STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional comparative study.

PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, from June 2007 to May 2008.

The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship of calcium concentration in seminal plasma on elephant semen quality including of volume, concentration, pH and percentage of progressive motility, dead sperm and abnormal morphology, respectively. Semen collection and evaluation were done in 9 elephants of Thai Elephant Conservation Centre, National Elephant Institute, Forest Industry Organization at Lampang. Calcium in seminal plasma was measured by using colorimetric method. Data were analyzed by using Linear Regression. The results revealed that amount of calcium in seminal plasma was negative correlated with only percentage of progressive motility (p<0.05). Monthly records of bulk tank milk somatic cell count (BMSCC) of all 194 dairy herds in Muang, Khon Kaen were used as an indicator of chronic mastitis problems; i.e. BMSCC > 500,000 cells/ml at least 3 consecutive records. Twelve chronic mastitis herds in Muang, Khon Kaen were data collected on 1) general herd information, 2) milking equipment, 3) milking procedure and 4) awareness and management of farmers to the mastitis problem. The Laguna Madre in Mexico is a nursery, growth, and refuge area for shrimp and other wildlife species. These organisms support an important fishery for local industry (third place in Mexico), which may suffer diseases that are few studied. Wild shrimp were randomly collected from two sampling stations (Carrizal and Carbonera) once a month for one year (September 2007 to September 2008) to screen for virus and bacteria. On February 3, 2010, a "Letter of Concern from Bioethicists," organized by fetaldex.org, was sent to report suspected violations of the ethics of human subjects research in the off-label use of dexamethasone during pregnancy by Dr. Maria New. Copies of this letter were submitted to the FDA Office of Pediatric Therapeutics, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Office for Human Research Protections, and three universities where Dr. New has held or holds appointments. Background: Limited data are available on the relationship between muscular and performance fitness (MPF) and the incidence of type 2 diabetes.

Methods: A cohort of 3792 Japanese men completed a medical examination that included MPF and cardiorespiratory fitness tests. MPF index composite score was calculated using Z-scores from vertical jump, sit-ups, side step, and functional reach tests.

Results: The mean follow-up period was 187 months (15.6 years). There were 240 patients who developed type 2 diabetes during follow-up. Relative risks and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for incidence of diabetes across baseline quartiles of MPF index composite score were obtained using …

Objective - This study examines whether the psychological traits of hopelessness and depressive symptoms are related to endothelial dysfunction.

Methods - Data come from a subsample of 434 respondents in the 2001-2003 Chicago Community Adult Health Study (CCAHS), a population-based survey designed to study the impact of psychological attributes, neighborhood environment, and socio-economic circumstances on adults age 18 and over. Circulating biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction including e-selectin, p-selectin and s-ICAM1 were obtained from serum samples. Hopelessness was measured by responses to two questions and depressive symptoms were measured by an 11-item version of the CES-D. Multivariate regression models tested whether …

We investigate an alternative conceptualization of neighborhood context and its association with health. Using an index that measures a continuum of concentrated advantage and disadvantage, we examine whether the relationship between neighborhood conditions and health varies by socio-economic status. Using NHANES III data geo-coded to census tracts, we find that while largely uneducated neighborhoods are universally deleterious, individuals with more education benefit from living in highly educated neighborhoods to a greater degree than individuals with lower levels of education.

Fluorescence molecular tomography (FMT) systems coupled to conventional imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography provide unique opportunities to combine data sets and improve image quality and content. Yet, the ideal approach to combine these complementary data is still not obvious. This preclinical study compares several methods for incorporating MRI spatial prior information into FMT imaging algorithms in the context of in vivo tissue diagnosis. While hepatic arterial chemoembolization is efficacious for a number of malignancies, there is scant data regarding treatment of pancreatic adenocarcinoma. We report a complete radiographic response at one year from diagnosis of metastatic pancreatic carcinoma. Gemcitabine/cisplatin based chemoembolization may be of potential benefit for patients with liver-dominant metastases from pancreatic carcinoma. Given the typical survival of 6 months or less in this patient group with standard therapies, further research is warranted.

An understanding of global health and the development of cultural competence are important outcomes of today's baccalaureate nursing programs. Thoughtfully designed International experiences can provide excellent opportunities to achieve those outcomes. Based Ono 16 years of providing International experiences within a baccalaureate curriculum, components are identified that contribute to the development of a sustainable international program. Areas addressed in the article are evaluating the fit with university and college mission, establishing the program within the university operational structure, selecting faculty and students, developing sites, designing a course, and program evaluation.

Although recent survey data make it possible to examine inequalities in maternal and newborn health care in developing countries, analyses have not tended to take into consideration the special nature of urban poverty.

Using improved methods to measure urban poverty in 30 countries, we found substantial inequalities in maternal and newborn health, and in access to health care.

The ‘‘urban advantage’’ is, for some, non-existent. The urban poor do not necessarily have better access to services than the rural poor, despite their proximity to services.

This paper discusses a methodological approach to research that enhances critical analysis by contextualizing qualitative research findings within participants' individual experiences. We demonstrate the combined use of life history methods and feminist narrative analysis to explore Black women's everyday experiences with mental illness, from their perspectives. These interpretive methods reach beyond pathologized conceptions of identity and adjustment that often narrowly characterize mental illness among Black women. Instead, these methods holistically describe a participant's experiences and strategies she uses to pursue goals and enhance her life. Only recently there have been significant scientific studies published that compare the effectiveness of the commonly prescribed treatments. This paper reviews the most recent research and literature on convergence insufficiency and its treatment.

RECENT FINDINGS: The first large-scale placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trials to study the various treatments of convergence insufficiency have recently been published. This study compared the efficacy of enrofloxacin, given immediately or 6 hrs after infection against Escherichia coli or Pasteurella multocida. In the first experiment, thirty, 12-week-old male layer chickens were divided into 3 groups of 10 each. Chickens in group 1, 2 and 3 were infected with E. coli serotype O78 by left thoracic air sac injection. Group 1 was given enrofloxacin (10 mg/kg), dissolved in drinking water immediately receiving E. coli. Group 2 was given enrofloxacin 6 hrs after receiving E. coli. The antimicrobial resistant characteristics both of the cellular and molecular levels of Escherichia coli in broilers were performed by disk diffusion test and polymerase chain reaction technique. Specific primers for the aadA, aac(3)-IV, cmlA, cat1, tetA, sul1, SHV, CITM, ereA and dhfrV gene were used to detect resistance to gentamicin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, cephalothin, ampicillin, erythromycin, sulfonamide+trimetroprim. The 30 samples of E. coli were found to be 100% antimicrobial disk resistant to tetracycline, ampicillin and erythromycin and revealed a 90%, 93.3% and 73.3% resistant gene to tetA, CITM and ereA, respectively. While resistance to 73.3% cephalothin and 26.7% sulfonamide+trimethoprim was revealed …

The characteristic of erythrocytes, leukocytes and thrombocytes of a captive Irrawaddy river dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) was described using blood sample collected from caudal vein. By morphological and ultrastructural studies, erythrocytes showed similar size as in humans and contained cytoplasmic electron dense hemoglobin without nucleus. Multilobulated granulocytes composed of cytoplasmic round-to-elongated granulecontaining neutrophils and round-to-oval shaped granule-bearing eosinophils while basophil was very scanty. Monocytes displayed azulophilic granules and vacuolated cytoplasm with pseudopodia. Lymphocytes showed equal amounts of heterochromatin and euchromatin with numerous mitochondria in their cytoplasm. Isolation Of Actinobacillus Pleuropneumoniae Serotype 15-Like Strain From A Porcine Tonsil In Thailand: A Case Report, Walaiporn Tonpitak

An isolate of Actinobacillus (A.) pleuropneumoniae from porcine tonsil samples was identified as serotype 15-like strain, which was previously isolated in Australia, North America and Japan. It was characterized by biochemical testing performed for Actinobacillus sp. and confirmed as A. pleuropneumoniae by PCR and nucleotide sequencing of 16s rDNA. The isolate contains apxIBD, apxIICA, apxIIIBD, apxIIICA and apxIVA gene. The result of PCR-REA of apxIVA method was identical as A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 15 strain HS143 reference strain. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the relationship between maternal methadone dose and the incidence of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).

STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective cohort study of pregnant women treated with methadone for opiate addiction who delivered live-born neonates between 1996 and 2006. Four dose groups, on the basis of total daily methadone dose, were compared (160 mg/d). The primary outcome was treatment for NAS. Symptoms of NAS were objectively measured with the Finnegan scoring system, and treatment was initiated for a score>24 during the prior 24 hours.
