Lobular capillary hemangioma is a benign, rapidly growing lesion of the skin and mucous membranes. It may rarely present as a mass of considerable size and thus entirely fill the nasal cavity; such lesions have been termed giant lobular capillary hemangioma. Its etiology remains obscure. Although it has no predilection for age, it is more common in the third decade and in females. Lobular capillary hemangioma usually involves the gingiva, lips, tongue, and buccal mucosa. Aim: To compare the efficacies and the rebound bilirubin levels of infants who received light emitting diode phototherapy and double standard conventional phototherapy. Materials and Methods: One hundred twenty-three healthy term and near term (>=35 weeks) infants requiring phototherapy for non-hemolytic hyperbilirubinemia were enrolled in the study. All infants' gestational age, type of feeding, age at phototherapy, total serum bilirubin level at initiation and termination of phototherapy, duration of phototherapy, rebound TSB levels, and type of phototherapy were recorded. Aim: The GYS2 gene, which encodes for glycogen synthase 2 (liver) (GS), is an enzyme responsible for the synthesis of 1,4-linked glucose chains in glycogen. The present study aimed to investigate the homology, conserved domain, and promoter and expression profiles of the human GYS2 gene among various vertebrate species using bioinformatic tools. Materials and Methods: We analyzed the homology with NCBI blast, the conserved domain with EBI ClustalW and Mega4, the promoter with Genomatix, and the expression profiles with DigiNorthern software. Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of isoflavones on cardiovascular risk markers including plasma nitrite/nitrate, homocysteine, and lipid levels in Turkish women in the early postmenopausal period. Materials and Methods: Ninety participants between 42 and 59 years of age were randomly assigned to receive twice a day either isoflavone tablet (n:45) or placebo tablets (n = 45). Aim: Adipocytokines are now considered important players in the etiopathogenesis of numerous metabolic and inflammatory disorders. However, plasma leptin and resistin levels in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are still unclear. We aimed to investigate the plasma levels of leptin and resistin in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and to compare them with controls. Materials and Methods: Consecutive 52 patients with RA were compared with 52 control subjects in terms of mean leptin and resistin levels. Malignant infantile osteopetrosis (MIOP) is a rare inherited bone disease characterized by reduced or dysregulated activity of osteoclasts, which results in generalized osteosclerosis. This leads to abnormal bone marrow cavity formation and to the clinical signs and symptoms of bone marrow failure and nerve compression. Symptoms related to early or late hypocalcemia may appear as the first presentation of MIOP in a newborn. We present a 14-day-old boy with neonatal hypocalcaemia due to MIOP.

A 37-year-old male patient with fever, mild respiratory distress, diffuse goiter, and hepatosplenomegaly was admitted to our hospital. Clinical and laboratory findings showed that he had recurrent respiratory tract infections-namely bronchiectasis-due to common variable immunodeficiency disease (CVID) and AA-type amyloid deposition in the thyroid gland. Although recurrent infections as a consequence of inadequate gammaglobulin (IVIG) substitution therapy are regarded as the main cause of the development of amyloidosis, amyloidosis in a patient with hypo/agammaglobulinemia is extremely rare. Immunosuppression facilitates varicella zoster virus (VZV) reactivation in immunocompromised patients. Atypical presentation such as disseminated disease of herpes zoster infection has been described in immunosuppressed patients. One of the best choices of therapy in herpes zoster infection is acyclovir, but long-term therapy may cause resistance to it. In this report a disseminated herpes zoster infection is described in a patient with T cell lymphoma after acyclovir/valacyclovir therapy. The infection was irresponsive to acyclovir and valacyclovir and we were unable to control the infection because it was not possible to obtain foscarnet and the patient died due to Staphylococcus epidermis sepsis.

Desmoplastic melanoma (DM) is a very rare variant of malignant melanoma. Mucosal involvement in DM is exceedingly rare and the differential diagnosis is problematic for surgical pathologists. To the best of our knowledge only 16 cases of DM originating from mucosal surfaces of the oral cavity have been described in the literature. Herein we describe a 59-year-old male with primary DM of the oral mucosa and discuss the status of p53, caspase-3, and FasL (Fas ligand) in the pathogenesis of this rare disease.

Measurement Of Total Antioxidant Response In Colorectal Cancer Using A Novel Automated Method, Abdullah Özgönül, Nurten Aksoy, Fuat Di̇lmec, Ali̇ Uzunköy, Şahi̇n Aksoy

Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the antioxidative status in patients with colorectal cancer and healthy controls, based on measurements made using a novel method. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted between 2005 and 2007, and included 30 patients with colorectal cancer and 30 healthy controls. To determine the antioxidative status of the patients and healthy controls, serum total antioxidant capacity was measured using a novel automated method. Blood samples were taken from the healthy controls and the patients. Results: Total serum antioxidant capacity was significantly lower in colorectal cancer patients than in healthy persons (P < 0.023). Conclusions: Patients with colorectal cancer are exposed to oxidative stress, which may have a role in the pathogenesis of the disease. The novel automated method used in this study was developed in our laboratory, and is feasible and fully automated; therefore, it may be useful for evaluating oxidative-antioxidative balance in patients with colorectal cancer.

Aim: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely used in the diagnosis of acute bilirubin encephalopathy, but the relationship between MRI findings and neurodevelopmental outcome in newborns with acute bilirubin encephalopathy remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between acute bilirubin encephalopathy, MRI findings, and neurodevelopmental outcome. Materials and Methods: The study included 13 infants with acute bilirubin encephalopathy. MRI was performed at 11-30 days of age. Materials and methods: Fifty patients who were operated for nasal septal deviation between 2006 and 2008 were included in our study. Nasal packs with airway tubes were used for all patients following septoplasty. Aim: To investigate annexin A2 (ANXA2), annexin A7 (ANXA7), and annexin A11 (ANXA11) expression in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Although overexpression of ANXA2 has been reported in HNSCC, there are no studies on ANXA7 or ANXA11 in the same region. Materials and Methods: ANXA2, ANXA7, and ANXA11 were immunohistochemically studied in paraffin-embedded sections obtained from 43 patients with HNSCC. Aim: To assess the correlation between pathological and radiological findings in patients with pure bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC). Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the pathological and radiological findings in patients with pure BAC. Results: We reviewed the case records, pathological specimens, and computer files of 26 patients with a pathologic diagnosis of pure BAC during a 3-year period. There was a statistically significant relationship between pathological and radiological findings (X^2 = 15.143, P = 0.004). Aim: Determining the difference regarding obesity in German and Turkish adults. Materials and Methods: This study examined a cross-section of adults aged 30-79 years old. Age-adjustment was uniformly provided for comparisons. Results: Among 3055 Germans and 2925 Turks, Turkish women had significantly higher markers of (abdominal) obesity than German women, while waist circumference (WC) was similar among males. Blood pressure (BP), concentrations of total, LDL-cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B were significantly higher among Germans, whereas Turks had markedly higher fasting triglycerides and lower HDL-cholesterol. Aim: In this retrospective study, we aimed to compare the treatment results of pneumatic and holmium laser-assisted ureteroscopy in managing distal ureteral calculi in children. Materials and methods: The study group included a total of 36 children (23 boys, 13 girls) who underwent ureteroscopy between June 1998 and April 2008 due to distal ureteral calculi. Aim: As in hyperthyroidism, cardiac arrhythmias can be seen in hypothyroidism. In this study, we measured P wave dispersion among hypothyroid patients to evaluate atrial fibrillation risk. Methods: 75 patients who received first time diagnosis of hypothyroidism and 40 normal control patients were included in this study. Each patient had echocardiographic and electrocardiographic studies were carried out. Groups were compared for statistically significant difference in P wave dispersion, minimum P wave duration and maximum P wave duration. Aim: To determine the efficacy and safety of cefoperazone-sulbactam combined with amikacin in the treatment of febrile neutropenia in children with cancer. Materials and Methods: The study included 20 cancer cases with 26 febrile neutropenia (FEN) episodes. Patient selection criteria were defined according to the guidelines issued by the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA). Results: Patients diagnosed with acute leukemia (58%) and solid tumors (42%) were recorded. Twelve (46.2%) of the primary disease cases were refractory. Aim: Studies about relationships between diabetes mellitus, diabetic complications, and cognitive functions have been initiative factors for this study. We evaluated various relations between procedure of the disease, diabetic complications, and cognitive functions among diabetic subjects. Materials and methods: Type-2 diabetic patients were evaluated for their disease status, complications, and cognitive functions (by Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) test). We compared MMSE results of the patients with the control group. Results: We evaluated 75 patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus and 49 control subjects. Orientation (P = 0.006), attention and calculation (P = 0.002), and total (P < 0.001) scores of the control group were significantly greater compared to the diabetic group. We observed negative correlation between the length of disease and cognitive functions within the diabetic group. Recall scores of the diabetic subjects with 6 and less HBAIC levels were significantly greater than those with 6.1 and greater levels (P = 0.049). We observed negative relations between registration scores and retinopathy, but not between orientation and total scores and hypertension among diabetic subjects. Conclusion: Type-2 diabetes mellitus may destroy cognitive function. Length of disease, high serum HBAIC levels, hypertension, and retinopathy are significant additional risk factors. We conclude that cognitive function assessment should be routine procedure in the management of type-2 diabetes mellitus.

Aim: Data on antral nodularity in adults are sparse. Although the association of nodular gastritis with Helicobacter pylori infection is well known, its potential as a premalignant lesion and its association with other gastroduodenal diseases are questionable. Materials and methods: The medical records of the patients between 2003 and 2006 were retrospectively reviewed to analyze their demographics, clinical characteristics, and endoscopic and pathological features. Results: Of 9949 adult patients who underwent endoscopy, 185 (1.86%) were diagnosed with nodular gastritis, 167 (90%) of whom had dyspepsia.
