Reducing Annual Emergency Department Visits Through Improved Asthma Discharge Teaching, Alvin R. Walters
Reducing Annual Emergency Department Visits Through Improved Asthma Discharge Teaching, Alvin R. Walters
Master's Projects and Capstones
Asthma is the most common pediatric condition in the United States, and a child's home environment plays an impactful role in the triggering of asthma exacerbations (Harper et al., 2015). Current emergency department (ED) ideology focuses on symptoms management, with little time spent on education, and virtually no attention paid to the home environment. Evidence shows that programs which incorporate home environmental assessments into asthma patient education produce a reduction in annual ED visits, fewer missed school days, decreased use of rescue medications, and improvements in quality of life (Gruber K.J., et al, 2016, Hollenbach J.P. & Cloutier M.M., 2015, …

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Background:
Duration of digestion/decontamination has a considerable impact on yield of mycobacteria especially from sterile body fluids and pus specimens. Additionally, duration of digestion/decontamination affects the contamination rates. This study evaluates the effect of digestion/decontamination protocol for 15 and 20min versus inoculation of media directly from the sample on contamination rates as well as the yield of mycobacteria from pus and sterile fluids other than cerebrospinal fluids.
Methods:
Pleural fluid (n=60), pus (n=48) and ascitic fluid (n=12) specimens were cultured for mycobacteria and evaluated for contamination and mycobacterial yield using three different processing methodologies: without digestion/decontamination with 5% NaOH-NALC (D/D), …

The course focuses on the concepts and methods of health services and public health research. It is structured around the primary stages of research proposal development. It is designed for DrPH students in the College of Public Health and other graduate or professional students who have successfully completed the appropriate prerequisites. By the completion of this course, Students will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to write a research proposal, plan for the dissertation, and develop and carry-out research projects.

Association Of Plasma Cytokines With Radiological Recovery In Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients, Najeeha Talat Iqbal, Rabia Hussain, Firdaus Shahid, Ghaffar Dawood
Association Of Plasma Cytokines With Radiological Recovery In Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients, Najeeha Talat Iqbal, Rabia Hussain, Firdaus Shahid, Ghaffar Dawood
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
Background: The characterization of tuberculosis (TB) patients as slow or fast responders post anti-TB treatment has always been a matter of tremendous interest as slow responders are most likely to relapse and/or develop complications. Pulmonary tissue healing as assessed with radiology is the only available tool for tissue recovery but is not predictive at intake. The objective of the current study was to assess biomarkers associated with fast and slow recovery in TB patients at recruitment. Methods: Pulmonary TB patients (N=15) were assessed for radiological recovery serially in parallel with clinical signs and symptoms, hematological parameters, and plasma cytokines at 0months, …

Cholesterol is carried and transported through bloodstream by lipoproteins. There are two types of lipoproteins: low density lipoprotein, or LDL, and high density lipoprotein, or HDL. LDL cholesterol is considered “bad” cholesterol because it can form plaque and hard deposit leading to arteries clog and make them less flexible. Heart attack or stroke will happen if the hard deposit blocks a narrowed artery. HDL cholesterol helps to remove LDL from the artery back to the liver.
Traditionally, particle counts of LDL and HDL plays an important role to understanding and prediction of heart disease risk. But recently research suggested that …

Are Healthcare Providers Prepared To Provide Care For The Lgbt Community?, Sam Dao
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Current research generally questions that the healthcare system does not provide as adequate services for the LGBT community as there are for heterosexuals. Baumle’s research show that health care benefits were not equal for LGBT and provided health insurance percentages were lower for gays and lesbians than for heterosexuals (2014). Understanding and improving the factors that influence the health of LGBT people is limited due the the lack of population-based data (The Pride Study 2015). In order to begin improving the health and health care of the LGBT community, awareness and practice of providing appropriate care for this certain population …

SOHNS supplementary Data and Tools
Condom self-efficacy is an important construct for HIV/STI prevention and intervention. This is a measure of self-efficacy for using condoms designed for Hispanic women (in Spanish or English). Either a 15-item measure or a brief 5-item version may be used. All items have a ten-point scale. Internal consistency of the full measure was good (Cronbach’s alpha = .92), as was the brief scale was (Cronbach’s alpha = .80). The total score of the brief scale was significantly correlated with the full scale total score, rs = .93, p < .001.
