High Potency Eugeroics-- Wake-Promoting Agents Beyond Modafinil, Joseph Yoham Apr 2015

High Potency Eugeroics-- Wake-Promoting Agents Beyond Modafinil, Joseph Yoham

Biomedical Engineering

Modafinil (Provigil) belongs to a new pharmaceutical class known as eugeroics— wake-promoting agents. Directly enhancing conductance across neuronal membranes, modafinil, amplifies presynaptic Na/Ca influx; resultant widespread depolarization of cortical interneurons could theoretically allow transient, voltage-dependent inhibition of monoamine reuptake- resembling action of conventional stimulants, minus the stereotypy, euphoria, and locomotor effects. This literature review presents a hypothesized mechanism of action, consolidates research of modafinil analogues and hybridizes a novel compound in search of a next generation molecule.

Short-Wavelength Enrichment Of Polychromatic Light Enhances Human Melatonin Suppression Potency., George Brainard, John P. Hanifin, Benjamin Warfield, Marielle K. Stone, Mary E. James, Melissa Ayers, Alan Kubey, Brenda Byrne, Mark Rollag Apr 2015

Short-Wavelength Enrichment Of Polychromatic Light Enhances Human Melatonin Suppression Potency., George Brainard, John P. Hanifin, Benjamin Warfield, Marielle K. Stone, Mary E. James, Melissa Ayers, Alan Kubey, Brenda Byrne, Mark Rollag

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

The basic goal of this research is to determine the best combination of light wavelengths for use as a lighting countermeasure for circadian and sleep disruption during space exploration, as well as for individuals living on Earth. Action spectra employing monochromatic light and selected monochromatic wavelength comparisons have shown that short-wavelength visible light in the blue-appearing portion of the spectrum is most potent for neuroendocrine, circadian, and neurobehavioral regulation. The studies presented here tested the hypothesis that broad spectrum, polychromatic fluorescent light enriched in the short-wavelength portion of the visible spectrum is more potent for pineal melatonin suppression in healthy …

Fibromyalgia Syndrome: Considerations For Dental Hygienists, Amber Walters, Susan L. Tolle, Gayle M. Mccombs

Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications

PURPOSE: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a neurosensory disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain. Typically persistent fatigue, depression, limb stiffness, non-refreshing sleep and cognitive deficiencies are also experienced. Oral symptoms and pain are common, requiring adaptations in patient management strategies and treatment interventions. Appropriate dental hygiene care of patients suffering with this disorder is contingent upon an understanding of disease epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical characteristics, oral signs and symptoms, as well as treatment approaches. With this information dental hygienists will be better prepared to provide appropriate and effective treatment to patients with FMS.

Abstract

Objective. To determine the electrolyte derangement following transurethral resection of prostate (TURP). Methods. All patients undergoing TURP from June 2012 to April 2013 were included. Preoperative electrolytes were performed within a week of procedures. Monopolar TURP using 1.5% glycine was performed. Serum Na(+) and K(+) were assessed within 1 hour postoperatively and subsequently if clinically indicated. Results. The study included 280 patients. Sixty-six patients (23.6%) had electrolyte derangement after TURP. Patients with deranged electrolytes were older (mean age of 73.41 ± 4.08 yrs. versus 68.93 yrs. ± 10.34) and had a longer mean resection time (42.5 ± 20.04 min …

2nd Place Research Paper: Treatment Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In A Veteran Population: Efficacy Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Therapies, Brooke D. Snelgrove

Kevin and Tam Ross Undergraduate Research Prize

It is estimated that a half million veterans from recent deployments in the Middle East conflicts and about 479,000 veterans deployed during the Vietnam War are diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Current treatments are limited by a relatively high frequency of patients who do not continue with their therapy. With increased PTSD diagnosis and limited effectiveness of treatments, there is a growing need to research and develop new therapies to better assist affected service members. The present study assessed the clinical validity of Complementary and Alternative Medicine therapies for the treatment of PTSD symptoms in a military population …
