From its earliest days, the Population Council has recognized the importance and value of training population scientists from developing countries. Since 1952, the Council’s social science fellowship program has sustained a commitment to this goal; approximately 1,500 fellowships have been awarded for pre- and postdoctoral training in population studies. While the demand for population scientists remains strong, the field has changed substantially since those early years and a review of the program was needed. The Mellon Foundation funded a project in 2000 to assess future needs for training and support of population scientists from developing countries and assembled an international …

Primaquine is an important antimalarial drug that is often dose-limited in therapy by the onset of hemolytic anemia. It is well accepted that this toxicity is due to the action of its metabolites and not the parent compound. However, the toxic species have not been identified and little is known about the mechanism underlying primaquine-induced red cell injury. Previous studies to identify the hemotoxic metabolites have focused on the redox active phenolic derivatives of primaquine and have shown that a number of these compounds are capable of decreasing red cell GSH levels and oxidizing oxyhemoglobin to methemoglobin. However, the cost of the provision on liquid oxygen has historically been cost prohibitive under our current Medicare reimbursement schedule. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of NO in the pathogenesis of lung injury associated with pancreatitis, and the relation between malondialdehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO). Forty Wistar male rats were divided into control or pancreatitis groups, and treated with saline, L-arginine (100 mg/kg i.v.), NO donor, or N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (10 mg/kg i.v.), an inhibitor of NO synthase. Pancreatitis was induced in rats intravenously via the administration of cerulein (10 µg/kg/h) for 4 h). It has been revealed that in alloxane diabetes the content of the main phospholipids - phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidyletanolamine and phosphatidyl-phosphatidylinosite -decreases in the cells of the vascular wall, whereas the content of the methyl ethers of the fatty acids is not changed, and the content of the fractions of lipids (monoglycerides, diglycerides, triglycerides, cholesterol, free fatty acids, and cholesterol ethers) and phospholipids (phosphatidylserine, cardiolipin, lysophosphatidyletanolamine, lysocardiolipin, sphingomyelin, phosphatide acid and lysophosphatide acid) increase. The depth of these changes correlates with the heaviness of the pathological process.

Dofetilide (UK 68,798), a new antiarrhythmic agent, blocks potassium channels selectively and acts primarily by prolonging repolarization duration. The aim of this study was to investigate rate-dependent repolarization changes due to dofetilide in a fast beating in-vitro heart model. The study was designed using Langendorff perfusion of rabbit hearts at the drug concentrations of 1 nM, 3 nM and 10 nM. The electrophysiological evaluations were performed using the recording of epicardial monophasic action potentials. Colicinogeny, Lipopolysaccharide And Outer Membrane Protein Profiles Of Multi-Drug Resistant Salmonella Typhimurium Isolates From Turkey, Göksu Elpek, Bülent İçgen, Gülay Özcengi̇z

A total of 259 clinical isolates of non-repetitive non-typhi salmonellae (NTS) were previously examined for their antibiotic resistance patterns and plasmid contents. Multi-drug resistant strains comprised 19.3% (50/259) of the isolates and almost all were Salmonella typhimurium. In the present study, 35 of these multi-drug resistant S. typhimurium isolates were further characterized for colicinogeny, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and outer membrane protein (OMP) profiles. Fourteen of the 35 (40%) isolates were found to be colicin producers. All isolates showed smooth-type LPS. The reliability of the FASTPlaqueTB (FPTB) test (Biotec Ltd.) for the rapid diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis was evaluated and its diagnostic performance was compared with the Amplified Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Direct (MTD) test (Gen-Probe) by testing 80 sputum samples obtained from 77 patients. The results were compared to those of mycobacterial culture, smear and clinical course. After a chart review 14 culture-negative patients who had been on antituberculosis therapy before the study began were excluded from the final analysis. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of weight loss induced by hypocaloric diet and orlistat therapy for a four-week period on maximal work rate (Wmax) production capacity and aerobic fitness in obese patients. Fifteen obese subjects were given an integrated energy restricted diet and orlistat supplement (DO). Each patient performed two incremental ramp exercise tests using an electromagnetically braked cycle ergometer: one at the beginning and one at the end of the four-weeks to determine Wmax production capacity. Objectives: To present our experience of penetrating cardiac injuries treated at Atatürk University hospital; in 17 years 38 patients were analyzed. Methods: Patients were classified into three groups: group A (stable), 12; group B (shock), 21; and group C (agonal), five. Five patients were treated by pericardial window and three by pericardiocentesis. Two patients in group C, 19 patients in group B and five patients in group A underwent median sternotomy or thoracotomy in the operating room. A Rare Case Of Neonatal Hypotonia: Neonatal Nonketotic Hyperglycinemia, Ayhan Taşteki̇n, Rahmi̇ Örs, Behzat Özkan, Orhan Deni̇z

Hypotonia is a serious physical finding in a newborn infant. Nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH) is a rare cause of neonatal hypotonia. It is a defect of the glycine metabolism and has poor prognosis. We report a case of a newborn infant with NKH, presented with mild hypotonia and high creatine kinase values. NKH should be considered in a hypotonic newborn, especially if associated with acute deterioration, lethargy and seizures.

Mounting evidence suggests that two major vascular complications of diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis and nephropathy, are pathogenically analogous processes, with atherosclerosis occurring primarily in the microvasculature and nephropathy involving the microvasculature. Additionally, several lines of evidence point to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) as a major participant in both processes. OxLDL is found deposited in both types of vascular lesions, and appears to influence several events. It causes influx of macrophages, which ingest the oxLDL and are transformed into foam cells - a key component of atherosclerosis and glomerulosclerosis. OxLDL also appears to promote the proliferation of smooth muscle cells in atherosclerosis …

Many developed countries have reported a greater incidence and severity of asthma in both adults and children (Woolcock and Peat, 1997). Up to 90% of those diagnosed with asthma will experience some asthma symptoms during or after exercise. This condition is known as Exercise-Induced Asthma (EIA). The severity of the bout of EIA depends mainly on the type, intensity and duration of the exercise session. We have previously confirmed the presence of common antigens between Schistosoma mansoni and its vector, Biomphalaria glabrata. Cross-reactive antigens may be important as possible candidates for vaccine and diagnosis of schistosomiasis. Sera from outbred mice immunized with a soluble Biomphalaria glabrata antigen (SBgA) of non-infected B. glabrata snails recognized molecules of SBgA itself and S. mansoni AWA by Western blot. Recognition of several molecules of the SBgA were inhibited by pre-incubation with AWA (16, 30, 36, 60 and 155 kDa). The only specific molecule of AWA, inhibited by SBgA, was a 120 kDa protein. Two cases of organophosphate toxicity were diagnosed at the University of Arkansas Poultry Science Department poultry research farm in the Spring of 2002. In both cases the birds were being treated with the organophosphate RaVap® for Northern Fowl Mites (Ornithonyssus sylvarium) infestations. A total of 61 birds died and 13 were treated successfully with atropine sulphate.

The Population Council in collaboration with CARE India has been conducting an operations research (OR) study to investigate the impact of adding a livelihoods component to the Action for Slum Dwellers' Reproductive Health, Allahabad (ASRHA) Project in Uttar Pradesh run by CARE India. The ASRHA Project selected peer educators from the slums and trained them in providing reproductive health (RH) information, communication skills, and group formation techniques. After the peer educators completed training, they conducted group sessions about livelihoods and savings. RH sessions were held alongside vocational counseling sessions. Female genital cutting (FGC) is practiced as a rite of passage in over half of Kenya’s districts. Kenyan nongovernmental agency Maendeleo Ya Wanawake (MYWO) has long conducted community sensitization focused on discouraging this practice. In 1996, MYWO began implementing the “alternative rite” (AR) intervention in sensitized communities. Girls participating in AR receive family life education in seclusion, followed by a public graduation ceremony recognizing them as adults. They are not cut as part of the ceremony. In 2000, the Population Council carried out an assessment of the AR program that sought to identify the impact of MYWO’s activities on knowledge …
