Healthcare practice is increasingly focused on delivering care that is based on published research evidence. Staff development nurses can institute journal clubs to teach nursing staff critical appraisal of research articles and ways to translate research findings into clinical practice. Unfortunately, attending meetings regularly is often a challenge for nurses, and relatively few have the knowledge and expertise to adequately critique research articles. One way to bridge the limitations of accessibility and limited research expertise of journal club members is to establish a virtual journal club. This article describes one hospital's experience with developing a virtual journal club.

The primary purpose of the project, as originally conceived, was to design and implement a series of applied research studies to validate the effectiveness of a blended learning ecology in the teaching of life saving medical skills to US Army combat military personnel. The project has since undergone several changes to include changing the focus to the development of a Program of Instruction (POI) for Combat Lifesaver Skills (CLS). We report a case of typical carcinoid of the lung in a 60-year-old human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive man diagnosed on brush cytology smears. Bronchial carcinoids are rare tumors, accounting for 1% to 2% of all lung tumors. Although the exact incidence in HIV-infected individuals is not known, the paucity of their documentation in the literature indicates that they may be equally rare. Cytological diagnosis on brush smears is rarely documented as the tumor is covered with mucosa and cellular yield is often not good. Acute Arginine Supplementation Fails To Improve Muscle Endurance Or Affect Blood Pressure Responses To Resistance Training, Beau K. Greer, Brett T. Jones

Dietary supplement companies claim that arginine supplements acutely enhance skeletal muscular endurance. The purpose of this study was to determine whether acute arginine a-ketoglutarate supplementation (AAKG) will affect local muscle endurance of the arm and shoulder girdle or the blood pressure (BP) response to anaerobic exercise. Twelve trained college-aged men (22.6 +/- 3.8 years) performed 2 trials of exercise separated by at least 1 week. At 4 hours before, and 30 minutes before exercise, a serving of an AAKG supplement (3,700 mg arginine alpha-ketoglutarate per serving) or placebo was administered. Objectives: To describe perceptions of immigrant Hispanic women experiencing symptoms of postpartum depression (PPD) and to identify barriers to seeking mental health services.

Design: Qualitative descriptive.

Setting: Community health clinic.

Participants: Twenty immigrant Hispanic women scoring positive for symptoms of PPD receiving health care at a community health clinic who declined mental health services participated in audiotaped interviews held in their homes.

Methods: Following Institutional Review Board approval and informed consent, interviews were conducted with study participants. Transcribed data were analyzed as appropriate for qualitative inquiry.

OBJECTIVES: Interleukin-10 (IL-10) downregulates T-cell-mediated immune responses. We studied the association between IL-10 production by freshly isolated melanoma cell suspensions in vitro and overall survival in patients undergoing adjuvant treatment with a vaccine prepared from the same autologous melanoma cells modified with a hapten, dinitrophenyl (DNP).

METHODS: Forty-four patients with cutaneous melanoma (29 stage III and 15 stage IV) were prospectively evaluated. Tumor cells were extracted from metastatic deposits for production of DNP-modified autologous melanoma cell vaccine. OBJECTIVES: To compare the chromogenic UTI medium (CUM) with cysteine lactose electrolyte deficient medium (CLED) in terms of isolation of uropathogens, turnaround time and cost.

METHODS: A total of 251 urine samples were selected and inoculated on both CLED and CUM, growth was observed after 24 and 48 hours of incubation. Isolates were identified by colony's colour and biochemical tests. Turnaround time for identification and cost was calculated till final identification of microorganisms.

RESULTS: A discrepancy in isolation was observed in seven samples with growth on CUM in 24 hours while in 48 hours on CLED. There was 100% agreement …

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST) is a very rare entity in head and neck with high rate of recurrences and local invasiveness. This tumour is usually found in lower extremities and only 10-12% occur in head and neck region. The diagnosis is considered as the most elusive and difficult among soft tissue sarcomas because of its non specific presentation, both clinically as well as pathologically. This difficulty has now been overcome by immunohistochemistry. We report here a case of MPNST in a 50 years old male with a localized right maxillary growth.

This study was conducted from 2004 to 2009 to investigate the prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes in thechicken production chain in Thailand from primary production stages to processing plants. A total of 14,670 sampleswere taken from 43 breeder farms, 32 hatcheries, 1331 broiler farms, 22 slaughterhouses and 22 ready-to-eat (RTE)chicken products from processing plants. Current demographic information on the number and types of removable partial dentures is lacking in the prosthodontic literature.

Purpose

This study was designed to investigate patterns of tooth loss in patients receiving removable partial dentures (RPDs) in eastern Wisconsin.

Material and Methods

Digital images (1502) of casts at 5 dental laboratories in eastern Wisconsin were collected. Any prescription requesting fabrication of a removable partial denture was photographed twice. Farmers in the U.S. are becoming more diverse; the average age of the farmer is increasing, as is the number of women and minority farm operators. There is limited research on injury risk factors in these special populations of farmers. It is especially important to study the risk factors for injury in these growing and at-risk groups. A longitudinal survey was conducted of farmers (n = 1,394) age 50 and older who resided in Kentucky and South Carolina. For this reason, the identification of medications that prevent drug relapse is a critical goal of drug abuse research. The objectives of this study were to establishmouse parthenogenetic ES (pES) cell lines from parthenogenetically-derived blastocysts as a model system for humanand animal research and to examine pluripotency differences among the pES cell lines. The study is of the antinociceptive effects of tramadol on the thermal threshold response in eight cats using athermal threshold-testing device which contained a heater element and a temperature sensor placed on the shavedlateral thoracic area. Each cat randomly received an intramuscular administration of tramadol 2 mg/kg, morphine 0.2mg/kg and saline 0.04 ml/kg (placebo) at a weekly interval from an observer unaware of the treatment. Sixteen sequences of piRNAs were cloned fromthree different species by the method of construction of cDNA library including two sequences from mouse, eightsequences from quail and six sequences from chicken. Herein, the two piRNAs sequences from mouse had alreadybeen identified, while the others were cloned for the first time. Recently, we reported the preferential infection of a novel glial cell type from adult canine brain, termedSchwann cell-like brain glia (SCBG) with canine distemper virus (CDV). To further characterize virus-cell and cell-cellinteractions, SCBG in purified and mixed brain cell cultures was infected with different CDV strains. Cell cultureswere infected with the attenuated CDV-Ond, CDV-2544, CDV-OndeGFP, CDV-R252 and the mustelid virulent CDV-5804PeGFP strain. Cytopathic effects (CPEs) and the percentage of infection were monitored daily at 3 and 10 dayspost-infection (dpi), respectively. Anticoagulant rodenticide, especially coumarin derivative, is the most common cause of companion animalintoxication. Retrospective pathological examination was performed on 10 dogs suspected to be intoxicated withanticoagulant rodenticides. Coumarin derivatives, cause of intoxication, were confirmed by toxicologicalidentification using thin layer chromatography technique and spectral analysis. Macroscopically and microscopically,all cases showed generalized hemorrhages in various organs. Microscopic examination of hemorrhagic scores of liver,kidneys, intestines, heart, and lungs were 2.28+1.94, 2±2, 1±1.63, 0.8±1.68, and 1.1+2.32, respectively. Highesthemorrhagic score of the liver indicated that it suffered the most hemorrhagic effects related to anticoagulantrodenticides.
