Prenatal alcohol and nicotine exposure have well known physiological effects on the fetus. However, it is the goal of this thesis to inform the reader of of the deleterious effects that these substances can have on cognitive and behavioral development in children. A literature review in relation to this topic was conducted through online databases using key words. Though some of the results were inconsistent, enough evidence exists for women to be educated on the increased risks for cognitive and behavioral deficits in children exposed to alcohol and nicotine in utero.

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to find whether maternal visceral tissue (VAT) or subcutaneous fat tissue (SCFT) thicknesses are associated with CRP, HbA1c, lipid, and biochemical parameters in the first trimester of pregnancy. Materials and methods: Ninety pregnant women were enrolled. Body mass index (BMI), VAT, and SCFT were measured. The best cut-off points for grouping subjects were found to be 4 cm for VAT and 2 cm for SCFT. Venous blood samples were collected. Results: VAT was higher than 4 cm in all cases with high BMIs. Background/aim: Pneumocardiography (PNCG) is the recording method of cardiac-induced tracheal air flow and pressure pulsations in the respiratory airways. PNCG signals reflect both the lung and heart actions and could be accurately recorded in spontaneously breathing anesthetized rats. Nonlinear analysis methods, including the Lyapunov exponent, can be used to explain the biological dynamics of systems such as the cardiorespiratory system. Background/aim: Macrolide and lincosamide antibiotics are used for the treatment of staphylococcal infections, especially for penicillin-allergic patients. In the present study, we evaluate the prevalence of resistance to macrolide and lincosamide antibiotics among staphylococci isolates. Materials and methods: A total of 200 staphylococcal clinical isolates were collected from January 2012 to April 2013. Minimal inhibitory concentrations of erythromycin and clindamycin were determined by agar dilution method. An erythromycin-clindamycin induction test was performed for isolates that were only resistant to erythromycin. The Effect Of Deep Sclerectomy On Ocular Blood Flow: A 6-Month Clinical Trial, Arzu Özsoy, Murat Si̇nan Saricaoğlu, Mehtap Çavuşoğlu

Background/aim: To investigate the effect of deep sclerectomy on retrobulbar blood flow. Materials and methods: This prospective study included 20 eyes of 20 patients with open angle glaucoma. Color Doppler imaging (CDI) examinations were performed before and 2, 12, and 24 weeks after deep sclerectomy. Peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV), and resistance index (RI) were measured for the ophthalmic artery (OA), central retinal artery (CRA), and temporal and nasal short posterior ciliary arteries (SPCAs) at each examination and the results were compared. Results: A significant decrease was determined in intraocular pressure (IOP) (P < 0.001) and a significant increase in ocular perfusion pressure (OPP) (P < 0.001) at all postoperative examinations. The EDV in OA increased significantly (P < 0.001), but the change in RI was not statistically significant (P = 0.67). EDV increased and RI decreased significantly in CRA and SPCA (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Deep sclerectomy decreases IOP and increases OPP significantly. Retrobulbar blood flow was seen to improve after deep sclerectomy.

Background/aim: To analyze the potency of a modified early warning score (EWS) to help predict hospital mortality when used for surveillance in nonacute medical wards. Materials and methods: Patients in internal medicine wards were prospectively recruited. First, highest, and last scores; and mean daily score recordings and values were recorded. Nurses calculated scores for each patient upon admission and every 4 h. The last score was the score before death, discharge, or transfer to another ward. Background/aim: To evaluate changes in growth and bone metabolism during consumption of a gluten-free diet (GFD) in children with coeliac disease (CD). Materials and methods: Thirty-seven children with CD (mean age of 8.8 ± 4.6 years, 21 girls) were enrolled. Anthropometric measurements, bone mineral density (BMD) in lumbar 2-4 vertebrae, and serum alkaline phosphatase, calcium, and phosphorus levels at diagnosis and at follow-up were recorded. This was a single blinded randomized study with an intervention group and a control group to examine a modification in lifestyle and an 8-minute exercise session each day to lose weight. Fifty-seven female subjects participated. Piperlongumine (piplartine, 1) is a small molecule alkaloid that is receiving intense interest due to its antiproliferative and anticancer activities. We investigated the effects of 1 on tubulin and microtubules. Using both an isolated tubulin assay, and a combination of sedimentation and Western blotting, we demonstrated that 1 is a tubulin-destabilising agent. This result was confirmed by immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy, which showed that microtubules in MCF-7 breast cancer cells were depolymerised when treated with 1. Longitudinal studies are important to fully understand the processes of neurological development during gestation and how risk factors present during this time impact motor development outcomes, yet few to date have focused on this critical time period.

The purpose of this study was to identify modifiable risk factors influencing motor development during the prenatal period. Of particular interest was finding out whether these risk factors differed between the sexes.
