Quantification Of Tumor-Associated Macrophages Following Immunomodulation Therapy In A Murine Allograft Model Of Colorectal Carcinoma, Caroline Spainhour

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Colorectal Carcinoma (CRC) is one of the deadliest cancers in the world, with 150,000 new cases annually in the United States. Traditional treatments include chemotherapy and invasive surgery; however, research has shown that only 25% of patients that undergo traditional treatment have a positive result. Immunotherapy is an emerging form of cancer treatment that utilizes the patients’immune system to fight cancer cells by targeting inflammation, which plays a large role in the proliferation and metastasis of cancer cells.

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are immune cells that affect the inflammatory microenvironment of tumors. TAMs are M1 in the early stages of tumors, …

Earlier Identification Of Medications Needing Prior Authorization Can Reduce Delays In Hospital Discharge, Thomas Lew, Laressa Bethishou, Lisa Shieh

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

"Based on our experience, there are no studies that evaluate delays due to discharge medications needing to undergo the PA process. Thus, in our pilot study, we both aim to define the scope of this problem by surveying resident physicians as well as provide an intervention to identify earlier medications that will need to undergo a PA process. Pharmacy-led interventions in processing PAs have resulted in a statistically significant benefit in improving time to PA approval, fill, and pickup.5 Therefore, in our intervention, we utilize a specialized 'transitions of care' (TOC) pharmacist to analyze the medications of patients who are …

Role Of Local Renin-Angiotensin System In Altering Valve Interstitial Cell Phenotype, Sophia Scalise

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Hypertension is a disorder prevalent in adults around the world and is a common attributable cause of heart disease and mortality [1]. Calcification is much more common in the aortic valve than the other three heart valves [2]. Aortic valve interstitial cells (VICs), the principal cell type found in the human aortic valve, have been linked to disease development when they change in phenotype to become osteoblast like cells [3]. The phenotypes of these cells play a role in the development of calcification in the aortic valves [4].

Angiotensin II is a hormone in the body that has been implicated …

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Laboratory processing pathways have a significant impact on the overall management of patients with sepsis. Retrieval and isolation of the suspected pathogen from a patient blood culture specimen is required for a definitive diagnosis of bacterial septicemia. Reference laboratories are high-volume facilities most often located some distance away from the collecting facility. Given the lengthy work up already required for blood culture pathogen analysis, reference laboratories must identify ways to optimize every step of the blood culture pathway in the effort to decrease turnaround time and mitigate lag time to final pathogen identification incurred by prolonged collection-to-incubation times. Rapid molecular …

A Change Of Heart: Internal Narratives, Forgiveness & Health, Keiko Ehret

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

In this thesis I investigate the interconnectedness of forgiveness as a narrative, as a philosophical, religious and cultural phenomenon, and the ways in which forgiveness is increasingly being used as a vehicle for improving health and psychological well-being. By threading together how scholars in a variety of fields have approached these areas of study, we can better understand the way the interdisciplinary nature of forgiveness grants access to heal not merely relationships with others, but also our bodies, our minds, and our relationship with ourselves.

Important to my investigation is understanding that the life circumstances that prompt forgiveness consist of …

Identification Of Substrate-Selective Histone Deacetylases And Their Inhibitors That Mediate Her2 Transcript Stability, Mariah Alejo May 2018

Identification Of Substrate-Selective Histone Deacetylases And Their Inhibitors That Mediate Her2 Transcript Stability, Mariah Alejo

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy diagnosed in women. 15-20% of these cancers overexpress the HER2 (ERRB2) oncoprotein. HER2-positive breast cancers are generally aggressive and are associated with poor prognosis. Unfortunately, only a mere 30% of HER2-positve patients respond to therapies when they are used as a single agent. Combining therapeutics can potentially lead to synergy and improved anticancer efficacy, and there is clearly a need for the development of new HER2-directed therapeutics. Newer approaches include the utilization of histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors. It has been observed that HDAC inhibitors can induce the rapid decay of oncogenic transcripts such …

Amylin And Diabetic Cardiomyopathy – Amylin-Induced Sarcolemmal Ca2+ Leak Is Independent Of Diabetic Remodeling Of Myocardium, Miao Liu, Amanda Hoskins, Nirmal Verma, Donald M. Bers, Sanda Despa, Florin Despa

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Amylin is a pancreatic β-cell hormone co-secreted with insulin, plays a role in normal glucose homeostasis, and forms amyloid in the pancreatic islets of individuals with type-2 diabetes. Aggregated amylin is also found in blood and extra-pancreatic tissues, including myocardium. Myocardial amylin accumulation is associated with myocyte Ca2+ dysregulation in diabetic rats expressing human amylin. Whether deposition of amylin in the heart is a consequence of or a contributor to diabetic cardiomyopathy remains unknown. We used amylin knockout (AKO) mice intravenously infused with either human amylin (i.e, the aggregated form) or non-amyloidogenic (i.e., monomeric) rodent amylin to test the …

Digitizing Omics Profiles By Divergence From A Baseline., Wikum Dinalankara, Qian Ke, Yiran Xu, Lanlan Ji, Nicole Pagane, Anching Lien, Tejasvi Matam, Elana J Fertig, Nathan D Price, Laurent Younes, Luigi Marchionni, Donald Geman

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Data collected from omics technologies have revealed pervasive heterogeneity and stochasticity of molecular states within and between phenotypes. A prominent example of such heterogeneity occurs between genome-wide mRNA, microRNA, and methylation profiles from one individual tumor to another, even within a cancer subtype. However, current methods in bioinformatics, such as detecting differentially expressed genes or CpG sites, are population-based and therefore do not effectively model intersample diversity. Here we introduce a unified theory to quantify sample-level heterogeneity that is applicable to a single omics profile. Specifically, we simplify an omics profile to a digital representation based on the omics profiles …

Synaptic Nanomodules Underlie The Organization And Plasticity Of Spine Synapses., Martin Hruska, Nathan T. Henderson, Sylvain J. Le Marchand, Haani Jafri, Matthew B. Dalva May 2018

Synaptic Nanomodules Underlie The Organization And Plasticity Of Spine Synapses., Martin Hruska, Nathan T. Henderson, Sylvain J. Le Marchand, Haani Jafri, Matthew B. Dalva

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Experience results in long-lasting changes in dendritic spine size, yet how the molecular architecture of the synapse responds to plasticity remains poorly understood. Here a combined approach of multicolor stimulated emission depletion microscopy (STED) and confocal imaging in rat and mouse demonstrates that structural plasticity is linked to the addition of unitary synaptic nanomodules to spines. Spine synapses in vivo and in vitro contain discrete and aligned subdiffraction modules of pre- and postsynaptic proteins whose number scales linearly with spine size. Live-cell time-lapse super-resolution imaging reveals that NMDA receptor-dependent increases in spine size are accompanied both by enhanced mobility of …

Nurses' Breastfeeding Knowledge And Confidence After Education Session, Anna Caroline Tillman

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Background: Education is an essential part of the nursing profession. Nurses should be teaching their patients every day, ensuring they understand the most reliable evidence-based practices. In breastfeeding education, however, there is a lack of education to expectant mothers on common breastfeeding methods, how to overcome common barriers, and general breastfeeding knowledge. If nurses can be effectively educated in breastfeeding knowledge and build their confidence in teaching their patients, then mothers will receive more thorough and helpful breastfeeding education. The hope in educating both nurses and mothers is to increase breastfeeding exclusivity rates to meet Healthy People2020 goals.

Objective: The …
