The Presence Of Stem Cells In Human Breast Milk And Research Implications, Melody (Brooke) Peterson Apr 2016

The Presence Of Stem Cells In Human Breast Milk And Research Implications, Melody (Brooke) Peterson

Senior Honors Theses

Stem cell therapy research is an expanding area of study as stem cell therapy is believed to have the potential to provide treatment options for numerous disease processes. Currently, embryonic stem cell research is the method of choice to evaluate the potential for stem cell therapy. The use of human embryos for stem cell research raises moral and ethical controversies. Stem cells are found in a variety of mediums, but until the recent discovery of stem cells in human breast milk, the most versatile stem cells have been those found in the human embryo. Human breast milk stem cells could …

The Utilization Of Exogenous Surfactant In The Neonate, Katherine Thorkildsen Apr 2016

The Utilization Of Exogenous Surfactant In The Neonate, Katherine Thorkildsen

Senior Honors Theses

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a common consequence of pulmonary immaturity in the lungs of neonates. RDS is the result of the deficient secretion of endogenous surfactant, causing increased surface tension in the alveolar sacs leading to respiratory compromise. RDS is more common in the preterm neonate but can be experienced by neonates at any gestational age. Treatment for RDS formerly consisted of mechanical ventilation and oxygen therapy to treat and relieve symptoms but not the cause. A new treatment method, developed largely in the 1980s and 90s is the use of exogenous surfactant to treat the deficiency exhibited in …

Heart and Vascular Articles

BACKGROUND: This randomized controlled trial evaluated clinical durability of Zilver PTX, a paclitaxel-coated drug-eluting stent (DES), for femoropopliteal artery lesions. Outcomes compare primary DES versus percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), overall DES (primary and provisional) versus standard care (PTA and provisional Zilver bare metal stent [BMS]), and provisional DES versus provisional BMS.

METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients with symptomatic femoropopliteal artery disease were randomly assigned to DES (n=236) or PTA (n=238). Approximately 91% had claudication; 9% had critical limb ischemia. Patients experiencing acute PTA failure underwent secondary randomization to provisional BMS (n=59) or DES (n=61). The 1-year primary end points of event-free …

The Role Of Continuous Low-Frequency Harmonicity Cues For Interrupted Speech Perception In Bimodal Hearing, Soo Hee Oh, Gail S. Donaldson Apr 2016

The Role Of Continuous Low-Frequency Harmonicity Cues For Interrupted Speech Perception In Bimodal Hearing, Soo Hee Oh, Gail S. Donaldson

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Publications

Low-frequency acoustic cues have been shown to enhance speech perception by cochlear-implant users, particularly when target speech occurs in a competing background. The present study examined the extent to which a continuous representation of low-frequency harmonicity cues contributes to bimodal benefit in simulated bimodal listeners. Experiment 1 examined the benefit of restoring a continuous temporal envelope to the low-frequency ear while the vocoder ear received a temporally interrupted stimulus. Experiment 2 examined the effect of providing continuous harmonicity cues in the low-frequency ear as compared to restoring a continuous temporal envelope in the vocoder ear. Findings indicate that bimodal benefit …

Endothelial To Mesenchymal Transition (Endomt) In The Pathogenesis Of Human Fibrotic Diseases., Sonsoles Piera-Velazquez, Fabian A. Mendoza, Sergio A. Jimenez Apr 2016

Endothelial To Mesenchymal Transition (Endomt) In The Pathogenesis Of Human Fibrotic Diseases., Sonsoles Piera-Velazquez, Fabian A. Mendoza, Sergio A. Jimenez

Jefferson Institute of Molecular Medicine Papers and Presentations

Fibrotic diseases encompass a wide spectrum of clinical entities including systemic fibrotic diseases such as systemic sclerosis, sclerodermatous graft versus host disease, nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, and IgG₄-associated sclerosing disease, as well as numerous organ-specific disorders including radiation-induced fibrosis, and cardiac, pulmonary, liver, and kidney fibrosis. Although their causative mechanisms are quite diverse, these diseases share the common feature of an uncontrolled and progressive accumulation of fibrous tissue macromolecules in affected organs leading to their dysfunction and ultimate failure. The pathogenesis of fibrotic diseases is complex and despite extensive investigation has remained elusive. Numerous studies have identified myofibroblasts as the cells …

The Role Of Mathematical Modeling In Designing And Evaluating Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs, Lester Caudill, Joanna R. Wares Apr 2016

The Role Of Mathematical Modeling In Designing And Evaluating Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs, Lester Caudill, Joanna R. Wares

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Antimicrobial agent effectiveness continues to be threatened by the rise and spread of pathogen strains that exhibit drug resistance. This challenge is most acute in healthcare facilities where the well-established connection between resistance and sub-optimal antimicrobial use has prompted the creation of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs). Mathematical models offer tremendous potential for serving as an alternative to controlled human experimentation for assessing the effectiveness of ASPs. Models can simulate controlled randomized experiments between groups of virtual patients, some treated with the ASP measure under investigation, and some without. By removing the limitations inherent in human experimentation, including health risks, study …

Myers, Phd, Dsw, Zhong Ye, Bingshan Li, Jinliang Xing, Hushan Yang

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Recent studies have demonstrated a potential link between circulating cell-free mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content and cancers. However, there is no study evaluating the association between circulating mtDNA as a non-invasive marker of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk. We conducted a nested case-control study to determine circulating mtDNA content in serum samples from 116 HBV-related HCC cases and 232 frequency-matched cancer-free HBV controls, and evaluate the retrospective association between mtDNA content and HCC risk using logistic regression and their temporal relationship using a mixed effects model. HCC cases had significantly lower circulating mtDNA content than controls (1.06 versus 2.47, P = 1.7 …

Educational Program To Improve Care For The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender (Lgbt) Patient, Timothy A. Brendle

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

focus of this capstone project is to explore the impact of registered nurses’ bias and lack of knowledge associated with the care of the LGBT patient. A Quasiexperimental design was used to evaluate the cause-and-effect relationship of an educational intervention. This intervention provided LGBT cultural knowledge and provides evidence regarding how homophobia and transphobia among nurses creates and perpetuates disparities among LGBT people. Attitude and knowledge assessment tools were used to collect responses from participant’s pre and post intervention. Using parametric and descriptive statistics, the participants’ data were analyzed. There were no statistically significant differences between the pre and post …

Uncertainty And Sensitivity Analysis Of A Rift Valley Fever Model, S. A. Pedro, H. E.Z. Tonnang, S. Abelman

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a vector-borne viral disease with pronounced health and economic impacts on domestic animals and humans in much of sub-Saharan Africa. Using techniques of uncertainty and sensitivity analysis (both local derivatives and sampling-based methods) of a mathematical model for RVF transmission in livestock by two population of mosquitoes (Aedes and Culex). We systematically investigate the relative importance of each model parameter for both disease epidemic and endemic activities. The relationship between vertical transmission and basic reproduction number reveals that during epidemic activities vertical transmission accelerates the course of the outbreak as it increases the size of …

Improving Outcomes By Optimizing Sleep Opportunities In The Critically Ill Neuroscience Patient, Marie Wilson, Bsn, Rn, Ccrn, Cnrn Apr 2016

Improving Outcomes By Optimizing Sleep Opportunities In The Critically Ill Neuroscience Patient, Marie Wilson, Bsn, Rn, Ccrn, Cnrn

Department of Nursing papers and presentations

Purpose

The purpose of the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit is to provide specialized quality care to a high acuity and vulnerable critically ill population with the desired outcome of health improvement. It would appear that the goal for both Neuroscience Intensive Care Units and “sleep” would be one of healing; however it is also well documented that routine sleep disturbances due to either deprivation or disruption in neuroscience critical care units negatively affects patient outcomes.

Further exploration of sleep architecture, physiologic responses that occur during sleep and factors contributing to a lack of qualitative and quantitative sleep in critical care …

Previous studies have shown positive effects of long-term resveratrol (RSV) supplementation in preventing pancreatic beta cell dysfunction, arterial stiffening and metabolic decline induced by high-fat/high-sugar (HFS) diet in nonhuman primates. Here, the analysis was extended to examine whether RSV may reduce dietary stress toxicity in the cerebral cortex of the same cohort of treated animals. Middle-aged male rhesus monkeys were fed for 2 years with HFS alone or combined with RSV, after which whole-genome microarray analysis of cerebral cortex tissue was carried out along with ELISA, immunofluorescence, and biochemical analyses to examine markers of vascular health and inflammation in the …
