Understanding the neurobiological processes that contribute to the establishment and expression of stress-induced regulation of cocaine use in addicted individuals is important for the development of new and better treatment approaches. It has been previously shown that rats self-administering cocaine under long-access conditions (6 h daily) display heightened susceptibility to the reinstatement of extinguished cocaine seeking by a stressor, electric footshock, or i.c.v. administration of the stressor-responsive neuropeptide, corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF). Children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder can experience a wide range of difficulties due to social and communication impairments. These challenges also affect the child’s family and can cause stress and disturbances within the family system. This case report describes an eight-week art therapy experience with a family who has a child with autism. A Projective Imagery Family Evaluation (PIFE) was conducted, followed by a discussion session with the family and then six one-hour art therapy sessions. At Pathways to Housing-Philadelphia, mental health services to support consumers' independent living are delivered through Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams. ACT is an evidence-based mental health intervention known to reduce psychiatric hospitalization and increase housing stability. ACT team members include social workers, substance abuse, counselors, nurses, and psychiatrists, with ideal staff to client ratios of 1 to 10. Through a novel collaboration between the program and the Deparment of Family and Community Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University, a primary-care physician was embedded into the ACT services to form an integrated health-care team.

Conclusion: Our study demonstrates ALDH1 is significantly expressed in dysplatic lesions arising from IBD. ALDH1-expression in cancer stem cells suggest an important causative role in the progression to cancer in IBD. Although we found high sensitivity for dysplasia, the specificity was poor. In addition to neoplasia, ALDH1-expressing stem cells proliferate in response to chronic inflammation, accounting for the cases of inflammatory atypia with positive ALDHI1 expression.

Fused in Sarcoma (FUS) proteinopathy is a feature of frontotemporal lobar dementia (FTLD), and mutation of the fus gene segregates with FTLD and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). To study the consequences of mutation in the fus gene, we created transgenic rats expressing the human fus gene with or without mutation. Overexpression of a mutant (R521C substitution), but not normal, human FUS induced progressive paralysis resembling ALS. Mutant FUS transgenic rats developed progressive paralysis secondary to degeneration of motor axons and displayed a substantial loss of neurons in the cortex and hippocampus. Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) spike (S) glyprotein and membrane (M) glycoprotein genes arebelieved to have genetic variation. The heterogeneity in those genomic sequences has been reported and is knownessentially for the diverse PEDV pathogenicity. Eight southern Vietnamese PEDVs collected from severe waterydiarrhea piglets of the recent emerging outbreaks (2009-2010) were sequenced and analyzed. The results revealedhigh nucleotide homology of the partial S gene of the current isolates at 98.9-100% and 99.7-100% identity of the fullM gene among these isolates despite dividing into two subclusters of different provincial origins. The present study was undertaken to determine the influence of sperm:oocyte ratio at fertilization in vitrousing frozen boar semen on fertilization rates and subsequent embryo development and quality in pig. Cumulusoocytecomplexes (COCs) were collected from porcine ovaries and then matured in vitro. After 44 hours of culture,matured oocytes were fertilized for 6 hours with three different sperm:oocyte ratios (1000:1, 2000:1, and 4000:1).Presumptive zygotes were fixed at 18-20 hours post-fertilization and then examined for sperm penetration andmonospermy rates. Bartonella hensalae is a causative agent of cat scratch disease that has serious zoonotic potential for people.The aim of the present study is to examine seroprevalence of antibodies against B. hensalae in cats and dogs along thenorthern borders of Thailand in Chiangrai, Maehongson and Nan provinces using the indirect fluorescent antibodytest (IFA). A total of 169 serum samples derived from 56 cats and 113 dogs were collected from 3 provinces along thenorthern borders of Thailand. Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) culture in Mexico experiences sporadic and significant fish mortalities, wheredisease signs are associated with infectious pancreatic necrosis virus disease (IPNV). The purpose of the present workwas to support the potential of ELISA, histopathology, and RT-PCR as routine techniques for IPNV detection.Fourteen trout farms were monitored after a disease outbreak. Positive results were confirmed in different collectedorganisms from 21% of tested farms by all 3 techniques. TRAIL is a promising therapeutic agent for human malignancies. TRAIL often requires mitochondrial dysfunction, referred to as the Type II death receptor pathway, to promote cytotoxicity. However, numerous malignant cells are TRAIL resistant due to inhibition of this mitochondrial pathway. Using cholangiocarcinoma cells as a model of TRAIL resistance, we found that Hedgehog signaling blockade sensitized these cancer cells to TRAIL cytotoxicity independent of mitochondrial dysfunction, referred to as Type I death receptor signaling. Tigecycline is a member of the glycylcycline class of antimicrobials, which is structurally similar to the tetracycline class. It demonstrates potent in vitro activity against causative pathogens that are most frequently isolated in patients with community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP), including (but not limited to) Streptococcus pneumoniae (both penicillin-sensitive and -resistant strains), Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis (including β-lactamase-producing strains), Klebsiella pneumoniae, and ‘atypical organisms’ (namely Chlamydophila pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Legionella pneumophila). The Prevalence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 among STD clinics in Miami is not known. The objective of this study was to evaluate infection rates of HSV 1 and 2, and to describe the socio-demographic characteristics, sexual orientation and co-infection with HIV and other STIs, in individuals attending a Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) clinic in Miami. A cross-sectional study of 663 patients tested for HSV type-specific serology or herpes culture during the year 2007 was performed. An overall infection rate of HSV-1 was 42.1% and 36.7% for HSV-2. Research examining juror perceptions of juveniles tried as adults has provided mixed results, with some studies providing evidence of bias against juveniles tried as adults, and others finding no evidence of this bias.  The present research aimed to clarify this issue by examining the roles of generic prejudice and emotion in jurors’ judgments of juveniles tried as adults.  Study 1 assessed which stereotypes people associate with juveniles tried as adults compared to juveniles tried in juvenile court and adults tried in criminal court.  Study 2 examined to what extent angry, fearful, sad, and neutral mock jurors used these stereotypes to …

Fatigue is a common occurrence in cancer patients regardless of tumor type or anti-tumor therapies and is an especially problematic symptom in persons with incurable tumor disease. In rodents, tumor-induced fatigue is associated with a progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and increased expression of biomarkers of muscle protein degradation. The purpose of the present study was to determine if muscle wasting and expression of biomarkers of muscle protein degradation occur in the hearts of tumor-bearing mice, and if these effects of tumor growth are associated with changes in cardiac function.

Acute central nervous system (CNS) injuries such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, autoimmune encephalomyelitis, and ischemic stroke are associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and health care costs worldwide. Preliminary research has shown potential neuroprotection associated with adult tissue derived stem/progenitor cell based therapies. While initial research indicated that engraftment and transdifferentiation into neural cells could explain the observed benefit, the exact mechanism remains controversial. A second hypothesis details localized stem/progenitor cell engraftment with alteration of the loco-regional milieu; however, the limited rate of cell engraftment makes this theory less likely.
