Context: The study investigated the regulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-9 in obesity-associated insulin resistance in humans.

Objectives: The objectives of the investigation were to study MMP-9 regulation by insulin resistance and pioglitazone treatment in impaired glucose tolerant subjects using adipose tissue biopsies and study the mechanism of MMP-9 regulation by pioglitazone in adipocyte cultures.

Research Design: 86 nondiabetic, weight-stable subjects between 21 and 66 yr of age were recruited in a university hospital research center setting. Introduction: Peer review is an essential process for physicians because it facilitates improved quality of patient care and continuing physician learning and improvement. However, peer review often is not well received by radiologists, who note that it is time intensive, subjective, and lacks demonstrable impact on patient care. Current advances in peer review include the RADPEER system with its standardization of discrepancies and incorporation of the peer review process into the PACS itself. Lumbar arterial injury after trauma is a rare cause of significant retroperitoneal haemorrhage. Early diagnosis followed by endovascular transcatheter embolization is a very effective treatment to control bleeding in patients who do not respond to conservative management. We present a case of post traumatic avulsion of left fourth lumbar artery which was successfully treated with percutaneous transcatheter arterial embolization with glue.

The focus of this thesis was to capture and measure carbon dioxide concentrations upon exhalation to determine if an apnea event is occurring. Research in the fields of respiratory physiology and apnea built the foundation for the design of the standoff infant apnea monitor. The monitor is designed to track infant respiration using carbon dioxide and sound signatures of breath without touching the infant. Each detection system, audio and carbon dioxide, were designed separately and brought together for a final proof-of-concept device. The software was developed using LabView and run on a Netbook. Population dynamics of medical and nonmedical prescription opioid usage and adverse outcomes were modeled. Critical parameter values were determined by their amount of influence on model behavior. Results suggest that closing these data gaps would help researchers to better identify ways to reduce the risk of adverse outcomes.

The graduation of knowledgeable and skilled clinicians in dentistry is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for ensuring quality oral health care. A randomized, controlled clinical trial established the efficacy and safety of short-term use of hydroxyurea in adult sickle cell anemia. To examine the risks and benefits of long-term hydroxyurea usage, patients in this trial were followed for 17.5 years during which they could start or stop hydroxyurea. The purpose of this follow-up was to search for adverse outcomes and estimate mortality. For each outcome and for mortality, exact 95% confidence intervals were calculated, or tests were conducted at alpha = 0.05 level (P-value <0.05 for statistical significance). Although the death rate in the overall study cohort was high (43.1%; 4.4 per 100 person-years), mortality was reduced in individuals with long-term exposure to hydroxyurea. Survival curves demonstrated a significant reduction in deaths with long-term exposure. Twenty-four percent of deaths were due to pulmonary complications; 87.1% occurred in patients who never took hydroxyurea or took it for <5 years. Stroke, organ dysfunction, infection, and malignancy were similar in all groups. Our results, while no longer the product of a randomized study because of the ethical concerns of withholding an efficacious treatment, suggest that long-term use of hydroxyurea is safe and might decrease mortality.

Synthesis, Characterisation And Antimicrobial Activity Of Novel Phosphine Stablised Silver (1) Dicarboxylate Complexes, Vidya Dixit

The α, ω-dicarboxylic acids HOOC-(CH2)n-COOH (where n = 1-11) reacted smoothly with [Ag(CH3COO)] to yield 11 novel silver dicarboxylate complexes. These silver dicarboxylates were reacted with triphenylphosphine (PPh3) in 1:2.5, 1:4 and 1:6 molar ratios resulting in the isolation of 30 novel silver dicarboxylate triphenylphosphine derivatives. X-ray crystal structures for nine of these complexes were determined showing a variation in the structural motifs across the series with mononuclear, dinuclear, polynuclear and polymeric species being generated. When the 11 novel silver dicarboxylate complexes were reacted with bis-(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) in a 1:2 molar ratio 11 novel complexes were isolated. The complexes were …

Mentoring, a term that originated with Greek literature, has been defined as a reciprocal, enabling relationship that promotes growth and development of the mentee (Milner & Bossers, 2005; Rose, 2005; Scheerer, 2007; Schemm & Bross, 1995). Generally, this relationship focuses specifically on development of the career of the mentee. The mentoring relationship serves multiple functions and may occur in many forms, providing role modeling, support and encouragement, socialization to the culture, advocacy, and perhaps even protection. La leishmaniosis tegumentaria americana (LTA) como enfermedad endémica crónica continúa afectando a la población del medio rural venezolano, ocasionándole morbilidad y limitaciones laborales. Mediante la descripción de casos clínicos se evaluaron 38 pacientes con LTA que recibieron atención hospitalaria por úlceras leishmánicas en miembros inferiores. De los pacientes descritos 63 % eran niños, 84 % procedía del Estado Miranda, 66 % tenía una lesión ulcerosa única, 45 % recibió cefadroxilo previo al tratamiento antiparasitario específico y el 24 % había recibido inmunoterapia previa para la enfermedad.
