Exploring The Usability Of Game-Based Virtual Reality For Development Of Procedural Skills In Undergraduate Nursing Students, Ann Louise Butt

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Providing safe, high quality patient care requires that undergraduate nursing students learn and apply extensive content knowledge as they also begin to develop clinical judgment. Nursing students must learn several procedural skills and be ready to remember and competently perform these skills when the need arises during patient care. Some procedures require strict adherence to aseptic technique in order to protect patients from hospital-acquired infections. Consequently, nurse educators are challenged to find innovative and interactive ways to help students develop and remember these important fundamental skills while ensuring patient safety.

This study used a mixed methods design to explore the …

Prevalence And Risk Factors For Neck And Shoulder Musculoskeletal Symptoms In Users Of Touch-Screen Tablet Computers, Betina Blair, Mariana Gama, Marissa Toberman

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Background and Purpose:

Neck and upper extremity symptoms are common health complaints in the general population and cause a substantial financial burden to the health care system. Neck pain is known to be a multi factorial disorder, with head and spinal posture being one of the most important factors. Currently there is little evidence showing a relationship between touch-screen tablet computer usage and neck/upper extremity pathologies. However, it is fair to postulate that the incidence of neck/upper extremity pathologies is higher within touch-screen tablet computer users, considering how users maintain static postures while using the device. The primary purposes of …

Compensatory Fetal Membrane Mechanisms Between Biglycan And Decorin In Inflammation., Luciana Batalha De Miranda De Araujo, Casie E Horgan, Abraham Aron, Renato V. Iozzo, Beatrice E Lechner

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Preterm premature rupture of fetal membranes (PPROM) is associated with infection, and is one of the most common causes of preterm birth. Abnormal expression of biglycan and decorin, two extracellular matrix proteoglycans, leads to preterm birth and aberrant fetal membrane morphology and signaling in the mouse. In humans and mice, decorin dysregulation is associated with inflammation in PPROM. We therefore investigated the link between biglycan and decorin and inflammation in fetal membranes using mouse models of intraperitoneal Escherichia coli injections superimposed on genetic biglycan and decorin deficiencies. We assessed outcomes in vivo as well as in vitro using quantitative PCR, …

Effects Of Chronic Manganese Exposure On Attention And Working Memory In Non-Human Primates., Jay S. Schneider, Charles Williams, Mark Ault, Tomás R. Guilarte

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Manganese (Mn) is essential for a variety of physiological processes, but at elevated levels, can be neurotoxic. While cognitive dysfunction has been recently appreciated to occur as a result of chronic Mn exposures, it is still unclear as to which cognitive domains are most susceptible to disruption by Mn exposure. We previously described early appearing Mn-induced changes in performance on a paired associate learning task in monkeys chronically exposed to Mn and suggested that performance of this task might be a sensitive tool for detecting cognitive dysfunction resulting from Mn exposure. As chronic Mn exposure has been suggested to be …

Structural-Based Investigation Of Fak And P130cas In Focal Adhesion, Chi Zhang

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Cell migration is an integrated multistep process accompanying us throughout life, from birth to death. It contributes to a variety of biological activities and has been implicated in many pathological conditions, including cancer, primary immunodeficiency diseases, vascular diseases, and mental retardation. Cell migration has been considered to be a three-step cyclic process including polarization, protrusion and retraction. The initiation and extension of the protrusion is driven by actin polymerization, and is stabilized by attaching to the extracellular matrix (ECM) or adjacent cells. The cell-ECM attachment sites are named focal adhesions (FAs), which are dynamic, large protein complexes containing more than …

Design, Development, Characterization And Testing Of Cd22 Targeted Long Circulating Liposomal Drug Delivery Systems For B Cell Malignancies, Nivesh Kumar Mittal

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Hematological malignances of the B cells affect almost 130,000 people in the United States every year of which approximately 44,000 lose their lives. Therapies for B cell malignancies such as doxorubicin, have limitations due to dose related adverse effects such as neutropenia and cardiomyopathy. AD 198 is a novel PKC-delta activating agent that has cytotoxic superiority over doxorubicin by being able to circumvent resistance mechanisms developed by the cancer cells towards doxorubicin and being cadioprotective from the damage caused to cardiomyocytes by doxorubicin. Targeted delivery of AD 198 is crucial to moderate the non-specific interactions of the chemotherapeutic agent with …

Integration Of Atm, Atr, And Dna-Pkcs Signaling Maintains Genome Integrity During Neurogenesis, Vanessa D. Enriquez-Rios

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The DNA damage response (DDR) orchestrates a network of cellular processes such as cell cycle progression, DNA repair, and apoptosis when complex DNA lesions arise to maintain genomic integrity. ATM, ATR, and DNA-PKcs (encoded by PRKDC) are related phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase like serine/threonine kinases (PIKK) that collectively regulate the DDR network. Studies have demonstrated these kinases can phosphorylate many of the same substrates, suggesting a significant potential for functional redundancy. However, deficiencies in these kinases have been linked to distinct neural degenerative and developmental disorders, underscoring their unique functions for maintain genomic integrity during nervous system development.

Here we utilized mouse genetic …
