Fibrinogen and fibrin play important, overlapping roles in blood clotting, fibrinolysis, cellular and matrix interactions, inflammation, wound healing, and neoplasia. These events are regulated to a large extent by fibrin formation itself and by complementary interactions between specific binding sites on fibrin(ogen) and extrinsic molecules including proenzymes, clotting factors, enzyme inhibitors, and cell receptors. Fibrinogen is comprised of two sets of three polypeptide chains termed Aα, Bβ, and γ, that are joined by disulfide bridging within the N-terminal E domain. The molecules are elongated 45-nm structures consisting of two outer D domains, each connected to a central E domain by …

Different aspects of DNA affinity chromatography such as DNA complexity heparin elution, the Bi-column method and the oligonucluotide trapping method were studied. The complexity (length) of a DNA sequence attached to an affinity chromatography column affects column retention, and the purity of transcription factors obtained. T18: A18 tailed DNA affinity columns were better suited for purification of most of the transcription factors than either the discrete or concatemeric DNA affinity columns. 肌筋膜疼痛症候群(MPS)以激痛點(MTrP)的存在為其特徵，局部抽搐反應(LTR)和自發性電位活動(SEA)是激痛點之兩個很重要的客觀性指標。激痛點的基本單元，就是肌筋膜激痛點小點(MTrP locus)，它包含了感覺性成分(感覺小點；或LTR小點)與運動性成分(活動小點；或SEA小點)。在動物實驗中發現，在高於支配該肌肉之下運動神經元處截斷其脊髓後，兔子的LTR在脊髓休克期時會被暫時性地壓抑，可見LTR顯然經由脊髓來做調節。在激痛點裡的SEA，是因為乙醯膽素(Acetylcholine)過量釋放所引起的不正常之終板電位(endplate potentials)。不過，由於SEA的出現率在脊髓截斷後並沒有很明顯的改變，SEA應該不是經由脊髓來做調節。本研究收集了十四隻紐西蘭成兔，來評估所支配之神經被切除後，其對激痛點的SEA所造成的影響。我們在兔子坐骨神經切除前、切除之後、切除後第一天、切除後第二天、切除後第一週、切除後第二週、切除後第三週與切除後第一個月，分別追蹤兔子股二頭肌上SEA的發生率。發現SEA在神經切除後還持續存在約一天，但從切除後第二天開始，SEA就消失不見了，直到本研究追蹤結束時。由本研究的結果可知，SEA的發生，神經脈衝傳導的神經性因素是比較不重要，而神經介質傳導的內分泌性因素則相當重要。此研究更進一步證實肌筋膜激痛點裡的SEA，是運動終板機能障礙所導致的一種局部性的現象。

A Survey Of In-Line Skaters' Injuries In Taipei, Teh-Ken Yang, Lin-Fen Hsieh

In-line skating has grown to become a popular sport and recreational activity in the past few years. This study was designed to survey the sport injuries in in-line skaters and its relating factors. 240 subjects (136 males and 104 females) were sampled from two public parks in Taipei (Ta-An Park and Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall), which are the most representative of the in-line skaters’ population in Taipei city. Ages ranged from 3 to 50 (mean, 17) years old. 126 (52%) subjects had skated for more than one year, and 159 (66.5%) had injury while skating.Data collected revealed four most commonly …

The purposes of this study were to explore the feasibility of exercise training during hemodialysis for end-stage renal failure patients, and the effect of exercise training on cardiopulmonary endurance, blood and biochemical changes. The purposive sample was recruited from a medical center in southern Taiwan. A total of 20 hemodialysis patients underwent a 30-50 minutes stationary bicycle training ( 3 times a week for 12 weeks ) within the first two hours of the hemodialysis period. This study evaluates changes in patterns of acute psychiatric hospitalization under Massachusetts' Medicaid-funded Mental Health and Substance Abuse (MMHSA) carve-out program. The data consists of the Case Mix Database, for FY 1996 and FY 1997, compiled by the state's Division of Health Care Finance and Policy, on all acute hospital episodes in the state. Key comparisons involve hospital utilization during the nine months preceding the 1996 implementation of the current expanded carve-out program and the subsequent 15 months of its implementation. The Treatment Of Canine Demodicosis With The Oral Application Of Ivermectin, Nuvee Prapasarakul, Nlin Arya, Chaiyot Tarnrattana, Supote Methiyapun, Manop Muaungyai

Canine demodicosis was treated with Ivermectin (Ivomec®) given orally at a dosage of 0.6 mg/kg to seven dogs. Three of the dogs were from a city pound, the others were privately owned. Six dogs had generalized lesions and one had localized ones. A complete blood count and their biochemical profiles were monitored each month. After treatment, the dogs recovered and had no demodectic mange in the multiple skin scrapings. The duration of treatment was 5-9 weeks (mean= 6.7 weeks). No adverse drug effects were seen during treatment and all blood values remained within the normal range.

A six-year old bull (Bos indicus) was found to have hypospadia (congenital rupture of the ventral aspect of the penile urethra). The testes were a normal size and the penis slightly hypoplastic. Karyotype obtained from the conventional staining of chromosomes and GTG- and RBA- bandings revealed a normal make-up, of 60 XY male chromosomes. The levels of serum testoterone, estradiol and progesterone were all within the normal range. Based on the phenotypic abnormality and the karyotypic findings, this bull can be classified as a male, pseudohermaphrodite.

The events of the last decade have transformed health care delivery as well as professional performance expectations. To facilitate understanding, the environmental considerations that surround these changes are traced and discussed. A direct linkage is made to clinical social work practice and suggestions for the future survival of the profession is discussed. The Role Of Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus (Prrsv) In The Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex (Prdc), Roongroje Thanawongnuwech

Concurrent bacterial infections of the respiratory tract in porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV)-infected pigs is a major problem for the swine industry and may involve various factors. This review manuscript discusses the role of pulmonary macrophages, which are affected by PRRSV. The macrophage's phagocytic and bactericidal ability is altered by the PRRSV infection as is pulmonary clearance. PRRSV also induces apoptosis and macrophages cell lysis leading to an increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial infection, and the syndrome called porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC). Prevention and control strategies for these concurrent infections are briefly discussed.

The objective of this study was to determine the reproductive efficiency of lactating dairy cows by using a synchronized ovulation program (Ovsynch). Multiparous, crossbred, Holstein-Friesian cows (40-70 d postpartum; n=60) were divided into a control group (n=30) and an Ovsynch group (n=30), according to their calving dates. Cows in the control group were artificially inseminated according to the AM/PM rule following the detection of standing estrus. The Ovsynch cows were injected with 100 μg GnRH at various stages of the estrous cycle on the first day of the program. Seven days later, they were injected with 500 μg PGF2α, followed …

This paper reports surgical resection of a dentigerous cyst from a thoroughbred colt that had persistent seromucous discharge through a small opening at the base of the right pinna for one month.Healing was uneventful after the cyst, as well as the fistulous tract, was totally removed. An aberranttooth of molar liked appearance was found within the cyst.

Background and Purpose. Fear-avoidance behavior contributes to chronic low back pain. The purpose of this study was to determine whether patient education on fear-avoidance behavior added to conventional physical therapy would have significant effects on return to work status in contrast to a comparison group with only physical therapy intervention. Return to work status was measured by the length of time from the initial injury to the subject’s return to work on regular duty.

Background From studies of genetic polymorphisms and the rate of progression from human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), it appears that the strongest susceptibility is conferred by the major-histocompatibility-complex (MHC) class I type HLA-B*35,Cw*04 allele. However, cytotoxic T-lymphocyte responses have been observed against HIV-1 epitopes presented by HLA-B*3501, the most common HLA-B*35 subtype. We examined subtypes of HLA-B*35 in five cohorts and analyzed the relation of structural differences between HLA-B*35 subtypes to the risk of progression to AIDS.
