Efficacy Of The Speech Intelligibility Index As An Intervention Tool With Pediatric Cancer Patients, Megan Cahill

This study evaluates the Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) as a tool to describe hearing loss and predict when hearing aids would be appropriate for pediatric oncology patients who have received or are currently receiving cisplatin. The efficacy of the SII is compared to the Brock grade which is commonly used for patients with ototoxic hearing loss secondary to cisplatin treatment. The SII is a discrete measure that precisely reflects the patient’s functional hearing status and is highly correlated with the need for audiologic intervention.

Verification Of Computed Tomographic Estimates Of Cochlear Implant Array Position: A Micro-Ct And Histological Analysis, Jessica Teymouri

We examine the efficacy two volume spatial registration of pre and postoperative clinical computed tomography (CT) imaging to verify post-operative electrode array placement in cochlear implant (CI) patients. To measure the degree of accuracy with which the composite image predicts in-vivo placement of the array, we replicate the CI surgical process in cadaver heads. Pre-operative, post-operative, micro CT imaging and histology are utilized for verification.

Temporal Processing In Listeners With Unilateral Hearing Loss, Deborah K. Miller

Temporal processing is examined for sounds delivered to the intact ear of individuals with unilateral hearing, and delivered to one ear of individuals with normal, bilateral hearing. Two temporal processing skills are assessed: 1) the ability to detect sinusoidal amplitude modulation of a wide-band noise, for various modulation frequencies, and 2) the just-noticeable-difference for temporal complexity of random-spectrogram-sounds.

Background: MicroRNAs (miRs) are non-coding RNA molecules involved in post-transcriptional regulation, with diverse functions in tissue development, differentiation, cell proliferation and apoptosis. miRs may be less prone to degradation during formalin fixation, facilitating miR expression studies in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue.

Results: Our study demonstrates that the TaqMan Human MicroRNA Array v1.0 (Early Access) platform is suitable for miR expression analysis in FFPE tissue with a high reproducibility (correlation coefficients of 0.95 between duplicates, p < 0.00001) and outlines the optimal performance conditions of this platform using clinical FFPE samples. We also outline a method of data analysis looking at differences in miR abundance between FFPE and fresh-frozen samples. By dividing the profiled miR into abundance strata of high (Ct35), we show that reproducibility between technical replicates, equivalent dilutions, and FFPE vs. frozen samples is best in the high abundance stratum. We also demonstrate that the miR expression profiles of FFPE samples are comparable to those of fresh-frozen samples, with a correlation of up to 0.87 (p < 0.001), when examining all miRs, regardless of RNA extraction method used. Examining correlation coefficients between FFPE and fresh-frozen samples in terms of miR abundance reveals correlation coefficients of up to 0.32 (low abundance), 0.70 (medium abundance) and up to 0.97 (high abundance).

Background: The family plays a vital role in shaping adolescent behaviours. The present study investigated the associations between family structure and substance use among Hong Kong Chinese adolescents.

Methods: A total of 32,961 Form 1 to 5 (grade 7-12 in the US) Hong Kong students participated in the Youth Smoking Survey in 2003-4. An anonymous questionnaire was used to obtain information about family structure, daily duration of parent-child conversation, smoking, alcohol drinking and drug use. Logistic regression was used to calculate the adjusted odds ratios (OR) for each substance use by family structure.

This paper will be an analysis of the psychological disorder of major depression. First, the classification of this disorder using the DSM-IV-TR will be reviewed. The areas of etiology, differential diagnosis, and treatment will then be considered. Following, a theory-specific approach to the disease including theoretical framework, diagnosis and treatment, and outcomes of using this approach, will be examined. Finally a personal reflection on the subject of major depression, and lessons learned from this project, will be discussed.
