The Affective Domain And The Intersection Of Learning In Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic Education, Meghan Williams May 2018

The Affective Domain And The Intersection Of Learning In Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic Education, Meghan Williams

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Bloom identified three separate domains for learning: the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. In this thesis, I propose that for paramedic education, the affective domain is not a domain to master equal to the psychomotor and cognitive domains, but must be mastered prior to the other domains in order to fully optimize learning. I propose that students must have a basic ability to apply the skills of the affective domain, and unlike the other domains, mastery of the almost the entire domain must be achieved before a student can complete the two other domains to be successful in a Paramedic …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This systematic review analyzed the research concerning the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) and speech-in-noise abilities in normal hearing adult listeners. In an attempt to understand the underlying difficulties in this population, the following research questions were proposed: 1) Does the research indicate that the magnitude of MOC suppression measured via OAEs is related to a normal hearing subject’s ability to recognize speech-in-noise? 2) Are MOC effects measured via OAEs lateralized? Is there a right ear advantage as suggested by Khalfa, Morlet, Micheyl, Morgon & Collet (1997)? Ten studies met the standards for inclusion for this review. Analysis of the research …

Catalyzed And Uncatalyzed Modifications Of Nucleosides, Synthesis Of Hippadine, And Deuterated 1,2,3-Triazoles, Hari K. Akula

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The C4 amide carbonyl of O-t-butyldimethylsilyl-protected thymidine, 2’-deoxyuridine, and 3’-azidothymidine (AZT) was activated by reaction with (benzotriazol-1-yloxy)tris(dimethylamino) phosphonium hexafluorophosphate (BOP) and 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) in THF as solvent. This led to the formation of corresponding O4-(benzotriazol-1-yl) derivatives, which are reactive intermediates. Substitution at the C4 position was then carried out by reactions with alkyl and aryl amines, and thiols. Typically, reactions were conducted as a two-step, one-pot transformation, and also as a one-step conversion. After examining the reactions, the formation of 1-(4-pyrimidinyl)-1H-benzotriazole-3-oxide derivatives from the pyrimidine nucleosides was identified. However, these too underwent conversion to …

Individual Differences In Stimulus Frequency Otoacoustic Emission Phase, Joshua J. Hajicek May 2018

Individual Differences In Stimulus Frequency Otoacoustic Emission Phase, Joshua J. Hajicek

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are sounds that originate in the cochlea and are measured in the ear canal. OAEs provide a noninvasive tool for investigating cochlear mechanics. Stimulus-frequency OAEs (SFOAEs) are evoked by presenting a single frequency tone, called a probe tone, which have an advantage over other OAEs because they are the least influenced by cochlear nonlinearities. However, because the SFOAE are generated in the cochlea with the same frequency as the stimulus, additional techniques, such as the use of suppressor tones are needed to enable separation of the probe tone from the SFOAE.

The primary goal of this investigation …

Opportunities For Epidemiologists In Implementation Science: A Primer, Gila Neta, Ross C Brownson, David A Chambers May 2018

Opportunities For Epidemiologists In Implementation Science: A Primer, Gila Neta, Ross C Brownson, David A Chambers

2010-2019 OA Pubs

The field of epidemiology has been defined as the study of the spread and control of disease. However, epidemiology frequently focuses on studies of etiology and distribution of disease at the cost of understanding the best ways to control disease. Moreover, only a small fraction of scientific discoveries are translated into public health practice, and the process from discovery to translation is exceedingly slow. Given the importance of translational science, the future of epidemiologic training should include competency in implementation science, whose goal is to rapidly move evidence into practice. Our purpose in this paper is to provide epidemiologists with …

Peripheral artery disease is one of the most prevalent cardiovascular diseases in the United States and worldwide. It is estimated that over 8 million people in the United States are affected with peripheral artery disease, and up to 40% of people over 80 years old may have some degree of the disease. Peripheral artery disease can increase one’s chances for having other cardiovascular co-morbidities such as coronary artery disease, among others. Current interventional strategies are endovascular treatments such as transluminal angioplasty and stenting, or in more advanced cases peripheral artery bypass grafting. Medical interventions focus on managing symptoms and treating …

The Psychosocial Effects Of Compensated Turnout On Dancers: A Critical Look At The Leading Cause Of Non-Traumatic Dance Injuries, Rachel Smith May 2018

The Psychosocial Effects Of Compensated Turnout On Dancers: A Critical Look At The Leading Cause Of Non-Traumatic Dance Injuries, Rachel Smith

Honors Theses

Dancers suffer from extremely high injury rates compared to the general population (Noh, Morris, & Anderson, 2003). Most of the injuries are overuse injuries (60-75%), as opposed to traumatic injuries (Thomas & Tarr, 2009). One of the most common overuse injuries is compensated, or forced, turnout (Negus, Hopper, & Briffa, 2005). Continual misplacement of turnout wears and tears on the body, leading to pain and injury. However, dancers feel the risk is worth it to stay relevant in a physically demanding career that has little-to-no off-season to heal (McEwen & Young, 2011). Dance companies typically have the mindset of pushing …

Department of Medicine

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia affecting three million people in the United States (US). Across different races in the US, the incidence of other races was comparable to that of Caucasian population. This points towards the importance of certain lifestyle modifications that can help prevent and treat this disorder. This article discusses 10 such factors. Smoking has been linked to AF, with almost 36% risk reduction if quit. Hypertension has 56% increased risk of atrial fibrillation in which the role of lifestyle changes is well known. Similarly, alcohol-induced atrial fibrillation has 10% increased risk of atrial fibrillation. …

The Comparison Of Effective Education Methods To Increase Knowledge About Alzheimer's Disease., Lillian M. Kopsolias

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a disease most people recognize, but have many misconceptions about. One way to decrease the amount of misconceptions about AD is to educate the general public on the disease. Many educational methods, such as person-centered care education, have been researched, but none have focused on the general public. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare two educational methods used today, reading a passage from a reliable online source (traditional educational method) and watching documentaries (person-centered care educational method), to find if a specific way of presenting them will prove efficient for Alzheimer’s education. The …

Enhancement Of Nafld Risk By Vinyl Chloride : Role Of Adipose Tissue In A Mouse Model., Brenna R. Kaelin May 2018

Enhancement Of Nafld Risk By Vinyl Chloride : Role Of Adipose Tissue In A Mouse Model., Brenna R. Kaelin

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Background: Vinyl chloride (VC), an environmental contaminant, is directly hepatotoxic at high concentrations. However, our group has recently demonstrated that VC and the VC metabolite chloroethanol (CE), at concentrations that are not considered hepatotoxic, enhanced liver injury caused by high-fat diet (HFD). These data therefore suggest that the impact of VC exposure on hepatic tissue may be enhanced with underlying metabolic syndrome and/or liver injury. It is known that there is an axis between adipose and hepatic tissue in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), with the former impacting pathology in the hepatic tissue via release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and/or lipolysis. …

Pornography As A Public Health Issue: Promoting Violence And Exploitation Of Children, Youth, And Adults, Elisabeth Taylor

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The pornography industry is expanding exponentially as a result of ongoing technological advances. The ability to stream videos over the internet and the ubiquity of the smart phone have meant that pornography producers are able to use algorithms to target potential consumers, to cultivate new sexual tastes and to deliver content to a more diverse audience over mobile devices. The advent of virtual reality pornography with interactive sex toys and sex robots imbued with artificial intelligence promises to unleash a further step-change in the extent to which pornography influences ‘real-world’ sexual culture. The critical analysis of pornography undertaken over decades …

Most Effective Interventions For Disaster Relief Preparation, Elizabeth Keating, Faith Edwards, Cheryl Swanson Phd, Rn May 2018

Most Effective Interventions For Disaster Relief Preparation, Elizabeth Keating, Faith Edwards, Cheryl Swanson Phd, Rn

Anna Vaughn School of Nursing Undergraduate Work

Because disasters are sometimes unpredictable and difficult to measure, it is exceedingly important to have properly trained healthcare professionals that are prepared for a variety of natural and manmade crises. Victims affected by disasters may be numerous and have severe injuries, but nurses, as first-responders, with proper education and experience can drastically reduce the amount of casualties in a particular disaster. However, it is clear that nurses currently feel unprepared in the event of a natural or manmade disaster, and therefore need more training and preparation for such occurrences. This systematic research review set out to find the most effective …
