In 1959, William Russell and Rex Burch published the seminal book, The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique, which emphasized reduction, refinement, and replacement of animal use, principles which have since been referred to as the ‘‘3 Rs’’. These principles encouraged researchers to work to reduce the number of animals used in experiments to the minimum considered necessary, refine or limit the pain and distress to which animals are exposed, and replace the use of animals with non-animal alternatives when possible. The history of obstetrical forceps has almost always been one cloaked in controversy after a long history of being shrouded in mystery. Forceps have a long history and have evolved from facilitating the delivery of dead fetuses to aiding in the delivery and survival of live babies. In the middle of all of this arises the story of the Chamberlain family whose contribution was enormous but whose behaviors pushed at the envelope of (at least) our present-day concepts of medical ethics. This lecture traces an interesting story that spans a millennium.

Pivotal components of the IFN response to virus infection include the IFN receptors (IFNR), and the downstream factorsignal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (Stat1). Mice deficient for Stat1 and IFNR (Stat12/2 and IFNaßcR2/2 mice) lack responsiveness to IFN and exhibit high sensitivity to various pathogens. Here we examined herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) pathogenesis in Stat12/2 mice and in IFNaßcR2/2 mice following corneal infection and bioluminescent imaging. Two divergent and paradoxical patterns of infection were observed. The dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) has become an important model for studying many aspects of visual system development. To date, studies have focused on the development of retinal projections and the role of activity in shaping the pattern of synaptic connections made with thalamocortical relay cells. By contrast, little is known about relay cells and the factors that regulate the growth and establishment of their dendritic architecture. Background:

Compare changes in types of hospital service revenues between traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospitals and Western-medicine based general hospitals.

Methods:

97 TCM hospitals and 103 general hospitals were surveyed in years of 2000 and 2004. Six types of medical service revenue between the two types of hospitals were compared overtime. The national statistics from 1999 to 2008 were also used as complementary evidence.

Results:

For TCM hospitals, the percentage of service revenue from Western medicine increased from 44.3% to 47.4% while the percentage of service revenue from TCM declined from 26.4% to 18.8% from 1999 to 2004. Percentages of …

Purpose: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of a financial incentive on weight loss and diabetes risk score (DRS) following a tailored National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) weight loss intervention among adults who are overweight/obese and who are at risk for type 2 diabetes. High intensity (≥75%1RM), short rest (≤30 seconds) workouts (HISR) have increased in popularity in recent years despite very little scientific study as well as contradicting the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) position stand. The purpose of this study was to assess the changes in movement associated with the fatigue resulting from a HISR workout. 14 males underwent a 3 dimensional analysis of 5 bodyweight squats before and after a HISR workout. Calcium needs increase as a child grows. Actual intake often decreases as a child gets older, leaving his/her developing bones at risk for injury during childhood and increasing the risk of developing osteoporosis later in life. The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between psychosocial factors influencing consumption of calcium and vitamin D-rich foods and actual intakes of these nutrients. Background: The three sub-species of Trypanosoma brucei are important pathogens of sub-Saharan Africa. T. b. brucei is unable to infect humans due to sensitivity to trypanosome lytic factors (TLF) 1 and 2 found in human serum. T. b. rhodesiense and T. b. gambiense are able to resist lysis by TLF. There are two distinct sub-groups of T. b. gambiense that differ genetically and by human serum resistance phenotypes. Group 1 T. b. gambiense have an invariant phenotype whereas group 2 show variable resistance. Previous data indicated that group 1 T. b. gambiense are resistant to TLF-1 due in-part to reduced …

BACKGROUND: The current study was undertaken to determine the degree of activation of gallbladder mucosal mast cells, whether mast cell (MC) density or activation differ between patients with and without a positive clinical response to cholecystectomy, and whether either density or activation correlate with gallbladder emptying.

RESULTS: Fifteen biliary dyskinesia (BD) and 13 symptomatic cholelithiasis (CL) patients undergoing cholecystectomy were prospectively enrolled. Gallbladder wall MC density (by immunohistochemistry) and activation (by electron microscopy) were determined. Clinical response was evaluated 30 days post-cholecystectomy on a 5-point Likert-type scale. A complete or nearly complete clinical response was seen in 100% of CL …

n this multicenter, prospective study of 288 children (half under 2 years of age) undergoing cardiac surgery, we evaluated whether the measurement of pre- and postoperative serum cystatin C (CysC) improves the prediction of acute kidney injury (AKI) over that obtained by serum creatinine (SCr). Higher preoperative SCr-based estimated glomerular filtration rates predicted higher risk of the postoperative primary outcomes of stage 1 and 2 AKI (adjusted odds ratios (ORs) 1.5 and 1.9, respectively). Regulated movements of the nucleus are essential during zygote formation, cell migrations, and differentiation of neurons. The nucleus moves along microtubules (MTs) and is repositioned on F-actin at the cellular cortex. Two families of nuclear envelope proteins, SUN and KASH, link the nucleus to the actin and MT cytoskeletons during nuclear movements. However, the role of actin nucleators in nuclear migration and positioning is poorly understood. We show that the branched actin nucleator, Arp2/3, affects nuclear movements throughout embryonic and larval development in C. elegans, including nuclear migrations in epidermal cells and neuronal precursors. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes are important targets for vaccines against a wide variety of infections that enter the body via mucosal tissues. To induce effective immunity these vaccines must include the most protective epitopes and elicit rapid recall responses at the site of infection. Although live attenuated viruses are sometimes used to induce cellular immunity against recurrent influenza infections, the mechanisms that determine the magnitude of the response to individual viral components are very poorly defined. Foxp3 is responsible for the major immunological features of Treg cells, including hypoproliferation in vitro, immune suppression of conventional T cells and resistance to Th2 cell differentiation. In addition to the Forkhead domain, the Foxp3 protein contains the N-terminal, zinc finger and leucine zipper domains. To understand how these domains contribute to Foxp3 functions, we systematically compared the roles of these domains in determining the 3 major immunological features of Treg cells. This article highlights the expanding burden of osteoporosis in West Virginia. WV ranks second nationally in the percentage of its population that is ≥ 65 years of age. Our older population increases the risk of osteoporosis and fracture; the most recent data indicates that 77% of our women age 50 and older have osteoporosis or low bone mass. The lifetime risk of osteoporotic related fracture is alarming and occurs in 50% of females and 25% of males age 50 and older. The article describes a teaching technique that improves the clinical decision-making skills and emergency care skills of athletic training (AT) students. A scenario or simulation of a rescue work involving an AT student and a mock patient is provided. It cites experience, knowledge of the student and educational needs as key factors to consider in designing scenarios. Information on the debriefing aspect of the technique is also given, along with the challenges posed by this technique.

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิผลการแปรงฟันหลังการให้ทันตสุขศึกษาโดยการสอนของนักศึกษา ทันตแพทย์ และการใช้สื่อโสตทัศน์ในนักเรียนชั้นประถมศึกษา วัสดุและวิธีการ เด็กนักเรียนจํานวน 160 คน อายุ 10-12 ปี โรงเรียนสาธิตมหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น จังหวัดขอนแก่น โดยสุ่มแบบแบ่งชั้น ตามเพศ ระดับชั้นเรียน และผลการเรียนเฉลี่ย แบ่งเป็น 3 กลุ่ม คือ กลุ่มที่ไม่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษา กลุ่มที่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษาโดยนักศึกษาทันตแพทย์ และกลุ่มที่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษาโดยสื่อโสตทัศน์ การประเมิน ประสิทธิผลการแปรงฟันโดยทดสอบความรู้และวัดค่าดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์ก่อนและหลังให้ทันตสุขศึกษา โดยวิเคราะห์ค่าเฉลี่ยผลต่างคะแนนความรู้และค่าเฉลี่ยผลต่างดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์ก่อนและหลังได้รับทันตสุขศึกษา ในกลุ่มศึกษาทั้ง 3 กลุ่ม ด้วยสถิติทดสอบการวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนทางเดียวที่ระดับความเชื่อมั่นร้อยละ 95 ผลการศึกษา ภายหลังการให้ทันตสุขศึกษาพบว่าค่าเฉลี่ยผลต่างคะแนนความรู้และค่าเฉลี่ยผลต่างดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์ก่อนและหลังได้รับทันตสุขศึกษาในกลุ่มศึกษาทั้ง 3 กลุ่ม มีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p < 0.01, p < 0.01 ตามลําดับ) โดยพบว่ากลุ่มที่ไม่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษามีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ กับกลุ่มที่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษา และพบว่าในระหว่างกลุ่มที่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษาโดยนักศึกษาทันตแพทย์ และโดยสื่อโสตทัศน์ไม่มีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ สรุป การเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิผลการแปรงฟันหลังการให้ทันตสุขศึกษาโดยนักศึกษาทันตแพทย์ และโดยสื่อโสตทัศน์ในนักเรียนประถมศึกษาพบว่าไม่มีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติทั้งในด้านความรู้และค่าดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์ ดังนั้นอาจจะนําเอาสื่อโสตทัศน์ไปประยุกต์ใช้ในการให้ทันตสุขศึกษาแทนทันตบุคลากรได้ (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2554;34:187-92)

วัตถุประสงค์ นําเสนอและประเมินผลการทํางานของซอฟต์แวร์คอมพิวเตอร์ที่พัฒนาขึ้นเพื่อใช้ตกแต่งภาพฟัน และทํานายผลที่จะได้รับจากการบูรณะฟันโดยใช้การคํานวณหาขนาดและสัดส่วนของฟันหน้าบนจากจุดอ้างอิงทางกายวิภาคบนใบหน้าของผู้ป่วยเอง วัสดุและวิธีการ ประยุกต์ทฤษฎีที่ใช้ในการคํานวณขนาดฟันตัดกลางบน และทฤษฎีที่ใช้ในการแบ่งส่วนภาพฟันเพื่อใช้ในการแก้ไขปรับปรุงรูปดิจิทัลของฟัน มาเป็นหลักในการเขียนซอฟต์แวร์ในงานทันตกรรม จากนั้นได้ ทดลองใช้งานและประเมินผลในผู้ป่วยกลุ่มหนึ่ง ผลการศึกษา ซอฟต์แวร์สามารถคํานวณขนาดและสัดส่วนของฟันหน้าบนโดยใช้ข้อมูลจากจุดอ้างอิงบนใบหน้าได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพและสามารถสร้างภาพฟันให้มีขนาดและสัดส่วนตามที่คํานวณได้ อีกทั้งยังสามารถทําการ เปลี่ยนแปลงขนาดและสัดส่วนของภาพฟัน รวมทั้งตัดและเคลื่อนที่ภาพฟันจากตําแหน่งเดิมได้ หลังการตกแต่งภาพที่ได้สูญเสียความคมชัดและจําเป็นต้องมีการปรับปรุงคุณภาพของภาพให้ดีขึ้นด้วยกรรมวิธีการประมวลผลภาพ เมื่อทดลองใช้กับกลุ่มตัวอย่างพบว่าซอฟต์แวร์นี้สามารถช่วยในการสื่อสารระหว่างผู้ป่วยและทันตแพทย์ได้ดีขึ้น สรุป ซอฟต์แวร์ที่พัฒนาขึ้นสามารถใช้ในการคํานวณขนาดซี่ฟัน ตกแต่งและปรับปรุงคุณภาพ ภาพจําลองฟันซึ่งมีประโยชน์อย่างมากในการช่วยทันตแพทย์วางแผนการรักษาทางทันตกรรมและช่วยให้เห็นภาพจริงสําหรับใช้ในการสื่อสารกับผู้ป่วยก่อนการรักษาจริง (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2554;34:155-68)

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิผลของการใช้แปรงสีฟันไฟฟ้ากับแปรงสีฟันธรรมดาในการลดการเกิด เหงือกอักเสบและกําจัดคราบจุลินทรีย์ในช่วงระยะเวลา 3 เดือน วัสดุและวิธีการ ทําการศึกษาเปรียบเทียบกลุ่มควบคุมแบบสุ่มในเด็กนักเรียนประถมศึกษา อายุระหว่าง 7-10 ปี จํานวน 70 คน แบ่งเด็กออกเป็น 2 กลุ่ม คือ กลุ่มทดลองและกลุ่มควบคุม กลุ่มละเท่า ๆ กัน โดยการสุ่มแบบแบ่ง ชั้นตามระดับชั้นเรียนและเพศ กําหนดให้เด็กในกลุ่มทดลองใช้แปรงสีฟันไฟฟ้าชนิดการเคลื่อนที่แบบสั่นและหมุน และกลุ่มควบคุมใช้แปรงสีฟันธรรมดา วัดดัชนีเหงือกอักเสบของ Lie และ Silness และดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์พีเอชพี ของ Podshadley และ Haley ที่เริ่มต้นศึกษาและวัดซ้ําทุกเดือนเป็นระยะเวลา 3 เดือน ทดสอบความแตกต่าง ของค่าเฉลี่ยระหว่างกลุ่มทดลองและกลุ่มควบคุม โดยใช้สถิติการวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนเมื่อมีการวัดที่ระดับนัยสําคัญ 0.05 ผลการศึกษา เมื่อเวลา 3 เดือนพบว่า ค่าเฉลี่ยการลดลงของดัชนีเหงือกอักเสบจากค่าพื้นฐานระหว่างกลุ่ม ทดลองกับกลุ่มควบคุมไม่มีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p = 0.19) สําหรับค่าเฉลี่ยการลดลงของดัชนี คราบจุลินทรีย์จากค่าพื้นฐานระหว่างกลุ่มทดลองกับกลุ่มควบคุมพบว่า ไม่มีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสําคัญ ทางสถิติ (p = 0.73) เช่นเดียวกัน สรุป ประสิทธิผลในการลดการเกิดเหงือกอักเสบและกําจัดคราบจุลินทรีย์ของการใช้แปรงสีฟันไฟฟ้าไม่แตกต่างจากแปรงสีฟันธรรมดาที่ช่วงเวลา 3 เดือน (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2554;34:193-202)

ผลของเครื่องดื่มชาเขียวและชาขาวต่อการติดสีของเรซินคอมโพสิต, สายใจ ตัณฑนุช, บุญเลิศ กู้เกียรติตระกูล, พิมพ์มาดา เกษรักษ์

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาผลของเครื่องดื่มชาเขียวและชาขาวต่อการติดสีของเรซินคอมโพสิตชนิด นาโนฟิลล์ไฮบริด และไมโครฟิลล์ วัสดุและวิธีการ เตรียมชิ้นตัวอย่างเรซินคอมโพสิตผลิตภัณฑ์ละ 26 ชิ้น ได้แก่ ฟิลเทคแซด 350 และ พรีมีซา ซึ่ง เป็นกลุ่มนาโนฟิลล์ ฟิลเทคแซด 250 และพอยต์ 4 เป็นกลุ่มไฮบริด เคลียร์ฟิลเอสทีและดูราฟิล วีเอสเป็นกลุ่มไมโครฟิลล์ นําชิ้นตัวอย่าง 20 ชิ้นวัดสีด้วยเครื่องวัดค่าสีเพื่อเป็นข้อมูลก่อนการทดสอบ และนําชิ้นตัวอย่างเรซินคอมโพสิตกลุ่มละ 2 ชิ้นตรวจสภาพผิวก่อนทดสอบด้วยกล้องจุลทรรศน์อิเล็กตรอนชนิดสองกราด จากนั้นแช่ชิ้นตัวอย่างที่เหลือ ทั้งหมดจํานวน 24 ชิ้นในเครื่องดื่มชา 5 วินาที สลับกับแช่น้ําลายเทียม 5 วินาที จนครบ 10 รอบ แล้วแช่ชิ้น ตัวอย่างในน้ําลายเทียมจนครบ 24 ชั่วโมง ทําซ้ําใหม่ในลักษณะเดิมจนครบ 5 รอบ วัดสีชิ้นตัวอย่าง 20 ชิ้นที่เคย วัดสีก่อนการแช่และตรวจสภาพผิวหลังทดสอบชิ้นตัวอย่างกลุ่มละ 2 ชิ้น วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลด้วยสถิติการทดสอบ ความแปรปรวนสองทางแบบวัดซ้ําและเปรียบเทียบความแตกต่างระหว่างกลุ่มด้วยการทดสอบทูคีย์และการทดสอบแพร่ทีที่ระดับนัยสําคัญ 0.05 ผลการศึกษา เครื่องดื่มชาเขียวและชาขาวทําให้การติดสีของวัสดุเรซินคอมโพสิตเพิ่มขึ้นแต่ไม่มีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p > 0.05) ยกเว้นเรซินคอมโพสิตฟิลเทคแซด 350 เมื่อแช่ในเครื่องดื่มชาเขียวและดูราฟิลวีเอสเมื่อแช่ในเครื่อง ดื่มชาเขียวและชาขาวที่มีการติดสีเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p < 0.05) สรุป เครื่องดื่มชาเขียวและชาขาวทําให้วัสดุเรซินคอมโพสิตติดสีเพิ่มขึ้น (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2554;34:169-80)

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อทดสอบผลของสารห้ามเลือดเฉพาะที่ต้นแบบ (ทันตะ-จุฬา 100) ต่อคุณสมบัติทางกายภาพ และคุณสมบัติทางกลบางประการของวัสดุอุดฟันเรซินคอมโพสิตชนิดแข็งตัวด้วยแสง วัสดุและวิธีการ วัสดุอุดฟันเรซินคอมโพสิตชนิดแข็งตัวด้วยแสง 5 ผลิตภัณฑ์ ได้แก่ เอสเทไลท์ซิกมาฟิลเทก แซด 250 ฟิลเทก แซด 350 พรีไมส์ และ เททริก เอ็น ซีแรม นํามาเตรียมชิ้นงานตามมาตรฐานไอเอสโอ 4049 (2009) และทาด้วยสารห้ามเลือดเฉพาะที่ต้นแบบ ปริมาตร 100 ไมโครลิตร เป็นเวลา 2 นาที จากนั้นฉายแสงเพื่อให้เกิด ปฏิกิริยาเคมีอย่างสมบูรณ์ และนํามาทดสอบการละลาย การดูดซึมน้ํา ความลึกในการบ่ม และความต้านแรงดัด โค้ง เปรียบเทียบกับกลุ่มควบคุมที่ไม่ได้ทาสารห้ามเลือดเฉพาะที่ ข้อมูลที่ได้จะแสดงในรูปค่าเฉลี่ย + ค่าเบี่ยงแบน มาตรฐาน ใช้โปรแกรมสถิติเอสพีเอสเอสเพื่อวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนแบบสองทางและเปรียบเทียบระหว่างกลุ่ม ด้วยเทอร์คีย์ เอชเอสดี ที่ระดับความเชื่อมั่นร้อยละ 95 ผลการศึกษา สารห้ามเลือดเฉพาะที่ต้นแบบไม่มีผลต่อการละลายและการดูดซึมน้ําของวัสดุอุดฟันเรซินคอมโพสิตทั้งห้าผลิตภัณฑ์อย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p > 0.05) สารห้ามเลือดเฉพาะที่ต้นแบบมีผลเพิ่มค่าความลึกในการ บ่มของวัสดุเอสเทไลท์ซิกมาและฟิลเทก แซด 250 และความต้านแรงดัดโค้งของวัสดุฟิลเทก แซด 250 และเททริก เอ็น ซีแรม อย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p < 0.05) โดยคุณสมบัติการละลาย การดูดซึมน้ํา ความลึกในการบ่ม และ ความต้านแรงดัดโค้งของวัสดุอุดฟันเรซินคอมโพสิตทั้งห้าผลิตภัณฑ์ ภายหลังการทาด้วยสารห้ามเลือดเฉพาะที่ ผ่านตามเกณฑ์มาตรฐานไอเอสโอ 4049 (2009) สรุป สารห้ามเลือดเฉพาะที่ต้นแบบไม่มีผลต่อคุณสมบัติทางกายภาพและทางกลของวัสดุอุดฟันเรซินคอมโพสิต เอสเทไลท์ ฟิลเทก แซด 250 ฟิลเทก แซด 350 พรีไมส์ และ เททริก เอ็น ซีแรม ในด้านการละลาย การดูดซึมน้ํา ความลึกในการบ่ม และความต้านแรงดัดโค้ง ตามมาตรฐานไอเอสโอ 4049 (2009) (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2554;34:213-22)
