Most of my research at Yale University School of Medicine over the past several years has focused on identifying older adults at risk of functional decline and disability, identifying events that may precipitate the transition from functional independence to disability, and developing strategies to postpone or reduce frailty and disability. As a result of the Precipitating Events Project (PEP) and other research conducted by the Yale Center on Aging/Pepper Center, we now realize that age is only a proxy for other factors that lead to disability, and that some of these factors can be modified to reduce the risk of …

Drug Release And Pharmacokinetic Properties Of Liposomal Db-67, Yali Liang

Sterically stabilized liposomes with saturated lipid as the major lipid component (DSPC:m-PEGDSPE were applied in DB-67 delivery. The drug retention in vitro and pharmacokinetic properties in vivo were investigated. Liposomal DB-67 was cleared faster from the circulation in the larger liposomes (~180 nm) than in the smaller ones (~120 nm), even though DB-67 was retained longer in smaller size liposomes in vitro. Liposomal DB-67 clearance was increased when cholesterol was present in the liposomal composition (40 mole %). It can be attributable to the faster drug release from cholesterol containing liposomes as compared to liposomes without cholesterol. Cholesterol free …

Heart Transplant Rehabilitation: An Occupational Therapy Program, Amos Hartsell, Kirsten Slominski

Purpose: The purpose of this scholarly project was to develop a comprehensive rehabilitation program following the acute inpatient stay after heart transplantation. This project can be applied in community based and in home rehabilitation settings.

Methods: A literature review was conducted using the SCOPUS and Pub Med databases. Information was gathered regarding rehabilitation of cardiac transplant recipients, problems facing recipients, occupations/activities, and occupational therapist roles. In addition information was gathered from medical facility web sites regarding existing cardiac rehabilitation programs.

Results: Designed from the perspective of the Occupation Adaptation Model, a rehabilitation home program was developed for heart transplant recipients. …

Earnings Of Nurses In Non-Nursing Occupations: Evidence Of Significant Nursing Dissatisfaction?, Stephen D. Rubb

In examining the nursing shortage, many scholars note the high correlation between job dissatisfaction and "intentions" to leave. This study compares the earnings of individuals with nurse training in non-nursing occupations to those in nursing occupations. Nurses exiting the occupation while remaining employed appear to occur if alternative occupations pay a premium. This premium is higher for males and increases with education. Earnings of nurses in non-nursing occupations do not provide evidence of significant nursing dissatisfaction.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Linear probability estimation and survey data are employed to quantify the influence of the lifestyles of individuals on the change in their body mass index (BMI). The analysis also explores the effects of demographic characteristics (age, gender, and ethnicity) in weight management. Results suggest evidence of association between changes in lifestyle and changes in the BMI of individuals.

The current study examined the perceived communication and collaboration patterns among staff at an autism treatment center in Texas. Specifically, we believe that communication technologies provide a pivotal role in effective collaboration among direct service providers. Through the study's participant's open-ended responses, researchers identified and described potential issues of concern around communication and collaboration patterns. Implications and recommendations for practice are included.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of simulation in preparing senior nursing students for their first home visit and to determine comfort and confidence levels of these students as they prepare for their first home visits. This exploratory study used a convenience sample of public health nursing students (n= 115). A pretest posttest design evaluated the effectiveness of the simulation using a 5-point Likert scale to detect changes in student confidence. Significant differences were noted on the majority of mean scores (p <.001) post-simulation. This approach could also be used to prepare newly hired home …

The main purpose of this capstone project is to provide an objective analysis of the cost of a medication error in the emergency department. The secondary objective of this analysis is to estimate the cost avoidance impact of providing clinical pharmacy services in the emergency department (ED).

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves the intravenous administration of a photosensitiser that preferentially localises in cancerous tissues more than the surrounding normal tissues. Subsequent illumination of photosensitiser generates reactive oxygen species that cause irreversible photo-damage to the cancer cells. To date, most photosensitisers that have been approved for clinical use or are currently in clinical trials are cyclic tetrapyrroles which are derived or inspired by naturally occurring chlorophyll and its degradation products. Some non-tetrapyrrolic photosensitisers have also been found in nature suggesting that there are potential photosensitisers with interesting structures in nature. Dengue is a serious infectious disease that is endemic in over 100 countries. There has been an estimate of 50 million infection per year globally, with more than 2.5 billion people are at risk for epidemic transmission. Two principal illnesses associated with dengue are Dengue Fever (DF) and Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF). To date, there is no licensed vaccine or therapeutic drug available for these illnesses, although there have been reports of some vaccine candidates in clinical trials. CD34+ has been used as a marker of hematopoietic stem cells to determine the optimal timing for PBSC harvesting. A slightly branched urethane acrylate macromer (UAM) was synthesized by reacting palm oil-based polyol with excess amounts of polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) to form urethane prepolymer, then reacted with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed the urethane and grafted acrylate groups. 0.2% by weight of camphoroquinone (CQ) and 0.8% by weight of ethyl-4-N,N-dimethylamino-benzoate (4EDMAB) by weight were added to render the experimental resins light-curable. Their viscosity, percentage of degree of conversion (%DC) and cross-linking density (CLD), percentage of volumetric polymerization shrinkage (%VPS), water sorption and solubility, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity and toughness were determined and compared to …
