Between- Or Within-Culture Variation? Culture Group As A Moderator Of The Relations Between Individual Differences And Resource Allocation Preferences, Gustavo Carlo, Scott C. Roesch, George P. Knight, Silvia H. Koller

Recent theoretical discussion of the influence of between- and within-culture factors on social behaviors suggests that both approaches may be useful. The present study was designed to investigate the joint influence of sociocultural (between-group) and individual (within-group) factors on resource allocation preferences. Brazilian (n = 166) and European-American (n = 99) children with ages ranging from 37 to 140 months were administered a resource allocation task, which consisted of distributing rewards to themselves or to an acquaintance. As expected, individualistic resource allocation preferences decreased with age, whereas competitive and cooperative resource allocation preferences increased with age. Thrombolytic Therapy For Acute Myocardial Infarction In The Elderly, Bernard Bun-Lap Wong, Wai-Hong Chen

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Acute myocardial infarction (MI) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. Patients ≥75 years constitute up to 30% of the acute MI population and are associated with a 50% in-hospital mortality. Thrombolytic therapy was shown in a metaanalysis of 9 largest randomized controlled trials to reduce 35-day mortality. However, the benefit was observed mainly among patients < 75 years old. For patients ≥ 75 years, the 35-day mortality was 24.3% in those treated with thrombolytic therapy and 25.3% in the placebo group, a difference not reaching statistical significance.

Background: Limited data are available on physicians’ accuracy in coding for their services. The purpose of this study was to determine the current procedural terminology (CPT) evaluation and management coding accuracy of family physicians and define demographic variables associated with coding accuracy.

Methods: Six hundred randomly selected active members of the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians were sent six hypothetical progress notes of office visits along with a demographic survey. The study group assigned CPT evaluation and management codes to each of the progress notes and completed the demographic survey. Five expert coders also assigned codes to each of the …

Background:

This report encompasses an effort to look at the number of children born to HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and/or AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) infected parents during the years 1991 to 1999 in Nevada.

According to the Healthy People 2000 (HP 2000) Review for the years 1998- 1999, infants of untreated or undetected HIV positive women have been identified as a distinct population at risk for contracting the virus that causes AIDS.

Risks associated with home visiting have been acknowledged in the nursing literature since the 19th century, yet there is not a well-defined body of literature on this subject. The present study was designed to assess the impact of two dispositional variables, psychological reactance and desire for control, on individual perceptions of common elements of psychological change. These common elements represent cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects of psychological change. The study tested whether individuals with different levels of psychological reactance and desire for control systematically differed in their perception of the importance of elements relevant to psychological change. Participants (N = 420) completed three self-report assessment instruments: (a) the Common Elements of Change Questionnaire, (b) Hong's Psychological Reactance Scale, and (c) the Desirability of Control Scale. This background paper considered the evolution of quality evaluation efforts, tracing their development from early initiatives to keep track of patients after surgery through the various guidelines, surveys, and measurement tools currently in use. It looked at both quality assurance and quality improvement strategies, highlighting the different philosophies that guide them. The paper examined the roles of purchasers, providers, consumers, and governments in furthering a quality agenda. Both regulatory and voluntary approaches were assessed.

This background paper reviewed the role played by the health care safety net in serving the nation's uninsured, underinsured, and indigent populations as well as those Americans who experience problems in obtaining access to health care. Against the backdrop of the March 2000 Institute of Medicine report, America's Health Care Safety Net: Intact But Endangered, the paper examined the recurrent choice in U.S. health policy between underwriting public insurance and subsidizing direct provision of health care. Reengineering was a management tactic designed to reduce costs and increase efficiencies in the work place. Although many hospitals reported reengineering efforts were a priority during the latter part of the 1990s, little research has been done to determine the effects of reengineering on cost and quality performance indicators.

This research studied a large regional medical center located in southwest Michigan, which implemented patient-focused care redesign. Within this medical center, ten separate and distinct patient care departments were studied over a 5-year period. Objective: Conversion disorder presents differently in various cultures. The commonest symptoms in the Asian subcontinent may be very different from those seen in Western Hemisphere. This causes some difficulty in making a diagnosis while using DSM-IV and ICD-10.METHOD: This study searched inpatient records for the last 10 years at the Aga Khan University and collected some demographic data as well as assessed the phenomenology of conversion disorder in the patient population.Results: We found unresponsiveness to be the most common symptom in this sample thus not exactly fitting the DSM-IV/ICD-10 picture.CONCLUSION: We observed that current criteria of conversion disorder as stated …

In addition to the soluble response, many invertebrates control bacterial infections by means of phagocytosis or melanotic encapsulation. In some insects, Escherichia coli growth is reported to be inhibited by aggregation/encapsulation. Soluble and phagocytic responses to bacterial challenge have been reported in ticks, but evidence of an aggregation/encapsulation response was reported only for inanimate (araldite) implants. This study was done to determine how ticks control infection by E. coli. Ticks were challenged by direct inoculation of bacteria into the hemocoel cavity. Using plate counts, no viable E. coli were detected I hour post-inoculation. A direct fluorescence assay (DF A) …
