Even with advanced collaborative technology, communication remains a critical component to the success of a mission. Command and Control (C2) operators rely heavily on radio and chat communication to efficiently plan, direct, coordinate, and control assets. With the shift towards network‐centric warfare, standard radio communication needs to meet the needs of today’s warfighter. A net‐centric communication management suite called Multi‐Modal Communication (MMC) has been developed to increase the performance and situational awareness of the operator while also alleviating the workload and errors associated with this communication intensive environment. Human-Centered Design To Support Flexibility And Adaptability In Airport Surface Management, Alicia Borgman Fernandes, Phillip J. Smith

Airport surface delays can impact airport surface congestion, operational costs, environmental emissions, and passenger satisfaction. We report on structured interviews and observational studies at two US airports with different approaches to managing surface delays. Each approach requires human judgment to set and adapt control parameters to manage departure flows. We contrast these approaches in terms of: 1) distribution of roles and responsibilities; 2) human judgments required; 3) enforcement of flight operator compliance; and 4) tools for coordination and decision support. Guidance is provided for designing and implementing human-centered surface management programs based on an analysis of these approaches.

Introduction Preterm birth is defined as a baby who is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Problems with preterm birth include an increased risk for health complications throughout life as well as having significantly more medical expenses compared to a full term infant. Prenatal care has shown to decrease the risk for preterm birth nationally. The objective of this project was to analyze prenatal care and other risk and demographic factors to determine their association with preterm birth in Montgomery County.

Infectious diseases are among the top causes of death in adults and children. Chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer are among the top causes of death in adults. Associations between bacterial and viral infectious agents and subsequent development of chronic disease have been made in the past but are currently being reexamined with more rigor and specificity. This review examines infectious disease agent causes and associations with cancer, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease, and neurodegenerative disease. These associations will impact future research, surveillance, treatment, and prevention of both infectious and chronic diseases.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Active duty US Army and Air Force military personnel undergo mandatory biennial HIV antibody screening. We compared pre- and post-HIV seroconversion health status by conducting a case-control study, which evaluated all medical encounters and sociodemographic factors among incident HIV seroconverters and HIV-negative controls from June 2000 through February 2004.

RESULTS: A total of 274 HIV seroconverters and 6205 HIV-negative personnel were included. In multivariate analysis restricted to male personnel (cases = 261, controls = 5801), single marital status (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 14.37), clinical indicators or symptoms within four years of HIV diagnosis (AOR = 6.22), …

Local regulation of vascular tone plays an important role in cardiovascular control of blood pressure. Aside from chemical or hormonal regulations, this local homeostasis is highly regulated by fluid-shear stress. It was previously unclear how vascular endothelial cells were able to sense fluid-shear stress. The cellular functions of mechanosensory cilia within vascular system have emerged recently. In particular, hypertension is insidious and remains a continuous problem that evolves during the course of polycystic kidney disease (PKD). The basic and clinical perspectives on primary cilia are discussed with regard to the pathogenesis of hypertension in PKD.

Despite the success of potent reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitors against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in combination regimens, the development of drug resistant RTs constitutes a major hurdle for the long-term efficacy of current antiretroviral therapy. Nucleoside β-triphosphate analogs of adenosine and nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) (3′-azido-2′,3′-dideoxythymidine (AZT), 3′-fluoro-2′,3′-dideoxythymidine (FLT), and 2′,3′-didehydro-2′,3′-dideoxythymidine (d4T)) were synthesized and their inhibitory activities were evaluated against wild-type and multidrug resistant HIV-1 RTs. KX2-391 (KX-01/Kinex Pharmaceuticals), N-benzyl-2-(5-(4-(2-morpholinoethoxy)phenyl)pyridin-2-yl)acetamide, is a highly selective Src substrate binding site inhibitor. To understand better the role of pyridine ring and N-benzylsubstitution in KX2-391 and establish the structure-activity relationship, a number of N-benzyl substituted (2-morpholinoethoxy)phenyl)thiazol-4-yl)acetamide derivatives containing thiazole instead of pyridine were synthesized and evaluated for Src kinase inhibitory activities. The unsubstituted N-benzyl derivative (8a) showed the inhibition of c-Src kinase with GI50 values of 1.34 μM and 2.30 M in NIH3T3/c-Src527F and SYF/c-Src527F cells, respectively. Background/Objectives: Appropriate initial treatment choices for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are very critical. The aim of this study was to compare the ability of Ceftobiprole, Daptomycin, Linezolid, Telavancin, Tigecycline, and Vancomycin to achieve their requisite pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) target against clinical MRSA isolates.

Methods: Monte Carlo Simulations were performed to simulate the PK/PD indices of the investigated antimicrobials. Population Pharmacokinetic data and Pharmacodynamic indices were integrated into Monte Carlo Simulation routine with 10,000 iterations. Objective—A single Pro-70 to Thr (p.P70T) mutation of amelogenin is known to result in hypomineralized amelogenesis imperfecta (AI). This study aims to test the hypothesis that the given mutation affects the self-assembly of amelogenin molecules and impairs their ability to conduct the growth of apatite crystals.

Design—Recombinant human full-length wild-type (rh174) and p.P70T mutated amelogenins were analyzed using dynamic light scattering (DLS), protein quantification assay and atomic force microscopy (AFM) before and after the binding of amelogenins to hydroxyapatite crystals. The crystal growth modulated by both amelogenins in a dynamic titration system was observed using AFM.

Streptococcus sanguinis is a gram-positive facultative anaerobe that is indigenous to the oral cavity and a primary colonizer of the oral cavity. It serves as a tether for the attachment of several oral bacteria that colonize the tooth surface, form dental plaque, and cause periodontal disease. Previous experiments with streptococcal strains have suggested that cellular chain morphology of streptococci may influence the competitiveness, susceptibility to phagocytosis, acidurance, and aggregation of the bacterium. Involvement has been examined extensively within the consumer behavior literature. However, limited research exists concerning involvement and charitable contributions. Additionally, because of women's growing financial power, college athletic departments are increasingly interested in understanding how to attract greater numbers of female donors. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study was to examine gender differences in donor involvement using Zaichkowsky's (1994) Personal Involvement Inventory (PII). Several demographic characteristics of donors were also compared by gender. A sample of 1,664 donors from three NCAA Division I universities participated in this study.
