Results from our laboratory have suggested a pathway involving angiotensin II type 1 (AT₁) receptors and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in angiogenesis induced by electrical stimulation. The present study investigated if similar mechanisms underlie the angiogenesis induced by short-term exercise training. Seven days before training and throughout the training period, male Sprague-Dawley rats received either captopril or losartan in their drinking water. Rats underwent a 3-day treadmill training protocol. The tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscles were harvested under anesthesia and lightly fixed in formalin (vessel density) or frozen in liquid nitrogen (VEGF expression). Mental Health Needs Of Tanf Recipients, Layne K. Stromwall

This paper reports findings of a study of female Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) and non-recipients ages 18-40, receiving behavioral health services in the rural Southwest in 1998-9. TANF recipients (N = 119) were more likely to be seriously mentally ill than non-recipients (N = 370), suggesting that a subgroup of TANF recipients may face significant barriers to employment given the new TANF regulations. The author argues that responsibility for recognizing the needs of TANF recipients for behavioral health services is shared by both the public welfare and behavioral health systems. The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

One hundred clinically healthy Taiwanease soft-shelled turtles (Pelodiscus sinensis) were sampled by blood sampling and cloacal swabing. Samples were first cultured in a pre-enrichment media and then selective isolation was performed for vibrios on Thiosulfate-Citrate-Bile salts-Sucrose agar (TCBS). Species of the isolated vibrios were identified by standard biochemical procedures. A total of 146 vibrio isolates were found in 83 out of 100 cloacal swabs (83%), whereas none were found in the 50 blood samples. Isolates were identified as Vibrio fluvialis (26.04%), V. anguillarum (21.23%), V. furnissii (18.49%), V. parahaemolyticus (18.49%), Vibrio spp. (6.85%), V. damsela (5.48%) and V. metschnikovii (3.42%). …

Direct and indirect arterial blood pressure measurements, by the oscillometric method, were carried out on twelve anesthetized healthy tigers during claw amputation. There were seven males and five females aged (mean ± SD) 4 ± 1 months and weighing (mean ± SD) 18 ± 11 kg. Anesthesia was induced using intramuscular ketamine, in conjunction with xylazine and atropine sulphate, and maintained by halothane inhalation. Heart rates, direct and indirect systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressures were measured at 5 min intervals using 3 oscillometric monitors. This paper addresses breast cancer diagnosis problem as a pattern classification problem. Specifically, the problem is studied using Wisconsin-Madison breast cancer data set. Fuzzy rules are generated from the input-output relationship so that the diagnosis becomes easier and transparent for both patients and physicians. For each class, at least one training pattern is chosen as the prototype, provided (a) the maximum membership of the training pattern is in the given class, and (b) among all the training patterns, the neighborhood of this training pattern has the least fuzzy-rough uncertainty in the given class. Noise in the hospital environment can have negative effects on both patients and hospital staff. Unwanted noise can be disturbing and often annoying thus, interfering with patients' sleep and obstructing work performance of the hospital staff. A research study was conducted in the hospital unit to identify and develop methods of intervention for intermittent noise and their source. Routine staff work activity generated noise levels above EPA hospital noise recommendations. A sound level meter and video camera was used to capture noise between the work-shifts. Maternal And Child Reports Of Behavioral Compensation In Response To Safety Equipment Usage, David Dilillo, George Tremblay

Objective: To assess maternal and child risk compensation behaviors in response to several commonly used safety measures.

Methods: We administered a previously validated self-report measure of risk tolerance to a total of 151 mothers and their children in grades 3–7. Mothers indicated the level of risk they would permit their child to assume; children were questioned regarding the degree of physical risk they would typically assume while unsupervised by an adult. Participating families were randomly assigned to conditions in which safety equipment either was or was not present during assessments of risk tolerance.

This site visit examined urban safety-net concerns in Denver and rural safety-net issues in three communities in the eastern part of Colorado. The Denver segment featured Denver Health, an integrated health system that provides a continuum of services to diverse vulnerable populations. It explored delivery and financing issues for the system itself and in relation to payers, providers, and consumers (particularly through Community Voices) in its catchment area. This site visit took federal participants to Wisconsin, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of welfare reform. This site visit focused on Wisconsin Works (W-2), a statewide effort to reduce the state's welfare caseload and send clients to work. In particular, site visitors examined welfare reform policy, service delivery, and financing issues in Milwaukee, at that time the home of 85 percent of W-2 participants. Site visit participants heard from state officials, private-sector representatives, researchers, and advocates on the structure of W-2, its operating policies, and the effects of program implementation on low-income families. Background: Communication about end of life, including advance care planning, life-sustaining therapies, palliative care, and end-of-life options, is critical for the clinical management of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients. The empirical evidence base for this communication has not been systematically examined.
Objective: To support evidence-based communication guidance by (1) analyzing the scope and nature of research on health communication about end of life for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; and (2) summarizing resultant recommendations.

This paper describes the Medicare coverage process for emerging technologies and the ways it has changed over time. Issues addressed include both the national coverage process and local medical review policies, which account for 90 percent of the coverage determinations. The paper also includes a discussion of the relationship between the coverage process and technology assessment, payment systems and the ongoing debate over coverage criteria and levels of evidence.

Current research suggests that 36% of American women are considered overweight. Women who are overweight by definition are at risk for major health problems as well as altered levels of self-esteem. A correlational design was utilized to examine the following null hypothesis: There is no relationship between body weight and levels of self-esteem in overweight women. Nola Pender's Health Promotion Model was the theoretical framework used to guide this study. The sample consisted of 42 women who were overweight by definition. To elucidate the signal transduction chain mediating circadian clock control, this work focuses on the isolation of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii mutants which are defective in circadian gene expression. In a previous study, the reporter gene ARS2 encoding the arylsulfatase enzyme was fused to the promoter of the circadian-regulated CABII-1 gene and transformed into the Chlamydomonas nucleus. The ble marker was introduced into the genome of this transformant via insertional mutagenesis to generate mutants defective in circadian CABII-1 expression. Neural tube defects (NTDs) are among the most serious birth defects affecting approximately 4,000 pregnancies in the United States each year. More than one third of these pregnancies are spontaneously aborted. Thus, about 2,500 infants per year are born with an NTD. Research spanning two decades has shown that women who consume folic acid- containing supplements have 50% to 75% fewer infants with NTDs than women who do not consume folic acid supplements. The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify the known modifiable risk factors for osteoporosis in the college population. Pender's Theory of Health Promotion served as the theoretical framework for this study. The research question was as follows : What preventive behaviors are college students participating in that will increase their risk of osteoporosis? Risk factors were measured using the Osteoporosis Lifestyle Survey, a tool with face validity. The sample population (N = 121) consisted of students, ages 17 to 30 years, who were attending a small southern university and who submitted the questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using …
