We report on the synthesis, characterization, and stability studies of new titanocene complexes containing a methyl group and a carboxylate ligand (mba = −OC(O)-p-C6H4-S−) bound to gold(I)−N-heterocyclic carbene fragments through the thiolate group: [(η5-C5H5)2TiMe(μ-mba)Au(NHC)]. The cytotoxicities of the heterometallic compounds along with those of novel monometallic gold−N-heterocyclic carbene precursors [(NHC)Au(mbaH)] have been evaluated against renal, prostate, colon, and breast cancer cell lines. The highest activity and selectivity and a synergistic effect of the resulting heterometallic species was found for the prostate and colon cancer cell lines. The colocalization of both titanium and gold metals (1:1 ratio) in PC3 prostate cancer …

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress responses through the IRE-1/XBP-1 pathway are required for the function of STING (TMEM173), an ER-resident transmembrane protein critical for cytoplasmic DNA sensing, IFN production, and cancer control. Here we show that the IRE-1/XBP-1 pathway functions downstream of STING and that STING agonists selectively trigger mitochondria-mediated apoptosis in normal and malignant B cells. Upon stimulation, STING was degraded less efficiently in B cells, implying that prolonged activation of STING can lead to apoptosis. Transient activation of the IRE-1/XBP-1 pathway partially protected agonist-stimulated malignant B cells from undergoing apoptosis. In Eμ-TCL1 mice with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, injection of …

Nondestructive Evaluation & Radar Imaging Using Terahertz Signals, D. Amal Mirando, Michael D. Higgins, Sonya Sokhey, Matthew Larson, Douglas T. Petkie
Celebration of Undergraduate & Graduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials
Nondestructive imaging is a method of examining a material without direct contact that additionally does not alter the properties of the material. The terahertz imaging system currently in development uses the principle of interferometry (a Michelson Interferometer) such that frequency modulated terahertz signals are split and directed to the object under study and a reference mirror; then the detector will acquire the intensity of the combined reflected signals that contains information about the objects in the path of the beam.

Military couples face significant challenges to their relationships including demanding schedules, multiple deployments, and frequent moves. Despite the high costs of chronic marital distress, very few military (or civilian) couples seek marriage therapy. The military services and the VA system have implemented collaborative care models in primary care where internal behavioral health consultants are integrated into primary care. Integrated primary care can reduce the stigma of behavioral health services and may increase the odds that couples would seek help earlier. There are no established couple interventions designed for use in primary care. The purpose of this presentation is to describe …

Cities are increasingly outfitted with sensors for monitoring various conditions such as traffic, weather, air quality, and infrastructure related issues. Such well outfitted cities are generating massive amounts of multi-modal data leading to daunting challenges in assimilating, visualizing, and making sense of this data by city authorities and citizens. We propose City360 to address these challenges and provide decision support to city authorities and citizens. We demonstrate the utility of our system through concrete use cases for San Francisco Bay area that utilize heterogeneous data from various open city data sources.

Discriminative Stimulus Properties Of 3.0 Mg/Kg Mephedrone In Rats, Nathyn Thompson
Honors Theses
Consumption of a prominent synthetic cathinone known as mephedrone (4-methylmethcathinone) has become a popular alternative to club drugs such as ecstasy, cocaine, and methamphetamine within the past decade. The pharmacological mechanisms that contribute to its subjective effects have yet to be fully characterized and are thus warranted for investigation. The present study employed drug discrimination methods to train eight male Sprague-Dawley rats to discriminate injections of 3.0 mg/kg mephedrone from saline. Various doses of mephedrone, 3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), d-amphetamine (AMPH), cocaine, (+)-methamphetamine (METH), and 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) were investigated for their ability to substitute for the stimulus cues of the training …
Memory Support For Adults With Alzheimer’S Disease: Applications For Speech-Language Pathologists, Laura Dober
Memory Support For Adults With Alzheimer’S Disease: Applications For Speech-Language Pathologists, Laura Dober
Honors Theses
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and is known to cause progressive and severely debilitating impairments in cognition, especially in memory. Deficits in memory and cognition are clearly reflected in the communication of people diagnosed with this progressive, degenerative, incurable disease, placing speech-language pathologists as important members of a care team for adults with AD. Speech-language pathologists provide treatment to support memory, and therefore communication, in people with AD through direct and indirect methods. Some examples of memory supportive strategies include spaced-retrieval learning, the use of external memory aids and assistive technology, Montessori methods, and manipulations …

Publications and Research
Mitomycin C (MC) is a cytotoxic and mutagenic antitumor agent that alkylates DNA upon reductive activation. 2,7-Diaminomitosene (2,7-DAM) is a major metabolite of MC in tumor cells, which also alkylates DNA. MC forms seven DNA adducts, including monoadducts and inter- and intrastrand cross-links, whereas 2,7-DAM forms two monoadducts. Herein, the biological effects of the dG-N2 adducts formed by MC and 2,7-DAM have been compared by constructing single-stranded plasmids containing these adducts and replicating them in human embryonic kidney 293T cells. Translesion synthesis (TLS) efficiencies of dG-N2-MC and dG-N2-2,7-DAM were 38 ± 3 and 27 …

Animal-Assisted Therapy For Military Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: An Investigation On The Positive Effects Of Attachment And Affiliation Behaviors, Sara Miele
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops in people who have experienced a traumatic event (nimh.nih.gov, 2016). Because PTSD is a chronic disorder, it is associated with impaired quality of life (Stern et al., 2013). A specific population at high risk for developing PTSD is military veterans. It is estimated over half a million military veterans suffer from PTSD (Stern et al., 2013). Although there are psychological services and treatments for veterans, many do not seek help because fear of the negative stigma associated with mental illness (Lanning & Krenek, 2013). Recently, efforts have been made to implement veteran friendly treatment in …

The Effect Of Therapeutic Listening On Bilateral Coordination, Avery Wilson, Michael Yra Munchua, Mios Buccat, Morgan Mousley, Amanda Grace Irao
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Therapeutic Listening® is a sound-based treatment developed by Sheila Frick, OTR, rooted in sensory integration (Frick & Young, 2009). In Therapeutic Listening® programs, clients listen to music that has been electronically altered (Hall & Case-Smith, 2007). Therapeutic Listening® is an intervention increasingly used by occupational therapists despite the lack of supporting evidence in current literature.
A previous thesis study attempted to determine the effectiveness of Therapeutic Listening® through the outcome measure of bilateral movement. In the previous thesis study, three assessments were used to measure bilateral coordination in typically developing children. However, the quantifiable results did not reflect the qualitative …

Adults With Autism: What Happens After 18?, Nicole A. Pacwa
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Autism diagnoses have recently been on the rise, which eventually leads to young adults and their families having to figure out what to do for the future. Unfortunately, the services that these children grow up with will no longer are applicable once they turn 18. Families need to think about possible paths that would work best for their child. Some options would be a transitional school that could provide services and learning opportunities, group living communities that offer support while giving the individual a chance to live on his or her own while being supported, or vocational support that offers …

Are Healthcare Providers Prepared To Provide Care For The Lgbt Community?, Sam Dao
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Current research generally questions that the healthcare system does not provide as adequate services for the LGBT community as there are for heterosexuals. Baumle’s research show that health care benefits were not equal for LGBT and provided health insurance percentages were lower for gays and lesbians than for heterosexuals (2014). Understanding and improving the factors that influence the health of LGBT people is limited due the the lack of population-based data (The Pride Study 2015). In order to begin improving the health and health care of the LGBT community, awareness and practice of providing appropriate care for this certain population …

Error Reporting Behaviors, Agnes S. Fagerlund, Elizabeth H. Lazzara, Deborah Diazgranados
Human Factors and Applied Psychology Student Conference
Although patient safety is a focus with medical care, it has been influenced by the lack of safety culture in the environment (Vincent et al., 2000). Preventable medical errors continue to plague healthcare and cost close to $1 trillion annually (Andel et al., 2012). Despite the prevalence of medical errors, only one of seven errors are reported (Levinson, 2010). Understanding the behaviors that influence reporting is imperative to developing patient safety reporting initiatives. Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior identifies behaviors as based on a combination of beliefs, intentions, and social control (1988). Applying this model to error reporting, we hypothesize …

Handoffs require critical information transfers that are clear, comprehensible, and correct from receiver to sender. There are many factors that influence the reliability of the information in a handoff procedure, and impact the subsequent choices that are made that affect patient care. Using the Input – Mediator – Output – Input model multiple factors that influence the information transfer process have been identified to better handoff communication and in turn, lead to better patient care. The IMOI model is a recently developed theory that claims the productivity and value of interaction among team members can be influenced by cognitive, affective, …

An In Vitro And In Vivo Investigation Of Bivalent Ligands That Display Preferential Binding And Functional Activity For Different Melanocortin Receptor Homodimers, Cody J Lensing, Katie T Freeman, Sathya M Schnell, Danielle N Adank, Robert Charles Speth, Carrie Haskell-Luevano
Faculty Articles
Pharmacological probes for the melanocortin receptors have been utilized for studying various disease states including cancer, sexual function disorders, Alzheimer's disease, social disorders, cachexia, and obesity. This study focused on the design and synthesis of bivalent ligands to target melanocortin receptor homodimers. Lead ligands increased binding affinity by 14- to 25-fold and increased cAMP signaling potency by 3- to 5-fold compared to their monovalent counterparts. Unexpectedly, different bivalent ligands showed preferences for particular melanocortin receptor subtypes depending on the linker that connected the binding scaffolds, suggesting structural differences between the various dimer subtypes. Homobivalent compound 12 possessed a functional profile …
High Performance Bayesian Applications In Medical, Economics And Climate Sciences, Ahmed Almulihi
High Performance Bayesian Applications In Medical, Economics And Climate Sciences, Ahmed Almulihi
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
We apply high performance numerical integration to problems in Bayesian statistics. These are applied to data arising in the analysis of problems in such areas as medical statistics (birth weight data, heart transplant data, photocarcinogen data, radio therapy data), climate (global weather, tornado data), and general statistics applications (multivariate logistic distribution, multivariate normal, nonlinear regression). We compute Bayesian moment integrals using the ParInt integration software that runs efficiently on computer clusters. We compare our results to those in the literature and show excellent performance with respect to accuracy and execution time.
