Family And Peer Groups’ Impact On Adolescent Marijuana Use, Brian Lunn Apr 2016

Family And Peer Groups’ Impact On Adolescent Marijuana Use, Brian Lunn

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

Differential association theory explains that once definitions favoring deviant behavior become in excess of definitions favoring conforming, one is at an increased risk of acting deviant. This study uses survey data collected from high school students in Delaware to test hypotheses derived from differential association theory on student marijuana use.Consistent with theoretical expectations, the logistic regression results show that both parents’ and friends’ attitudes toward drug use as wrong and having a good relationship with one’s parents significantly reduce the likelihood of marijuana use, while living in an unstable home environment significantly increases the odds of marijuana use. Interestingly, results …

Background Tumor hypoxia is associated with treatment resistance to cancer therapies. Hypoxia can be investigated by immunohistopathologic methods but such procedure is invasive. A non-invasive method to interrogate tumor hypoxia is an attractive option as such method can provide information before, during, and after treatment for personalized therapies. Our study evaluated the correlations between computed tomography (CT) perfusion parameters and immunohistopathologic measurement of tumor hypoxia. Methods Wistar rats, 18 controls and 19 treated with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), implanted with the C6 glioma tumor were imaged using CT perfusion on average every five days to monitor tumor growth. A final CT …

Autotaxin (ATX) generates the lipid mediator lysophosphatidic acid (LPA). ATX-LPA signalling is involved in multiple biological and pathophysiological processes, including vasculogenesis, fibrosis, cholestatic pruritus and tumour progression. ATX has a tripartite active site, combining a hydrophilic groove, a hydrophobic lipid-binding pocket and a tunnel of unclear function. We present crystal structures of rat ATX bound to 7α-hydroxycholesterol and the bile salt tauroursodeoxycholate (TUDCA), showing how the tunnel selectively binds steroids. A structure of ATX simultaneously harbouring TUDCA in the tunnel and LPA in the pocket, together with kinetic analysis, reveals that bile salts act as partial non-competitive inhibitors …

Recurring Ankle Injuries In Dancers, Alexis Jawny

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research, obtained from various Journals of Dance Medicine and Science, is to identify the cause of recurring ankle injuries in the dance community. Ankle injuries are the most common type of injury making up 50% of injuries in dancers. The main cause of recurring ankle injuries is improper diagnosing and then leading to the wrong treatment plan. The research focusses on how to prevent these improper diagnoses and what the dancer and specialty care professional (orthopedics, physical therapists, and rehabilitative medicine) can do to decrease the number of ankle injuries occurring and reoccurring in the dance …

The Psychological And Physical Rehabilitation Of Amputees, Victoria Ramos Apr 2016

The Psychological And Physical Rehabilitation Of Amputees, Victoria Ramos

Senior Honors Theses

Since physical therapy requires constant interaction with other people, it is a career that requires not only medical knowledge, but knowledge of the human psychology as well. A physical therapist may be well versed in recovery techniques, but how will he or she get the patient motivated if the patient is not motivated to begin with? Every person is different. Rehabilitation of amputees is a delicate process that requires significant work over an extended time period. Many factors are involved during the preoperative phase, as well as the postoperative phase. However, by being aware of the patient’s mental status and …

The Effect Of Reduced Carbohydrate Diet Education On Hemoglobin A1c In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Lauren Parker Apr 2016

The Effect Of Reduced Carbohydrate Diet Education On Hemoglobin A1c In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Lauren Parker

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is characteristically the result of modifiable risk factors, impacting the health and well being of all ethnic backgrounds across the lifespan. Research has indicated that despite the many risk factors associated with T2D, alterations in dietary macronutrient composition can lead to improvements in disease management and resultant complications. Therefore, the purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to provide individuals with reduced carbohydrate (carb) diet education to promote greater glycemic control and reduce associated risk factors through macronutrient modification, specifically carb intake. An integration of the most current evidence obtained from the critically appraised literature …

biomechanical patterns and insufficiencies that may influence risk of ligamentous injury, such as an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. One kinematic pattern that has been identified as detrimental to ACL integrity is frontal plane knee collapse (valgus) during jumping and landing tasks.1 Inter-limb differences in force generation have also been connected to the occurrence of lower extremity injury.2 It is not known, however, whether these patterns contribute to the occurrence of lower extremity (LE) non-contact soft-tissue injury. The counter-movement vertical jump (CMVJ) is one way to simultaneously screen for knee collapse and asymmetrical force production patterns. This method was therefore …

UCARE: Research Products

Background: The optimal resistance training program to elicit muscle hypertrophy has been consistently debated and researched. Although 3 sets of 10 repetitions at 70-80% of the 1-repetition maximum (1RM) is widely recommended, recent studies have shown that low-load (~30% 1RM), high-repetition (3 sets of 30-40 repetitions) resistance training can elicit similar muscular hypertrophy. Therefore, this type of resistance training has gained popularity, perhaps because less weight is lifted for a longer duration. In the process of testing this hypothesis in a research study in our laboratory, a subject diagnosed with exertional rhabdomyolysis after completing a single resistance training session …

Development Of A Temperature Sensitive Face Mask For Identification And Triage Of Febrile Patients, Annemarie Daecher, Flemming Forsberg, John R. Eisenbrey

Department of Radiology Posters

Abstract:

Many infectious diseases are most transmittable when the carrier is presenting with fever. We propose a disposable face mask that changes color as an indicator of fever to provide hospitals with a quick and inexpensive method for triaging infected patients while limiting exposure to others. Two blue thermochromatic dyes which transition to white at 89°F and 92°F were mixed with white paint and applied to 5 types of disposable face masks. During trials, a wearer either sat at rest or ran on a treadmill for 20 minutes and images were obtained every 5 minutes with a thermal camera to …

Abstract:

Exosomes are nanoscale membrane-derived vesicles that are secreted by cancer cells and play a critical role in modulating the tumor microenvironment and disease pathogenesis. Dsg2, a desmosomal cadherin often overexpressed in skin malignancies including squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), can activate EGFR/c-Src signaling and promote oncogenesis. We sought to address the potential role of Dsg2 in exosome biogenesis and intercellular signaling in SCC. Here, purified exosomes from SCC cells and head/neck SCC patient sera were enriched with a processed 65 kDa membrane-associated C-terminal fragment of Dsg2. Cells overexpressing Dsg2 had increased exosome release and protein content and produced particles enriched …

Is The United States Prepared For A Major Zika Virus Outbreak?, Lawrence O. Gostin, James G. Hodge Jr.

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Zika virus has emerged as a global public health crisis with active transmission in the Americas and Caribbean. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), and recently WHO reported there is a scientific consensus that Zika is a cause of microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). In the U.S. the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) activated its emergency operations center at its highest capacity. President Obama requested $1.86 billion in emergency funding. Shamefully, Congress has yet to appropriate the funding needed for Zika preparedness, and the President has had to reallocate Ebola …

Effect Of Breathing Apparatus On The Patterns Of Response For Physiological Variables During An Incremental Test To Exhaustion, Rachel Lechtenberger, Kristen C. Cochrane, Terry J. Housh

UCARE: Research Products

During running exercise, trained runners will utilize both nasal and oral breathing mechanisms. However, during most clinical running tests, the breathing apparatus blocks the nasal pathway, therefore only allowing oral breathing. It has been suggested that a breathing apparatus that allows both nasal and oral breathing may provide an environment that is more similar to running outside of a lab setting. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the patterns of responses for physiological variables during an incremental treadmill running exercise test to exhaustion utilizing both a traditional mouth piece (MP) and breathing mask (MSK) apparatus. METHODS: …

Spontaneous fluctuations of resting state functional MRI (rsfMRI) have been widely used to understand the macro-connectome of the human brain. However, these fluctuations are not synchronized among subjects, which leads to limitations and makes utilization of first-level model-based methods challenging. Considering this limitation of rsfMRI data in the time domain, we propose to transfer the spatiotemporal information of the rsfMRI data to another domain, the connectivity domain, in which each value represents the same effect across subjects. Using a set of seed networks and a connectivity index to calculate the functional connectivity for each seed network, we transform data into …

The Unmet Need For Care: Vulnerability Among Older Adults, Rebecca K. Glauber, Melissa Day

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Rebecca Glauber and Melissa Day explore factors that exacerbate the unmet need for care among the noninstitutionalized older population and seek to determine who is likely to need care but go without. They find that unmarried individuals and those who live alone are more likely than others to need care but not receive it. These older adults are frail, have difficulty meeting their daily needs, and do not have family members or friends to whom to turn in times of need. This group of vulnerable older adults requires an array of social supports.
