Aim: In this study, it was planned to compare the features of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis patients over age 15 years. Materials and methods: We compared 360 newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) patients who were treated and followed up in Kahramanlar Tuberculosis Dispensary between 2000 and 2003, and were older than 15 years of age. The medical records of both patient groups were investigated in terms of age, sex, accompanying diseases, contact history and means of diagnosis. Aim: To investigate the efficacy of quantitative fluorescent-polymerase chain reaction (QF-PCR) in the diagnosis of aneuploidy. Materials and methods: The study included 40 pregnant women considered to be at high risk, based on positive trisomy 21 screening results, that underwent amniocentesis for karyotyping to detect chromosomal anomalies. In amniotic fluid aneuploidy detection was carried out by both standard karyotyping and the QF-PCR method, and the results obtained with both methods were compared. Aim: Endoscopic polypectomy has an important place in the treatment of polyps—the preliminary lesions of colorectal cancers. This study aimed to discuss the outcomes of endoscopic polypectomy in 467 patients for 692 polyps over the course of 20 years. Materials and methods: The records of 692 endoscopic polypectomies performed in 467 patients between July 1988 and July 2008 were retrospectively evaluated. Results: Patient age ranged from 3 to 85 years (mean: 50.6 years), and 302 of the 467 (64.7%) patients were male. Polypectomy was performed for 692 polyps (mean: 1.5; range: 1-12). Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the importance of digital rectal examination (DRE), serum total prostate specific antigen (PSA), percent free PSA (fPSA%), and PSA density (PSAD) in the prediction of high radical prostatectomy Gleason’s scores (GSs) ≥ 7 in patients with clinically localized prostate cancer. Materials and methods: Two hundred twenty-five patients who underwent radical prostatectomy for clinically localized prostate cancer were included in the study. The patients were grouped with respect to their radical prostatectomy GSs: group 1 including the patients with GSs < 6 (n = 170) and group 2 including the ones with GSs ≥ 7 (n = 55). The groups were compared with respect to potential predictors of a high GS, which were patient age, gland volume (Vp) obtained by transrectal ultrasound, DRE, PSA, fPSA%, and PSAD. Results: The mean age, PSA, fPSA%, and PSAD values of groups 1 and 2 were 65.23 ± 7.7 and 65.05 ± 7.1 years, 11.20 ± 9.2 and 11.09 ± 6.8 ng/mL, 16.2 ± 8.6 and 15.5 ± 8.1, and 0.25 ± 0.20 and 0.28 ± 0.18 ng/mL/cc, respectively. Aim: Previous studies reported the relation of left-handedness with dental and head traumas in normal population. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between dental traumas, such as non-vitality and fracture, and left-handedness. Materials and methods: Twenty three Turkish international professional boxers were included in the study. Existence of teeth that had trauma and loss of vitality in these boxers were investigated. Results: The mean number of non-vital teeth was higher in left-handers than in right-handers for right-lower, left-upper, left-lower, and total regions, but not for the right-upper region. Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a rare clinical entity in childhood. Two children, aged 10 and 14 years, were hospitalized for acute abdominal pain. Clinical and laboratory findings were compatible with AP. Both patients were given supportive medications. Two days after admission, the first patient had purpuric lesions on both buttocks and lower extremities, and occult bleeding. The clinical picture was consistent with Henoch-Schonlein purpura, with pancreatitis and gastrointestinal involvement. Congenital absence of Internal Carotid Artery (ICA) is a rare disorder. This anomaly may be an isolated entity or may be associated with other organ, or system anomalies (1). Multicystic Dysplastic Kidney (MCDK) is a congenital mal-development in which the renal cortex is replaced by numerous cysts of multiple sizes. Urologic and non-urologic anomalies may accompany MCDK (2). In this paper, we detail a case of congenital agenesis of ICA and the existence of MCDK. To our knowledge, this is the first of such a case to be reported regarding the co-occurrence of ICA agenesis and MCDK.

Aim The aim of this study was to evaluate the epidemiological risk factors for Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) patients admitted to our hospitals between January 2004- December 2006. Materials and methods: This was a study of 63 CCHF patients whose definitive diagnosis was based on the detection of CCHF virus-specific IgM by ELISA and/or of genomic segments of the CCHF virus by real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and 50 healthy controls. Aim : To determine the accuracy of the shock index in the early detection of hemodynamic changes after acute blood loss. Materials and methods: This prospective, observational study was performed on blood donors who were giving 450 mL of blood over 20 min. Aim: We aimed to assess the predictive value of a combination some of basic serum biochemical markers for the diagnosis of clinically significant fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C. Materials and methods: Blood samples from 68 patients with chronic hepatitis C infection were analyzed for aspartate aminotransferase, prothrombin INR, and platelet count. The liver histopathology was evaluated using the Knodell protocol. The relationship between the serum biochemical markers and severity of the stages were examined. Aim: To describe the clinical characteristics and outcome of optic neuritis (ON) cases treated with high dose intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) in a tertiary referral clinic in Ankara, Turkey. Materials and methods: Consecutive patients in the past 5 years with acute isolated ON, who were treated with IVMP and had a follow-up of at least 3 months, were reviewed. Aim: To report our experience with gadolinium enhanced computed tomography angiography (Gd-CTA) for end-stage liver disease patients who are candidates for liver transplantation as an alternative to iodinated contrast enhanced CTA and gadolinium enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) angiography. This paper reports a critical assessment of how burnout level of the health staff working at a bone marrow transplantation unit changes after psychoeducational seminars. The article discusses the importance of water treatment in providing quality and safe drinking water. A historical background of the U.S. federal regulation of drinking water quality is presented. It was found by the Public Health Service in 1969 that only 60 percent of the systems surveyed delivered water that met all the Public Health Service standards. Cervical cancer is a major health problem and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide. The purposes of this dissertation are threefold; to examine cervical cancer screening methods used in developing countries, evaluate prevailing attitudes toward new human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines and share results from a pretest of two instruments designed to measure knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about cervical cancer, human papillomavirus infection and the new vaccines among medically underserved populations. Muscle cramps are involuntary, painful, sudden contractions of skeletal muscles that can cause detrimental effects on athletic performance. Recent data suggest that low intakes of dietary calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) can enhance or cause muscle cramps. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between Ca and Mg intakes and muscle cramping in female college athletes. Athletes completed a 24-hour dietary recall and a survey on frequency and location of muscle cramps. Of those surveyed, 8 participated in basketball, 21 in softball, and 10 in gymnastics. The recent Beijing Olympics brought to the surface the political implications of the host city selection. Have the past IOC site selections been politically influenced? Single ventricle physiology offers limited options with significant morbidity and mortality. The Glenn shunt is a mid-stage procedure for the Fontan circulation. With persistent left Superior Vena Cava (SVC) and Azygos continuation of the Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) to the SVC, needs the development of bilateral bidirectional Glenn shunts. Fifteen patients underwent Bidirectional Glen shunt procedure over a period of ten years. Of these two were found to have left SVC along with interrupted IVC and its Azygos continuation to the SVC. A recent letter to the American Psychiatric Association (APA) from Sen Chuck Grassley about the APA’s financial relationship with pharmaceutical companies raises concerns about undue industry influence. By instituting a disclosure policy for DSM-V, the APA took a halting first step in restoring public trust in the most influential text on psychiatric taxonomy in the world. Unfortunately, the APA’s efforts at creating a conflict of interest (COI) policy have failed to ensure that the process for revising diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines is one that the public can trust.
