The expression of Fas/Fas Ligand (FasL) is thought to be involved in the immune privileged status of the testis, cornea and the placenta. The objective of this study was to see whether FasL mRNA was expressed in the epithelium of the porcine oviduct, where spermatozoa, oocytes and developing embryos avoid elimination by the female immune system during the estrous cycle. The distribution of Fas/FasL might provide information about immune privileged sites in the pig oviduct. Avian coccidiosis is a protozoan disease which can be caused by at least 7 species of the genus Eimeria. Species of Eimeria in chicken are distinguished by their distinct morphology and where sites the parasotes are deposited in the small intestine of the infected birds. The criteria for Eimeria species differentiation when the disease occures is sometimes unreliable. Epistatic interactions among regulatory components of the serotonin (5-HT) neurotransmitter system may be an important aspect of 5-HT function. Because 5-HT dysregulation is associated with several common psychiatric disorders, the potential for epistasis among genetic variants in the 5-HT transporter (SERT), 5-HT1B terminal autoreceptor and the 5- HT1A somatodendritic autoreceptor should be examined. In this study, output from a dynamic minimal model of 5-HT function was compared to empirical results in the literature. This study examined the effectiveness of a unique extracurricular after-school initiative designed to promote healthy diets and exercise in urban African Americans. The Students and Parents Actively Involved in Being Fit after-school program was offered for 12 weeks to students and their parents/guardians at an urban middle school. Specific aims of the intervention were to increase participants’ vegetable and fruit intake by using established 5 A Day for Better Health educational resource materials/activities and to affect their health-related fitness through dance, games, and fitness activities. African Americans, Hispanics, and those with low income experience disproportionate health problems that can be prevented by physical activity and a lower fat diet. In this descriptive cross-sectional study, antecedents of diet and exercise within the Health Promotion/Transtheoretical Model were examined among low-income African American and Hispanic seventh-grade students (n = 127). Total support was associated with higher physical activity for girls. African Americans perceived greater social support for activity than Hispanics. Family models and support for physical activity and low-fat diet were greater as family income increased. However, higher family role models and lower dietary fat were found …

We have previously identified mgrA (rat) as a regulator of autolysis in Staphylococcus aureus. Besides its effect on autolytic activity, we recently found alterations in the expression of regulator and target virulence genes in the mgrA mutant. Northern analysis and transcription fusion assays showed that inactivation of mgrA has led to the downregulation of RNAIII of agr and hla and upregulation of sarS and spa. Although both SarA and agr are activators of α-hemolysin and a repressors of protein A synthesis, we found that the transcription of sarA was not affected in the mgrA mutant and …

Older men are much less likely to be aware of community services available to them and they are less likely to utilize services generally. This underutilization is affected by the way in which social services are organized and how practitioners function within them. Since there are greater numbers of elderly women and women utilize services more readily, practice tends to be female-centered. Malignant tumors of the nasal cavity are rare. We report the case of an elderly woman who consulted us with a 4-year history of progressive nasal obstruction, occasional epistaxis, facial pain, and watering of the eyes. A diagnosis of olfactory neuroblastoma was established by histopathology and confirmed by immunohistochemistry. On staging, the mass was classified as a Kadish stage B tumor. The mass was excised via a lateral rhinotomy approach, and the tumor was peeled away completely from the cribriform plate with endoscopes. The patient underwent postoperative radiation, and she was free of recurrence at follow-up 15 months later.

During sperm transport in the female pig, a proportion of the spermatozoa is arrested at the uterotubal junction and the isthmus, where an oviductal sperm reservoir is built up. The sperm reservoir maintains sperm viability and controls the release of fertilizing spermatozoa so that only a small subpopulation reaches the site of fertilization, thus diminishing the risk of polyspermy. In vitro research has focused on sperm binding as the main mechanism of sperm storage, sperm release and modulation of capacitation, but little attention has been paid to the sperm reservoir fluid, its composition and the control of capacitation in vivo. …

Culture media and culture time play important roles in meiotic competence and in vitro development of domestic cats oocytes. This experiment was designed to investigate the effects of culture media (M199 versus DMEM) on the in vitro maturation of domestic cat oocytes, after culturing for 24, 36 and 48 h. Domestic cat ovaries were obtained from routine ovariohysterectomy at an animal hospital, cooled to 4oC and transferred immediately to the laboratory. The lung of a stillborn female Asian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) was disected for macroscopic anatomical study. It’s tracheobronchial ramifications were studied by a contrast radiographic technique using barium sulphate infusion. The lung was thick and triangular in shape. The right lung was divided into 4 lobes: cranial, middle, caudal and accessory, while the left lung had 3 lobes: cranial, middle and caudal. One hundred eighty, male layer-type chickens with no antibodies were divided into 6 groups, 30 birds in each. Each group was vaccinated with a different strain of ND vaccine, La Sota, B1, Ulster, VG/GA and 6/10 for groups 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, respectively. All vaccinated birds received vaccine when 5-weeks-old, by intranasal inhalation. Birds in group 6 were non-vaccinated controls. All birds were weighed when 5-, 8- and 10-weeks-old. The aim of this study was to investigate the reproductive performance of lactating sows in Thailand kept in farrowing housing using an evaporative cooling system (EVAP) in comparison with conventional farrowing system (CONV). The study was based on data from one commercial sow herd, with four farrowing houses (one EVAP and three CONV) with sows of different parities, randomly circulating between these farrowing systems. In the herd, continuous farrowing and cross-fostering was practiced, and the litters were weaned at 18.7 ± 1.3 days of age. Sarcoidosis is a chronic granulomatous multi-system disease with a clinical picture often mimicking tuberculosis. We present a case of a patient who presented with a clinical picture akin to both of these granulomatous disorders and was started on anti-tuberculous regimen despite the lack of any solid evidence pointing towards tuberculosis. As a result her clinical condition continued to deteriorate for months until finally a bronchoscopic biopsy established her disease process as sarcoidosis. She was then started on systemic corticosteroid therapy for sarcoidosis and during the ensuing period has shown marked improvement in her clinical picture with near normalization of the …

The importance of beta-chemokines (or CC chemokine ligands - CCL) in the development of inflammatory lesions in the central nervous system of patients with multiple sclerosis and rodents with experimental allergic encephalomyelitis is strongly supported by descriptive studies and experimental models. Our recent genetic scans in families identified haplotypes in the genes of CCL2, CCL3 and CCL11-CCL8-CCL13 which showed association with multiple sclerosis. Complementing the genetic associations, we also detected a distinct regional expression regulation for CCL2, CCL7 and CCL8 in correlation with chronic inflammation in multiple sclerosis brains. More than half of patients with X-linked lympho-proliferative disease, which is caused by a defect in the intracellular adapter protein SH2D1A, suffer from an extreme susceptibility to Epstein-Barr virus. One-third of these patients, however, develop dysgammaglobulenemia without an episode of severe mononucleosis. Here we show that in SH2D1A-/- mice, both primary and secondary responses of all Ig subclasses are severely impaired in response to specific antigens. Because germinal centers were absent in SH2D1A-/- mice upon primary immunization, and because SH2D1A was detectable in wt germinal center B cells, we examined whether SH2D1A-/- B cell functions were impaired. Nigrostriatal degeneration, the pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD), is mirrored by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) intoxication. MPTP-treated animals show the common behavioral, motor, and pathological features of human disease. We demonstrated previously that adoptive transfer of Copaxone (Cop-1) immune cells protected the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway in MPTP-intoxicated mice. Herein, we evaluated this protection by quantitative proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (1H MRSI). 1H MRSI performed in MPTP-treated mice demonstrated that N-acetyl aspartate (NAA) was significantly diminished in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and striatum, regions most affected in human disease. The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) receives a dense serotonergic innervation that modulates photic input to the SCN via serotonin 1B (5-HT1B) presynaptic receptors on retinal glutamatergic terminals. However, the majority of 5-HT1B binding sites in the SCN are located on nonretinal terminals and most axonal terminals in the SCN are GABAergic. We therefore tested the hypothesis that 5-HT1B receptors might also be located on SCN GABAergic terminals by examining the effects of the highly selective 5-HT1B receptor agonist CP-93,129 on SCN miniature inhibitory postsynaptic currents (mIPSCs). The present invention relates to the use of nanoscintillation systems, or nanoparticles containing fluor molecules, that can be used to detect an electron-emitting or alpha-particle-emitting radioisotope in the absence of organic-solvents commonly used in organic-based liquid scintillation cocktails. The invention also relates to compositions and use of three oil-in-water microemulsion precursors that can be engineered rapidly, reproducibly, and cost-effectively to produce useful nanoparticles less than 100 nanometers.
