Water gain in the brain consequent to hyponatremia is counteracted by mechanisms that initially include a compensatory displacement of liquid from the interstitial space to cerebrospinal fluid and systemic circulation and subsequently an active reduction in cell water accomplished by extrusion of intracellular osmolytes to reach osmotic equilibrium. Potassium (K⁺), chloride (Cl^–), amino acids, polyalcohols, and methylamines all contribute to volume regulation, with a major contribution of ions at the early phase and of organic osmolytes at the late phase of the regulatory process. The National Public Health Performance Standards Program (NPHPSP) has developed performance standards measurement instruments, based on the 10 "Essential Services of Public Health" that are being tested in several states. This article is a report on the face and content validity of the instrument designed for local public health systems. Judgments about the face validity of the standards were obtained in a survey of local public health systems that had used the instrument in a test state. This study investigated the effectiveness of vocal hygiene training in improving knowledge and self-rated characteristics of the voice. The subjects were 10 kindergarten through third grade school teachers who received 4 half-hour sessions of vocal hygiene training in the experimental group. Eleven kindergarten through third grade school teachers served as control subjects and received no training. The teachers were placed in subgroups dependent upon their reports of experiencing voice difficulties or not experiencing voice difficulties. The purpose of the research is to examine the family experience of dementia caregiving and design an educational intervention to assist family members in the caregiving role. Stress results when a caregiver confronts environmental demands (dementia behaviors) that threaten personal well-being. The perception of threat is the process of primary stress appraisal. Caregivers evaluate coping options, a process of secondary stress appraisal. Positive secondary appraisal (view the situation as amenable to change) has the potential to trigger re-appraisal of the primary threat, and to reduce overall stress.

This study determined if any of four endodontic solutions would have a softening effect on resorcinol-formalin paste and if there were any differences in the solvent action between these solutions. Resorcinol, formalin and zinc oxide were mixed and allowed to set for 30 days. The solutions tested were 0.9% sodium chloride, 5.25% NaOCl, chloroform and Endosolv R. Seven samples per solution were tested and an additional seven samples served as controls. The current controversy over federal funding for research involving stem cells derived from very early embryos is situated between two other equally difficult issues: abortion and cloning. As Laurie Zoloth (2002) says, talk about stem cells is "directly proximate" to the abortion debate. Nonetheless, a settled position in favor of abortion rights does not necessarily lead to support for research that involves the death of embryos. Nor should opposition to reproductive cloning necessarily entail opposition to therapeutic cloning. The aim of the study was to investigate the bacteriological effects of different diets by Streptococcus mutans counts on 50 Swiss albino rats inoculated with Streptococcus mutans CCUG 6519 serotype c. A powdered form of standard basal diet meeting rats' nutritional needs was used in combination with diets containing different percentages of starch, sucrose and xylitol for 90 days. To find the volume of irregular cavities in cadavers, many researchers have used different methods including filling with any fluid and calculating the volume by usingcomplex geometrical formulas. All of these have some difficulties and disadvantages. In this paper, filling cavities with mercury is presented as an alternative method for volume estimation of the cavities. The volumes of 22 right cardiac ventricles were found by using mercury in 27-34 week-old fetuses. The method was proposed as an easy and sensitive method for volume estimation and comparison of the cavities in the cadaver.

The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between total homocysteine levels and premature coronary artery disease events. To investigate the effect of low dietary zinc intake and experimental diabetes (IDDM) on the zinc and carbohydrate metabolism, 8-week-old male wealing normal albino (Wistar) rats were fed diets containing either adequate (54mg/kg) or low zinc (1mg/kg) quantities for one week. The aim of this study was to determine the histological changes of the thoracic aorta in rats fed on alcohol for a period of 24 weeks. Twenty male Wistar rats were divided into two groups. The ethanol group (n=10) was fed on a modified liquid diet (MLD) containing 7.2% ethanol for 24 weeks. The control group (n=10) was fed on MLD without ethanol throughout the experiment. We showed that butter suppresses metabolic responses to endotoxin in Wistar rats. Responses included increases in plasma caeruloplasmin and liver zinc and protein concentrations, and decreases in plasma zinc and albumin concentration. However, butter lost its suppressive effect at dietary concentrations above 90g/kg diet. The present study examined whether this phenomenon was due to the total dietary cholesterol intake rather than the intrinsic fatty acid composition of butter. This study was carried out to determine whether certain clinical, laboratory, or radiological parameters predispose patients to develop FIRDA in acute situations. Charts of patients in whom FIRDA was detected on an EEG on hospital admission were reviewed. Demographic data, clinical history, physical findings, laboratory results and neuroimaging studies were recorded. Sixty-eight patients with a median age of 56 years were included. Chronic illness was present in 78%. Normal background activity was observed in only 17% of the cases. Epileptiform discharges were uncommon. Surface and build-up region doses of 6, 15 and 25 MV photon beams were investigated for several clinical setup parameters. Evaluated setups included open fields, physical wedge (PW) fields, virtual wedge (VW) fields and blocked fields. The effects of field size, acrylic block tray, source-to-surface distance (SSD) and off-axis distance on surface dose were determined for each of these setups. Siemens Mevatron MD2 (6-15 MV) and Mevatron-KD2 (6-25 MV) linear accelerators were used to measure both the surface and build-up region doses. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of asthma, asthma-like symptoms and atopy in the adult population of the city of Elazığ. A specific questionnaire, adopted from the European Community Respiratory Health Survey including social status and smoking tendencies of people was filled in by 2454 randomly chosen (1088 male, 1366 female) subjects. The cumulative prevalence of asthma and asthma-like symptoms for males, females and the general population was 22.0%, 28.7%, and 25.7%, respectively. The in vitro esterase activity of carbonic anhydrase on total esterase activity level was investigated. This effect was obtained by subtracting the value of net esterase from the value of total esterase in sera with normal (95.22 ± 8.87) and high glucose levels (208.58 ± 87.90). The aim of the present prospective study was to investigate the influence of smoking on ultrasonographically determined thyroid gland volume and echo-texture in a large randomly selected group of 500 healthy subjects of both sexes from a non-iodine deficient area. An accurate ultrasonographic technique and the Brunn method were used to determine the thyroid volume of each volunteer. The examiners had no idea of the smoking habits of the volunteers. To present the visual outcome of patients with solar retinopathy and evaluate the effects of treatment on the visual prognosis. One hundred and eighty-eight patients with visual disturbances applied for ophthalmic examination following the solar eclipse on August 11, 1999. All patients underwent routine ophthalmologic examination; those with fundus changes also underwent fundus fluorescein angiography, Amsler grid and computerised perimetry.
