Allele frequencies for nine short tandem repeats (STRs) gene loci (CSF1PO, TPOX,TH01, F13A01, FESFPS, vWA, D16S539, D7S820, D13S317) were obtained from analyses of saliva DNA from 109 unrelated healthy Sikh individuals residing in Malaysia. DNA was extracted using phenol/chloroform/isoamly alcohol method. 2ng of DNA for each sample was amplified following the instruction in GenePrint® STR Systems (Promega Corporation) CTT, FFv and SilverSTR III Multiplex kits. The aim of this study is to determine the cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of erythrocarpine E (CEB4), a new limonoid extracted from Chisocheton erythrocarpus. MTT assay, Live/Dead® Viability/Cytotoxicity assay, cell cycle analysis, annexin V analysis, PARP cleavage analysis, DNA fragmentation assay, sandwich ELISA assay and Western blot analysis were performed on five CEB4 treated cancer cell lines; HSC4COX2- and HSC2 (oral), CaSki (cervical), HepG2 (liver), MCF7 (breast) and NHBE (normal human bronchial epithelial cell line). This project initially investigated the bacterial diversity within the oral cavity of Malaysian subjects by using culture-dependent techniques and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The second part of the research profiled the antibiotic resistance of the identified oral bacteria by the Etest method. Three sampling sites of the oral cavity from nine healthy subjects were analyzed: the tooth surface, gingival crevice, and dorsum of the tongue. The American Pain Foundation reported in 2006 that 32% of military men and women with chronic pain reported that military culture is a barrier to pain care and receiving pain care jeopardized their career. Pain management required a series of understandings about pain in the military that motivated enlisted women's pain perceptions, pain behaviors, and pain relief strategies. We investigate the in-hospital transmission dynamics of two methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) strains: hospital-acquired methicillin resistant S. aureus (HA-MRSA) and community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus (CA-MRSA). Under the assumption that patients can only be colonized with one strain of MRSA at a time, global results show that competitive exclusion occurs between HA-MRSA and CA-MRSA strains; the strain with the larger basic reproduction ratio will become endemic while the other is extinguished due to competition. Objective—Characterize the process of family vegetable selection (especially cruciferous, deep orange, and dark green leafy vegetables); demonstrate the usefulness of Exchange Theory (how family norms and past experiences interact with rewards and costs) for interpreting the data.

Design—Eight focus groups, two with each segment (men/women vegetable-likers/dislikers based on a screening form). Participants completed a vegetable intake form.

Setting—Rural Appalachian Pennsylvania.

Participants—61 low-income, married/cohabiting men (n=28) and women (n=33).

Analysis—Thematic analysis within Exchange Theory framework for qualitative data. Descriptive analysis, t-tests and chi-square tests for quantitative data.

Gallinarum using immunohistochemical, bacteriological, and histological procedures. The study included 90 white turkey poults that were divided into 3 groups (1-day-old, 3-week-old, and 2-month-old), each of which was orally inoculated with an inoculum of 0.3 mL of S. Sixteen crossbred barrows (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire) weaned at 28 days with an initial body weight of 5.12-8.64 kg and no antibodies to PCV2 were used in a 5-week trial to evaluate the immune response after intranasal inoculation with type-2 porcine circovirus. The percentage of peripheral blood ANAE+ T cells, PCV2 antibody titer, immunoglobulins, and serum IFN-\gamma, IL-2, and sIL-2R levels were determined. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of Salmonella in a population of house sparrows, which are commonly found around poultry houses, and to characterize the obtained Salmonella isolates via serotyping, multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and antibiotic resistance analysis. Samples of visceral organs (gastrointestinal tract, liver, and heart) from 470 house sparrows were subjected to culture and the results show that 18 (3.8%) were positive for Salmonella. The performance of a high-density continuous system was evaluated as an alternative to conventional low-density batch-culture systems for culturing the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. Rotifer densities ranging from 1700 to 3760 individuals/mL were achieved in 4 different trials that lasted 10-18 days. Problems associated with NH_3-N and pH were controlled by increasing the water exchange rate and periodic addition of ammonia remover. While NH_3-N and pH values were 0-8.8 mg/L and 6.9-9.3, respectively, the most important problem was the accumulation of TSS at concentrations of up to 85 mL/L within a very short time after start-up. Conception Rates For Standing Estrus And Fixed-Time Insemination In Dairy Heifers Synchronized With Gnrh And Pgf_{2\Alpha}, Samir Z. El-Zarkouny

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of GnRH PGF-based protocols on reproductive outcome in Holstein heifers. Heifers were randomly assigned to the control group (n = 14), or treatment groups (n = 50) treated with GnRH (day -7) and PGF_{2\alpha} (day 0). Heifers that exhibited estrus were inseminated (Select Synch, n = 34) and heifers that did not exhibit estrus up to 48 h after PGF_{2\alpha} injection received a second GnRH injection and were fixed-time inseminated (Ovsynch, n = 16). Conception rates were 40%, 55.9%, and 31.3%, and overall pregnancy rates (P < 0.05) were 64.3%, 97%, and 87.5% in the control, Select Synch, and Ovsynch groups, respectively. Ovsynch heifers had 1.8 ± 0.5 and 3.2 ± 0.6 ng mL^{–1} of serum P4, versus 3.3 ± 0.5 and 3.8 ± 0.6 ng mL–1 in the Select Synch heifers at the time of the first GnRH and PGF_{2\alpha} injection, respectively. Conception rates were 55.6% and 58.3% when P4 concentrations were high, and were 50% and 25% when P4 concentrations were low at the time of the first GnRH and PGF_{2\alpha} injection, respectively. Dairy heifers synchronized with GnRH and PGF_{2\alpha} should be inseminated when estrus is observed, and heifers that do not exhibit estrus up to 48 h after PGF_{2\alpha} injection should be given a second GnRH injection and fixed-time inseminated 16-20 h later.

The effectiveness of pre-evisceration, skin-on carcass sanitation on reducing bacterial contamination of beef carcasses was tested using 3 cattle per treatment and 3 cattle as controls at each of 3 abattoirs in southern Wisconsin. The sanitation procedure included stunning, bleeding, tying off the esophagus, sealing the anus, and then sanitizing the hide with: i) 20% trisodium phosphate, ii) 200 ppm iodophor, iii) 75% ethanol, or iv) hot water (ca. 80 °C).
