Understanding And Treating Emergence Delirium, Peter Currie Apr 2015

Understanding And Treating Emergence Delirium, Peter Currie

Nurse Anesthesia MSNA Student Capstones

This paper examines our current understanding of the phenomena of emergence delirium, which can occur following general anesthesia. Much research has been conducted to elucidate the causative factors of this condition, with findings ranging from anxiety to volatile agents and the neurodevelopment of the brain (Aono, Ueda, & Mamiya, 1997; Kain et al., 2004; McLott, Jurecic, Hemphill, & Dunn, 2013). While much of our understanding of emergence delirium has come from studying children, who are more prone to this condition, we can attempt to learn even more by examining the increased incidence of emergence delirium that occurs in those with …

The geriatric population defined as individuals 65 years of age or older is expected to increase to 20% of the total population by the year 2020. This population currently makes up one-third of the surgical population and is projected to double by 2020. The perioperative risks for this population are also increased and pose significant increases in morbidity and mortality. The need for a detailed preoperative assessment is crucial in any surgical patient. It is increasingly imperative for the geriatric surgical patient as assessment is vital for the surgical team to make decisions regarding the projected necessity, plan and desired …

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

CONTEXT: Hormonal and mechanical factors make obstetric patients need strict dose calculations of local anesthetics intrathecally for spinal anesthesia. Any greater dose of local anesthetics can cause hemodynamic instability, maternal morbidity and any lesser dose can produce inadequate block. Hence, we hypothesized in our study that by using low dose of bupivacaine with fentanyl can maintain stable hemodynamics and provide better analgesia.

AIM: The aim was to compare the hemodynamics and duration of analgesia using a low dose (7.5 mg) bupivacaine fentanyl mixture to a conventional dose (10 mg) of hyperbaric bupivacaine for cesarean section.

Are We Empowered? A Qualitative Approach To Unfold The Experiences Of Female Nurses In Pakistan, Saleema A. Gulzar, Rozina Karmaliani, Nasreen Lalani, Qurratulain Nasiruddin

School of Nursing & Midwifery

The disparity of men and women in certain societies, such as Pakistan, is a growing concern. The disparity, unchanging mind-set, and definitions rooted in traditions do not free individuals from the socially bound gender identities. In such circumstances, educational institutions can become a way of transforming social structures. Considering female nurses in Pakistan as a case study, this paper explores the notion of “empowerment” and the factors responsible for empowerment or disempowerment of female nurses. The study also evaluates the role of a leading nursing institution in Pakistan namely the Aga Khan University- School of Nursing and Midwifery (AKUSONAM) in …

Promoting Adult Pertussis Vaccination In The Workplace, Jennifer Bainum, Karlen Beth Luthy, Renea L. Beckstrand, Janelle L. B. Macintosh, Lacey M. Eden

Student Works

Vaccines are an important disease prevention strategy among individuals of all age groups. Despite the success of vaccinations in preventing communicable diseases, adults, in particular, often have sub-optimal vaccination rates. Consequently, some vaccine-preventable diseases, such as pertussis, are still on the rise in the United States despite the availability of the Tdap vaccine. As most adults can be found in the workplace, occupational health and environmental health nurses (OHEHNs) are in a unique role to encourage employers to promote adequate Tdap vaccination among their employees. As specific resources regarding Tdap vaccination are lacking, the Pertussis Prevention Toolkit was developed to …

Emergency physicians have used point-of-care ultrasonography since the 1990 s. Pediatric emergency medicine physicians have more recently adopted this technology. Point-of-care ultrasonography is used for various scenarios, particularly the evaluation of soft tissue infections or blunt abdominal trauma and procedural guidance. To date, there are no published statements from national organizations specifically for pediatric emergency physicians describing the incorporation of point-of-care ultrasonography into their practice. This document outlines how pediatric emergency departments may establish a formal point-of-care ultrasonography program. This task includes appointing leaders with expertise in point-of-care ultrasonography, effectively training and credentialing physicians in the department, and providing ongoing …
