Adolescent Opinions About Reducing Help-Seeking Barriers And Increasing Engagement., Coralie Wilson Dec 2000

Adolescent Opinions About Reducing Help-Seeking Barriers And Increasing Engagement., Coralie Wilson

Coralie J Wilson

Effective mental illness prevention programs are important for the safety of youth and adolescents. Research suggests that programs should facilitate appropriate help-seeking by lowering help-seeking barriers. This study used focus groups to obtain high school student opinions about actual help-seeking behaviors, reducing adolescent help-seeking barriers, raising sensitive issues with adolescents, and increasing appropriate help-source engagement. Transcript analysis revealed several themes. Relationship and trust were key approach factors for current help-seeking. Memories of successful prior helping episodes were also important. Education about appropriate help-seeking, presented in ways consistent with those currently used by adolescents (e.g., through peer networks), might reduce help-seeking …

Age And Neuropsychological Status Following Exposure To Violent Nonimpact Acceleration Forces In Mvas, James Sweeney, Andrew Johnson Dec 2000

Age And Neuropsychological Status Following Exposure To Violent Nonimpact Acceleration Forces In Mvas, James Sweeney, Andrew Johnson

Andrew M. Johnson

Performance on the Halstead-ReitanNeuropsychological Test Battery (HRB) was analyzed for 33 ind viduals, aged 20 to 69, who had been subjected to violent aceeleration forces in motor vehicle accidents . Age was considered as a continuous variable and correlated with single and compos ite HRB measures. With the one exception of the Left Neuropsychological Deficit Scale (NDS) score, agere lated de cline was consistently demonstrated by com positeHRB scores (i.e., Gen eralNDS, Right NDS, Level of Performance NDS, Pathognomonic SignNDS, Pattern NDS, Right-Left Differ enceNDS, and Halstead Impairment Index). In contrast, most single non-composite HRB measures did not refleet a …

Assessment Of Side Effects In Patients With Chronic Hepatitis C Receiving Combination Therapy, Donna Zucker, Barry Miller Dec 2000

Assessment Of Side Effects In Patients With Chronic Hepatitis C Receiving Combination Therapy, Donna Zucker, Barry Miller

Donna M. Zucker

This purpose of this descriptive study is to review the adverse effects of combination therapy, interferon alfa-2b and ribavirin, in a sample of patients with chronic hepatitis C who were part of a larger multi-center trial. The sample (n=13) was drawn from one hepatology practice in the northeastern U.S. This secondary analysis reported sums, frequencies, means and standard deviations for the sample. Patients who received 600 mg. ribavirin per day in addition to interferon alfa-2B (Arm A) showed a mean of 9.5 different types of side effects. Patients who received 1000-1200 mg of ribavirin in addition to interferon alfa-2B (Arm …

Gustavo D. Aguirre, VMD, PhD

Purpose. To develop an effective therapy for treating glycosaminoglycan (GAG) storage in mucopolysaccharidosis VII (MPS VII) retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in vitro using adenoviral vector mediated human ß-glucuronidase cDNA (Ad-GUSB) transfer. Methods. Ad-GUSB was used to infect RPE at confluency. The transduction condition was optimized varying time of infection and number of infectious particles. The ß-glucuronidase (GUSB) activity was measured in transduced cells and media using a fluorogenic substrate. The GAG profiles were examined by metabolically labeling RPE with 35 Na 2 SO 4. Results. Transduced RPE, irrespective of species or disease status, expressed a high level of ß-glucuronidase. The …

Suicidal Ideation And Help-Negation: Not Just Hopelessness Or Prior Help., Coralie J. Wilson Dec 2000

Suicidal Ideation And Help-Negation: Not Just Hopelessness Or Prior Help., Coralie J. Wilson

Frank Deane

Few distressed young people seek professional psychological help and little is known about what sources of help young people seek for different problems. In suicidal youth, poor help-seeking may be exacerbated by the process of help-negation. The current study is the first of a larger program of PhD research developed and led by the second author. In the current study, three hundred and two undergraduate university students completed a questionnaire measuring suicidal ideation, hopelessness, prior help-seeking experience, and help-seeking intentions. Participants indicated they would seek help from different sources of help for different types of problems, but friends were consistently …

Serum Leptin Levels And Anthropometric Correlates In Ache Amerindians Of Eastern Paraguay, Richard G. Bribiescas Dec 2000

Serum Leptin Levels And Anthropometric Correlates In Ache Amerindians Of Eastern Paraguay, Richard G. Bribiescas

Richard G. Bribiescas

Leptin is a recently discovered peptide hor- mone secreted primarily from adipocytes in humans and other mammals; it is a reflection of fat stores, and has been associated with reproductive function. However, few leptin measurements are available from nonindustrialized popula- tions, including contemporary hunter/gatherer communities undergoing the transition to sedentary agriculture. This in- vestigation reports single-sample serum leptin measure- ments in healthy Ache Amerindian males (n 􏱕 21; average age, 32.8 􏱣 3.4 SE) and females (n 􏱕 12; average age, 31.3 􏱣 4.3) in eastern Paraguay. Ache leptin concentrations were much lower than in industrialized populations, although significant sexual …

Role Of Ampa And Glur5 Kainate Receptors In The Development And Expression Of Amygdala Kindling In The Mouse, Michael A. Rogawski, Philip S. Kurzman, Shun-Ichi Yamaguchi, He Li Dec 2000

Role Of Ampa And Glur5 Kainate Receptors In The Development And Expression Of Amygdala Kindling In The Mouse, Michael A. Rogawski, Philip S. Kurzman, Shun-Ichi Yamaguchi, He Li

Michael A. Rogawski

The role of AMPA and GluR5-containing kainate receptors in the development and expression of amygdala kindling was examined using the selective 2,3-benzodiazepine AMPA receptor antagonist GYKI 52466 [(1-(4-aminophenyl)-4-methyl-7,8-methylenedioxy-5H-2, 3-benzodiazepine] and the decahydroisoquinoline mixed AMPA receptor and GluR5 kainate receptor antagonist LY293558 {(3S,4aR,6R, 8aR)-6-[2-(1(2)H-tetrazole-5-yl)ethyl]decahydroisoquinoline- 3-carboxy lic acid)}. Administration of GYKI 52466 (5-40 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) and LY293558 (10-40 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) prior to daily kindling stimulation in mice produced a dose-dependent suppression of the rate of development of behavioral kindled seizure activity and reduced the duration of the stimulation-induced electrographic afterdischarge. In drug-free stimulation sessions after the initial drug-treatment sessions, there was an …

Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire-Brief: Factor Structure And Convergent Validity In Inpatient Adolescents, Seth R. Axelrod, Carlos M. Grilo, Charles A. Sanislow, Thomas H. Mcglashan Dec 2000

Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire-Brief: Factor Structure And Convergent Validity In Inpatient Adolescents, Seth R. Axelrod, Carlos M. Grilo, Charles A. Sanislow, Thomas H. Mcglashan

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

We examined the internal consistency, factor structure, and validity of the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire-Brief (SPQ-B). Two hundred thirty-seven psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents were administered the SPQ-B and a battery of well-established self-report instruments. The SPQ-B demonstrated adequate internal consistency. Exploratory factor analysis provided mixed support for the SPQ-B 3-factor structure of interpersonal deficits, cognitive-perceptual deficits, and disorganization. The Interpersonal and Cognitive-Perceptual subscales demonstrated convergent and discriminant relationships with other measures of interpersonal impairment and cognitive abnormalities. We concluded that the SPQ-B is a promising measure for evaluating schizotypal personality disorder features, specifically interpersonal and cognitiveperceptual deficits, with adolescent psychiatric inpatients.

This simple template contains the headings for a classic history and physical examination report. Clerks and residents on our surgical team are encouraged to use it or a similar system. It is vital to the learning process that you reach a conclusion about a patient's illness and formulate a plan independently. You should verify your findings and care with somebody senior to you on the team.
