Leptin is a 16kDa peptide hormone that has recently been implicated in human reproductive processes. Like other hormones, leptin exerts its influence through its receptor. Of the three major isoforms of the receptor (OB-Ra, OB-Rb, and 0B-Re), OB-Ra (the dominant short form) has been implicated in transport processes within rat and human placentas, suggesting a role for it in implantation and pregnancy maintenance. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are ligand-dependent transcription factors that are a subfamily of nuclear hormone receptors. PPARs form heterodimers with another nuclear hormone receptor, RXRα, before binding to PPAR response elements (PPREs). Recently PPARϒ/RXRα heterodimers have …

The study explores regional general practitioners' attitudes to palliative care through semi- structured interviewing using a qualitative methodology. Attitudes to palliative care were examined using the general practitioners' accounts of their experiences and perceptions of caring for terminally ill patients. The participants were ten registered general practitioners located within the Greater Sunbury Division of General Practice in the South West of Western Australia. A semi-structured interview schedule containing ten open-ended questions was used to assess regional general practitioners' attitudes to palliative care. The Shuttle Walking Test (SWT), with its externally paced characteristics, is commonly used as an objective measure of functional capacity. The reliability and validity of the SWT has been previously shown but only in patient populations. No studies have been carried out to investigate the validity of the SWT in healthy adult women. Transcriptional interference is the influence, generally suppressive, of one active transcriptional unit on another unit linked in cis. Its wide occurrence in experimental systems suggests that it may also influence transcription in many loci, but little is known about its precise nature or underlying mechanisms. Here we report a study of the interaction of two nearly identical transcription units juxtaposed in various arrangements. Each reporter gene in the constructs has its own promoter and enhancer and a strong polyadenylation signal. Nepotism is a dirty little word: Related individuals work together in entertainment, medicine, education and yes, even sports administration. This study proposes to identify the acceptance of relatives, by blood or by marriage, working together in NCAA Division II colleges in the southeastern United States. "Nepotism" is an arguably accurate descriptor of arrangements of relatives working together. However, the potential for real as well as asserted preferential treatment is shown to exist. Glycohydrolases are a group of enzymes contained predominantly within lysosomes, which are released during Kupffer cell activation or death. One of these, beta-galactosidase, has been proposed as a marker of ischemia-reperfusion injury in the liver because Kupffer cell activation represents a primary event in the injurious reperfusion cascade. In this study, we compared B-galactosidase with more traditional indicators of liver injury and function in a porcine model of liver preservation. Two cases of organophosphate toxicity were diagnosed at the University of Arkansas Poultry Science Department poultry research farm in the Spring of 2002. In both cases the birds were being treated with the organophosphate RaVap® for Northern Fowl Mites (Ornithonyssus sylvarium) infestations. A total of 61 birds died and 13 were treated successfully with atropine sulphate.

In this research 30 sucuk samples were obtained from 5 meat plants with high capacity, during 3 months (January 1998-March 1998) at 15 day intervals. At the results of determination of the 30 sucuk samples, 80% of them was not shown acceptable colour development and 93.33% had a soft texture. 83.33% of the samples cut from the surface was not indicated good colour development and 50% of them has not good marble form. This study was performed to determine the incidence and anatomo-pathologic aspects of reproductive organ tumors in laying chickens. For this research, 10,475 16-18-month-old, commercial laying hens of the Babcock genotype were obtained from four flocks in Afyon city. They were examined right after slaughtering, and reproductive organ tumors in 804 hens (7.67%) were observed. Out of these 804 hens, leiomyoma was found in 760 hens (7.25%), oviduct adenocarcinoma in 39 hens (0.37%) and leiomyoma together with oviduct adenocarcinoma in 5 hens (0.05%) were detected. This study was carried out to determine height at withers, heart girth and cannon bone circumference measurements in purebred Arabian colts and fillies at Çifteler State Farm. Data obtained from the 1980-1998 marketing catalogue, which includes 535 colts and 392 fillies in Çifteler State Farm, were used. The average values of height at withers, heart girth, and cannon bone circumference for 224 colts and 319 fillies younger than 24 months were calculated to be 141.634±0.212 cm, 152.99±0.33 cm and 17.87±0.04 cm; and 140.826±0.18 cm, 153.94±0.33 cm, and 17.47±0.04 cm, respectively. This study was carried out to investigate the survival rate, growth characteristics and some body measurements of Akkaraman and Sakız (Chios) x Akkaraman F_1 lambs. The Akkaraman breed has a fat tail and is raised in Central Anatolia, while Sakız has a long, but low fat tail and is raised in coastal areas of Western Anatolia. Lysozyme (EC 3.2.1.17) is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of \beta(1-->4) glycosidic bonds between N-acetylglucosamine (NAG) and N-acetylmuramic acid (NAM), which are present in peptidoglycan heteropolymers of the prokaryotic cell wall. The purpose of this study was the cloning and expression of the bacteriophage T4 lysozyme gene (gene e) via PCR amplification in Escherichia coli using the pUC18 and pRS416 vectors. The aim of this research is to determine the yield and chemical composition of the caviar produce from flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus, Lin.1758) in the Sufa lagoon. Acording to the results of our research 21.98% of the fish with an average live weight of 1,243.63 ± 322.44 g and 49.11 ± 3.83 cm length contains with roe. This research was carried out to determine the effect of various milk sampling intervals and different methods on the accuracy of estimation of lactation milk yield in dairy cattle. Individual daily milk weights of 599 Holstein, Simmental and Brown Swiss lactations from the Aegean Agricultural Research Institute were used. Two methods to measure target strength (TS) are introduced and compared with each other. One is the suspension method, and the other is the split-beam method. Each of them is representative of control and in situ methods, respectively. In addition, a morphological investigation of a swimbladder in a pressure tank, and the development of an instrumented package of acoustic and optical systems, are also introduced. The former is to reveal the degree of TS variation by the vertical movement of fish, and the latter is to obtain precise TS and fish behavior by the echo trace analysis method.

Factors affecting lamb weaning weight (WW) and the (co)variance components due to direct and maternal effects on weight were investigated using a small data set based on ewes involved in an embryo transfer trial. Records of 253 Welsh Mountain lambs for adjusted 50 day weaning weight were obtained from the nucleus flock of the CAMDA co-operative breeding scheme. DFREML was used for variance component analyses. Significant fixed effects included in the model were rearing dam age, sex, rearing type and year. Six different models were used to analyse variance components. The distribution of ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits (GluR1-4), considered a-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isaxole propionic acid type (AMPA-type), was investigated in the rat spinal cord by immunocytochemistry. Different distributions of the AMPA-type glutamate receptor subunits were observed in the spinal cord. Immunolabelling with antibodies to both GluR1 and GluR2/3 revealed intensive staining in the dorsal horn, while staining for GluR2/3 and GluR4 revealed dense motor neurones in the ventral horn. These results suggest that in the rat spinal cord AMPA-type glutamate receptors vary in composition according to the region where they are expressed.

Infection with the parasite Diplostomum sp. can lead to severe ocular pathology and may result in host mortalities in commercial fish farming. Here we show that such infection is rife in a major lake used for fishing in Turkey. In a study of Acanthobrama marmid fish in Keban Dam Lake, Elazığ, Turkey, we found the infection period was normally between May and September each year, and that the prevalence and abundance of eye lens parasites reached a maximum in September. Carbohydrate compositions of apolipoprotein E (apo E) isolated from rat serum very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and intermediate density lipoproteins (IDL) + low density lipoproteins (LDL) were analyzed and compared. Rat serum VLDL and IDL+LDL were isolated by a discontinuous density gradient ultracentrifugation for 7.9x107g.min. Following delipidization, apolipoproteins were subjected to sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis. Apo E polypeptides were eluted by diffusion in 100 mM PBS buffer (pH 7) containing 0.05% SDS. The clinical and gross evaluation of wrapping the facial nerve by a lyophylized duramater (LD) or an autogenous omental graft (AOG) for nerve regeneration, after experimentally induced facial paralysis which was created by neurectomies and repaired by autogenous sural nerve grafts in dogs, were undertaken.
