than 1,500 Rhode Islanders annually. Despite this progress, there are educational gaps between school districts and an apparent lack of emphasis on HIV education in some RI public high schools. I created a documentary film to better understand the state’s health education standards and how they are presented in curricula. In doing so, I conducted a series of short, on-camera interviews …

Ligation of OX40 (CD134, TNFRSF4) on activated T cells by its natural ligand (OX40L, CD252, TNFSF4) enhances cellular survival, proliferation, and effector functions such as cytokine release and cellular cytotoxicity. We engineered a recombinant human OX40L IgG4P Fc fusion protein termed MEDI6383 that assembles into a hexameric structure and exerts potent agonist activity following engagement of OX40. MEDI6383 displayed solution-phase agonist activity that was enhanced when the fusion protein was clustered by Fc gamma receptors (FcγRs) on the surface of adjacent cells. The resulting costimulation of OX40 on T cells induced NFκB promoter activity in OX40-expressing T cells and induced …

School Nurses' Knowledge And Perceived Role In Mental Health Issues, Kayla Bakker
School Nurses' Knowledge And Perceived Role In Mental Health Issues, Kayla Bakker
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Background:
There are 74.5 million children in the United States, 17.1 million currently or have previously dealt with a mental disorder (Children’s Mental Health, 2015). Unfortunately, the negative stigma associated with mental health often causes those affected to not seek treatment. School nurses are on the front line of public health problems and deliver safe, effective evidence-based practice to their communities. To rebuild our broken mental health system, community nurses need to build upon school mental health services and encourage more in-school programs (Stephan, Weist, Kataoka, Adelsheim, & Mills, 2007). School nurses must be included in the discussion when …

Improving Physical Fitness In Elementary School Students, Caroline Fortson
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
With childhood obesity rates rising across the country, promoting physical fitness is more important than ever. Today’s children are developing increasingly sedentary behavior. The average American elementary age child spends their day at school and the classroom is a source of the progressively sedentary behavior. Compounding the problem, schools are reducing the time allotted for physical education and recess, which means more time is spent sitting at a desk in the classroom. A rising number of children are reporting feelings of stress and anxiety, which may be alleviated by a physical activity such as yoga. Yoga may be an efficient …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
As the United States healthcare system continues to evolve and more Americans receive health insurance coverage, trends in diseases and care delivery to meet these trends are expected to shift. As this evolution takes place the ability to track trends to address the anticipated needs will need to develop at a faster pace. One such area is how healthcare providers engage the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community and how these interactions can improve care, perceived healthcare quality, and address health disparities. Currently most electronic health record (EHR) programs do not have the ability to track the sexual orientation or …

Assessing The Ordinality Of Response Bias With Item Response Models: A Case Study Using The Phq-9, Venessa N. Singhroy
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Improper scale usage in psychological and clinical assessment is an important problem. If respondents do not use the scales in a consistent manner, the reliability of a composite is likely to be attenuated. This is particularly problematic when particular items are singled out for special treatment or when subscales are of interest, not just a total score. This study used both non-parametric and parametric item response theory (IRT) methods to gain further insight into the validity of the PHQ-9, a dual purpose instrument that assesses the severity of depressive symptoms using nine Likert-scale items and allows the investigator to establish …
