Foreign-Born Nurses In The Us Labor Market, Edward J. Schumacher

This paper examines immigration and the wages of foreign and native nurses in the US labor market. Data from the Current Population Survey identifies a worker’s country of birth and the National Survey of Registered Nurses (NSRN) identifies nurses who received their basic training outside the US. In 2004 about 3.1% of the registered nurse (RN) workforce is foreign-born non-US citizens, and 3.3% received their basic education elsewhere. The principal countries of origin are the Philippines, Canada, India, and England. Regression results show a 4.5% lower wage for non-citizen nurses born outside of the US (Canadian nurses are an exception). …

Social capital refers to trust, norms, and social networks. One of the most important features of social capital is its claimed capacity of promoting economic well-being. Theorists have assumed that any such effects vary according to the nature of different types of social capital. Using longitudinal data from a nationally representative dataset, this study investigates the differentiated effects of individual bonding and bridging social capital on subsequent personal income and income-to-needs ratios. The analyses demonstrate that bridging capital, indicated by involvement in various voluntary organizations, has small but significant effects on future economic wellbeing. Addiction is a chronic relapsing disorder hypothesized to be produced by drug-induced plasticity that renders individuals vulnerable to craving-inducing stimuli such as re-exposure to the drug of abuse. Drug-induced plasticity that may result in the addiction phenotype includes increased excitatory signaling within corticostriatal pathways that correlates with craving in humans and is necessary for reinstatement in rodents. Reduced cystine–glutamate exchange by system x_c– appears to contribute to heightened excitatory signaling within the striatum, thereby posing this as a novel target in the treatment of addiction. BACKGROUND: Robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery (RALS) is evolving as an important surgical approach in the field of colorectal surgery. We aimed to evaluate the learning curve for RALS procedures involving resections of the rectum and rectosigmoid.

METHODS: A series of 50 consecutive RALS procedures were performed between August 2008 and September 2009. Data were entered into a retrospective database and later abstracted for analysis. The surgical procedures included abdominoperineal resection (APR), anterior rectosigmoidectomy (AR), low anterior resection (LAR), and rectopexy (RP). This study was to investigate the virulence and pathogenicity of Thai isolated Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG)inoculated into embryonated eggs and the chance of virulence study in embryonated eggs instead of experimentalchickens. Group 1consisting of 12 eggs served as sham negative control and was inoculated with 0.1 ml of broth into yolk sac. Although new medical treatments have improved AMD's prognosis, vision-related disability remains a major public health problem. A recent study showed that people evaluate products more positively when they are physically associated with art images than similar non-art images. Neuroimaging studies of visual art have investigated artistic style and esthetic preference but not brain responses attributable specifically to the artistic status of images. Here we tested the hypothesis that the artistic status of images engages reward circuitry, using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during viewing of art and non-art images matched for content. To address the need for workplace substance use prevention programming, National Health Promotion Associates (NHPA) developed the LifeSkills Training Wellness Program (LST-WP) with funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) Young Adults in the Workplace (YIW) grant program. In order to understand the change of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in dogs with mammary gland tumor (MGT), theactivity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in plasma samples, MGT tissues and near by normal mammary gland tissues wereevaluated by gelatin zymography. The levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were significantly higher in tumor tissues thanthose in normal gland tissues (p<0.05). Plasma MMP-9 levels in malignant cases were higher than those in benign(p=0.15) and non-tumor cases (p<0.05). Likewise, plasma MMP-2 levels in malignant MGT cases were higher thannon-tumor (p<0.01) and benign cases (p=0.54). Furthermore, plasma MMP-9 levels were reflected and positivelycorrelated with MMP-9 in tumor tissues (r=0.78, p=0.02), but not MMP-2. Our results indicated that the MMP-2 andMMP-9 levels are associated with tumor malignancy, and plasma MMP-9 activity can become a potential marker bothin follow-up and prognosis of canine MGT patients.

The study aims to investigate the efficacy of piroline and antibiotics in the treatment of bovine mastitiscaused by Streptococcus uberis (S. uberis) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) during dry-milk period. 1880 cows in dry-milkperiod were divided into 4 groups and treated with penicillin G, ammonia benzyl penicillin, ceftiofur and piroline,respectively. Testicular tissues were obtained from 8 unilateral cryptorchidism boars.Immunohistochemical staining for ERβ, AR and Ki-67 protein was performed by avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex(ABC) method.
