Impact Of B. Melitensis Rev-1 Vaccination On Brucellosis Prevalence, Adosinda Maria Coelho, Maria De Lurdes Pinto, Juan Garcia Diez, Ana Claudia Coelho
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, in the northeastern region of Portugal, previously exhibited the highest brucellosis prevalence in the entire small ruminant population of Portugal. Consequently, a vaccination program of the whole population with Brucella melitensis Rev-1 was carried out from 2001 to 2004, and further compulsory Rev-1 vaccination of 3- to 6-month-old lambs and kids was carried out between 2005 and 2007. The prevalence of brucellosis decreased by 71.42% in 2004, with a 2-fold decrease occurring from 2005 to 2007. The reduction of brucellosis prevalence was statistically significant (P < 0.001) according to flock size. By species, brucellosis prevalence decreased 14.5-fold in sheep and 5.5-fold in goats in 2004. Regarding flock constitution, it decreased by 77% for pure flocks and 73% in mixed flocks in 2004. Regarding the animals involved in production, brucellosis prevalence decreased during the 7-year period. It was concluded that Rev-1 vaccination of the whole population was effective in decreasing brucellosis prevalence. These results contribute to the scarce information available regarding the effect of Rev-1 vaccination on different characteristics of flocks. They may be used to improve the efficiency of brucellosis eradication programs within livestock management.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study assessed the effects of cellulase, xylanase, and their mixture (1:1, v/v) on in vitro rumen fermentation of five mixed rations with different maize silage (F) to concentrate (C) ratios (0F:100C, 25F:75C, 50F:50C, 75F:25C, 100F:0C). Samples were incubated using rumen inoculum from Brown Swiss cows fed ad libitum a total mixed ration of concentrate and alfalfa hay (1:1). Gas production (GP) was recorded after 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 72 h of incubation. Interaction effects (P < 0.0001) were observed between type of ration and enzyme for discrete lag time prior to GP. Ration type affected asymptotic GP (linear and quadratic, P < 0.0001) and in vitro GP at 24 h onward. Moreover, rations affected pH (linear and quadratic, P < 0.0001), dry matter degradability (quadratic, P = 0.05), metabolizable energy (linear, P = 0.038), short-chain fatty acids (linear, P = 0.0005), gas yield from truly digested dry matter at 24 h (linear, P = 0.0026), and microbial crude protein yield (linear, P = 0.0264). The most effective rations for in vitro GP during different times differed between different measured parameters. Enzyme administration was more effective when the ratio of maize silage was increased.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary red grape pomace (RGP) on amino acid digestibility (AIAAD), intestinal microflora, and antioxidant activity in the sera and liver. Sixty-six broilers were housed in battery cages. They were allocated to six cages corresponding to two dietary treatments with three replicates of each treatment. The treatments were administered from 10 to 36 days and included a control diet and a diet containing 1.5% RGP dry powder with the other components remaining unchanged, compared to the control. The RGP had a significant (P < 0.05) positive effect on the apparent metabolizable energy. The majority of coefficients of AIAAD were higher in the RGP. The ileal digestibility of threonine, serine, proline, and glycine was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in RGP. RGP had a positive effect (P < 0.05) on the content of Lactobacillus in the lower part of the ileum. The blood sera of broilers fed RGP had significantly (P < 0.05) lower 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and uric acid content. The RGP at a concentration of 15 g/kg in the grower diet did not affect the growth of broilers, and RGP is suitable for broiler diets to improve gastrointestinal tract functionality.

Comparison Of Sevoflurane And Isoflurane Effects On Cardiovascular Andrespiratory System During Spontaneous Ventilation In Angora Goats, Ali̇ Kumandaş, Ertuğrul Elma
Comparison Of Sevoflurane And Isoflurane Effects On Cardiovascular Andrespiratory System During Spontaneous Ventilation In Angora Goats, Ali̇ Kumandaş, Ertuğrul Elma
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Seven healthy Angora goats were used to compare the effects of isoflurane and sevoflurane on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems during anesthesia periods. Once anesthesia was induced with propofol at 5.1 ± 0.9 mg/kg, it was maintained with isoflurane at 1%-3% in the first treatment period and sevoflurane at 2%-4% in the second treatment period after a 15-day interval. Heart rates measured immediately after anesthesia induction and 5 min later were found to be statistically significant between anesthetic groups (P < 0.05). Mean blood pressure in the isoflurane group decreased (75.7 ± 7.2 to 59.8 ± 9.8 mmHg) (P < 0.05) throughout the anesthesia period. It was determined that respiratory rate in sevoflurane treatment was lower than that in isoflurane treatment. In terms of time to stand up, sevoflurane-administered animals recovered significantly faster than animals intubated with isoflurane anesthesia (13.1 ± 4.4 and 25.0 ± 8.6 min) (P < 0.05). According to cardiopulmonary values, the respiratory rate was lower in the sevoflurane-applied animals compared to that of those receiving isoflurane anesthesia, although the difference was not statistically significant, and hypercapnia were not observed in either group. Consequently, it was determined that in the Angora goat, propofol-sevoflurane anesthesia exerts lower pressure on the cardiovascular system than isoflurane anesthesia. At the same time, recovery from sevoflurane anesthesia was shorter, and therefore it can be preferred to other anesthesia agents for routine anesthesia.

Polymorphisms Of Ovine Prion Protein (Prp) Gene In Pramenka Sheepbreed Population In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Ervin Zecevic, Admir Dokso, Amra Kazic, Muhamed Brka
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are a group of diseases that affect the nervous system and lead to death. The putative infectious agent is the host-encoded prion protein (PrP) and it appears that the development of scrapie in sheep is closely related to polymorphisms in the host PrP gene. The aim of this study was to investigate three well-known polymorphisms in exon 3 of the PrP gene (at codons 136, 154, and 171) that have a clear and significant effect on scrapie in sheep. Four other polymorphisms (at codons 145, 185, 231, and 237) that are yet undefined were also investigated. …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of hydrolyzed and live forms of yeast products from Saccharomyces cerevisiae on in vitro fermentation of a 50:50 forage:concentrate substrate using the rumen simulation technique (Rusitec). The Rusitec system consisted of nine fermentation vessels: three of them received daily 0.5 g/L hydrolyzed yeast, three vessels received daily 0.5 g/L live yeast, and three vessels received no additives (control). After an adaptation period of 7 days, the main fermentation characteristics were evaluated for 7 consecutive days. Ruminal pH was decreased (P < 0.05) by hydrolyzed yeast, whereas no effects were observed after live yeast treatment. Both hydrolyzed and live yeasts tended to increase butyrate production (P = 0.052). Acetate to propionate ratio was significantly higher (P < 0.05) for live yeast. Both products increased NH3-N concentration, and it was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in live yeast in comparison with that in hydrolyzed yeast. Digestibility of dry matter was not significantly affected by both yeast treatments. Overall, these results showed that different types of yeast products in terms of their viability status had significant actions in ruminal microbial metabolism in different ways.

Conservation And Management Of Fallow Deer (Dama Dama Dama L.)On Lemnos Island, Greece, Mariama Mattila, Ioannis Hadjigeorgiou
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A small population of European fallow deer (Dama dama dama L.) was transferred to Myrina, Lemnos Island, Greece, in the early 1970s from the island of Rhodes. Since the Rhodian population may preserve a remarkable proportion of the original genetic diversity, it is necessary to preserve its offspring population. Our objective was to estimate population size, vegetation cover, and key stakeholder attitudes towards deer on the island, based on personal interviews. Following the visual inspection method, we estimated that there were 47 fallow deer in the fortress area (38 females, 3 males, and 6 fawns). For the total ground cover …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Concentration activity levels of selected radionuclides in skulls of European badger from eastern Poland were determined. It was found that studied skull bones contained on average 1.6 ± 1.7 Bq kg-1 of 137Cs (range: 0-6.4 Bq kg-1), 2.2 ± 0.87 Bq kg-1 of 90Sr (range: 0.93-3.9 Bq kg-1), and 8.4 ± 4.1 Bq kg-1 of 239+240Pu (range: 0-53 Bq kg-1). These values prove to be rather low in comparison with earlier literature data on anthropogenic radionuclides (being a result of the Chernobyl fallout) present in skulls of other mammals. This suggests that migration processes of anthropogenic radionuclides have caused a …

The study included 40 calves: group I was the control group (n = 20) and group II consisted of calves with diarrhea and lactic acidosis (n = 20). The highest lactate concentration (5.49 ± 2.58 mmol/L) was documented in diarrheic calves. The diarrheic calves presented with significantly lower pH, pCO2, and concentrations of HCO3- (P < 0.01), and with higher anion gap (AG), strong ion difference (SID3, SID7), and strong ion gap (SIG) (P < 0.01) than the controls. In the group of diarrheic calves lactic acid correlated with AG (r = 0.684, P < 0.01), SID3 (r = 0.718, P < 0.01), SID7 (r = 0.494, P = 0.03), and SIG (r = 0.561, P = 0.01). There was a negative correlation between lactate and effective SID (SIDEff) (r = -0.499, P = 0.02), and total plasma concentration of nonvolatile buffers (ATot ) (r = -0.361, P = 0.04). The results indicated that in lactic acidosis there were specific disturbances with an increased concentration of unmeasured strong ions.

In this study, the cardiac effects of anemia and venous thromboembolism (VTE), reportedly caused by the hemolyzed erythrocytes occurring in sheep with babesiosis, were investigated using cardiac markers and D-dimer (DD). The study included 34 sheep: 24 infected Akkaraman sheep (1-3 years old, diagnosed with babesiosis based on clinical and laboratory findings) and a control group of 10 noninfected healthy sheep of the same breed and age. Hematocrit (Hct) levels were measured in blood obtained from both groups. Cardiac troponin I (cTnI), creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were measured in serum samples. In addition, the levels of …

This study was undertaken to measure the effect of fattening duration (60, 80, and 100 days) on growth performance and carcass characteristics of male kids from indigenous Hair and Honamlı goat breeds reared under intensive fattening systems in Turkey. Fattening duration had a significant effect (P < 0.001) on the fattening performance and a number of carcass characteristics of kids. An interaction was detected between genotype and fattening duration for average daily gain (ADG). Hair goat kids grew at a faster rate than Honamlı kids in the 20-40 day and 40-60 day fattening periods, but they maintained relatively similar ADGs within other fattening periods. On average, over the course of the fattening trial, Honamlı kids grew at an average daily rate of 209 g/head, while Hair goat kids grew at a daily rate of 231 g/head. Dressing percentage and carcass lean and fat percentages of kids increased (P < 0.05-0.001) with slaughter age and weight for both genotypes, whereas the percentage of bone decreased (P < 0.001) with each successive fattening period. No genotypic differences were detected for a number of carcass characteristics at the time of slaughter, with the exception of relatively higher (P < 0.01) fat deposit rates within the kidney and pelvic areas for Hair kids.

Effects Of Long-Term Starvation And Refeeding On Fatty Acid Metabolism-Relatedgene Expressions In The Liver Of Zebrafish, Danio Rerio, Ayşe Ölmez, Mehtap Bayir, Chunfang Wang, Abdulkadi̇r Bayir
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A 70-day starvation was conducted to determine the effects of long-term starvation on whole-body polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition and fatty acid metabolism-related gene expression in the liver of zebrafish, Danio rerio. The starvation period was followed by a 15-day refeeding period to test recovery of both PUFA composition and gene expression levels. It was found that n-3 PUFA and arachidonic acid levels increased during starvation and returned to normal values after refeeding (P < 0.05). Expression of seven (elovl5, fads2, cpt1-β, acox1, acadvl, fabp1a, and fabp7a) of eight total genes downregulated significantly towards the end of the starvation. As a result of refeeding, gene expression of elovl5 and ppar-α returned to the normal levels. Therefore, it was concluded that, in general, mRNA expression of genes involved in fatty acid metabolism was negatively influenced by long-term starvation (70 days); there was no direct relationship between whole-body fatty acid composition and hepatic gene expressions; and 15-day refeeding was insufficient for recovery of starvation-based metabolic losses in zebrafish.

Pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamics (PD), and PK/PD ratios of a new solvate of enrofloxacin (enrofloxacin hydrochloride-dihydrate; enro-C), were studied in hamsters. Enrofloxacin from Baytril1397904493 5% (enroR) served as the reference preparation. Two groups of 60 Syrian golden hamsters were intramuscularly injected individually with 10 mg/kg of enroR or with enro-C. Tissue and serum samples were obtained for 72 h; enrofloxacin concentrations were determined by HPLC with UV detection. Ninety percent minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC90) were determined for strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Leptospira interrogans, and Escherichia coli. All PK variables were statistically different between groups (P < 0.01). CMAX of enrofloxacin for enro-C was 17.3 μg/mL and it was 2.6 μg/mL for enroR. AUC was considerably higher for enro-C (459.2 μg/mL h vs. 19.9 μg/mL h). There were no statistically significant differences in MIC90 values between enroR and enro-C. Tissue concentrations of enro-C in all cases were higher and remained above the MIC for longer periods than those of enroR. Relevant PK/PD ratios for enrofloxacin (AUC/MIC ? 125 and CMAX > MIC = 10-12) are consequently …
