Voice From The Deep: A Black Student's Journey In A Dance/Movement Therapy Graduate Program, Aqueena H. Smith

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the author’s experience in a dance/movement therapy program through poetry written while in graduate school. The author uses the methodologies of lyric/poetic inquiry, artistic inquiry, and autoethnography to structure this thesis research. The thesis provides affirmation that cultural background and faith affect the perspective of an individual’s experience in graduate school. Data analysis of eighteen poems written by the author revealed themes as the results of this study. The author discusses the meaning and significance of these poems that communicate the graduate experience as a whole.

When Disaster Strikes: A Proposed Model For Child Life Programming In Disaster Relief Settings, Caralyn Perlee May 2011

When Disaster Strikes: A Proposed Model For Child Life Programming In Disaster Relief Settings, Caralyn Perlee

Graduate Student Independent Studies

In the aftermath of a major natural disaster, few are equipped to respond effectively to the unique emotional and psychological needs to children. Child life specialists are specifically trained to help children effectively cope with traumatic situations, though very few child life specialists have engaged in disaster-related work. There exists the need for a medium through which child life specialists can become involved and offer their crucial and unique services. This project offers a rationale for why this medium is necessary and proposes a model for the integration of child life into the pre-existing Red Cross disaster relief model.

Innovative Purification Protocol For Heparin Binding Proteins: Relevance In Biopharmaceutical And Biomedical Applications, Sumit Batra

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Heparin binding (HB) proteins mediates a wide range of important cellular processes, which makes this class of proteins biopharmaceutically important. Engineering HB proteins could bring many advantages, but it necessitates cost effective and efficient purification methodologies compared to the currently available methods. One of the most important classes of heparin binding protein is the fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) and its receptors (FGFRs). In this study, we report an efficient off-column purification of FGF-1 from soluble fractions and purification of the D2 domain of FGFR from insoluble inclusion bodies, using a weak amberlite cation (IRC) exchanger. This approach is an alternative …

Challenges And Opportunities For Developing Countries From Medical Tourism, Avinash M. Waikar, Samuel D. Cappel, Uday S. Tate

Management Faculty Research

Wikipedia defines “Medical Tourism” as the act of traveling to other countries to obtain medical, dental and surgical care. Rapid expansion of facilities for patients abroad has helped to spur this industry’s growth. Regardless of the destination, U.S. citizens are increasingly embracing the benefits of medical tourism due to dramatically rising U.S. healthcare costs. Medical care in countries such as India, Mexico, Thailand and Singapore can cost as little as ten percent of the cost of comparable care in the U.S. for some procedures. Statistical analysis revealed the costs to be significantly lower for many of these countries. Currently, patients …

Novel Model For Multispecies Biofilms That Uses Rigid Gas-Permeable Lenses, Rebecca Peyyala, Sreenatha S. Kirakodu, Jeffrey L. Ebersole, Karen F. Novak

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

Oral biofilms comprise complex multispecies consortia aided by specific inter- and intraspecies interactions occurring among commensals and pathogenic bacterial species. Oral biofilms are primary initiating factors of periodontal disease, although complex multifactorial biological influences, including host cell responses, contribute to the individual outcome of the disease. To provide a system to study initial stages of interaction between oral biofilms and the host cells that contribute to the disease process, we developed a novel in vitro model system to grow biofilms on rigid gas-permeable contact lenses (RGPLs), which enable oxygen to permeate through the lens material. Bacterial species belonging to early- …

Health Status Of Children Entering Kindergarten: Results Of The 2010-2011 (Year Three) Nevada Kindergarten Health Survey, Nevada Institute For Children’S Research And Policy, Amanda Haboush, Tara Phebus, Denise Tanata Ashby, Taylor Oliver, Spencer Hensley, Enrique Lopez

Nevada Institute for Children's Research and Policy Reports

Academic achievement for children is vital to their success in life. Those that do well in school have greater opportunities for post-secondary education, and later have better prospects for employment. One of the major factors that can affect a child’s academic achievement is his or her health status. Academic outcomes and health conditions are consistently linked in the literature (Taras & Potts-Datema, 2005). Children with poor health status, and especially those with common chronic health conditions, have increased numbers of school absences and more academic deficiencies (Taras & Potts-Datema, 2005). In a study concerning excused versus unexcused absences, children with …

Interventions For Families Victimized By Child Sexual Abuse: Clinical Issues And Approaches For Child Advocacy Center-Based Services, Poonam Tavkar, David J. Hansen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Child sexual abuse poses serious mental health risks, not only to child victims but also to non-offending family members. As the impact of child sexual abuse is heterogeneous, varied mental health interventions should be available in order to ensure that effective and individualized treatments are implemented. Treatment modalities for child victims and non-offending family members are identified and described. The benefits of providing on-site mental health services at Child Advocacy Centers to better triage and provide care are discussed through a description of an existing Child Advocacy Center-based treatment program. Recommendations for research and clinical practice are provided.

Standing In The Gap: The Primary Care Physician And Alzheimer’S Disease, Shirley M. Neitch

Internal Medicine

There is a huge volume of information recently published about Alzheimer’s disease, but most of it is not targeted to the average busy primary care physician, even though these PCPs are providing the bulk of care to patients with dementia. Driving Assessment Results In Patients With A Diagnosis Of Dementia, Shirley M. Neitch, Guillermo Madero, Shawn Maynard

Internal Medicine

Primary care physicians are frequently involved in cases in which they must decide if a patient with dementia should stop driving. The decision is complex, and there are no firm clinical guidelines available. We examined the results of a number of patients who have undergone assessment in our Driving Assessment Clinic, to determine if any of our findings correlated with the diagnosis of dementia. If any associations exist, recommendations may be possible to assist PCPs in making the decision to have patients stop driving, even if full formal testing cannot be done.

The creators of our constitution believed that all men are endowed with certain unalienable rights, one of which being the Pursuit of Happiness. Influence Of Peer Mentorship On Nursing Education And Student Attrition, Brittany A. Gisi

HIM 1990-2015

Peer mentoring is the exchange of skills or knowledge from a more experienced individual to a novice in the same field. Due to the constraints placed on nursing education, many students struggle to complete the nursing curriculum. This leads to high attrition rates within colleges of nursing. Without maximizing graduate rates, the current nursing shortage is exacerbated. This integrated literature review examines the impact of more experienced nursing students mentoring their junior peers. With implementation of peer mentoring attrition rates were reduced. Additionally, the research showed that mentees experienced an enhanced feeling of support and were able to learn more …

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this investigation was to examine whether a single 10 minute bout of exercise, performed at multiple intervals throughout the day to equal 30 minutes, can effectively elicit post-exercise hypotension (PEH). Secondly, it is important to explore whether a light (40% VO2R) or moderate (70% VO2R) intensity is required to elicit PEH within 10 minutes. Subjects (N=11) completed a VO2max test utilizing the Bruce Treadmill protocol. Each subject returned within 3 – 5 days to complete two separate exercising trials. A counter balanced system was employed so that each subject did not perform the same intensity rotation (Counter …
