Unfortunately, a great deal of the talk about "commodification" has been clumsy and sloppy. The term has been used as a magic bullet, as if saying "But that's commodification!" is the same as having made an argument. In fact, commodification of human persons, human bodies, human labor, human relationships, is a complex matter.

Psychology

Does religious faith influence health? Are religious practices associated with altered risks for morbidity or mortality? Do religious or spiritual individuals tend to enjoy better well-being or mental health across the lifespan? Does spiritual or religious involvement change the way individuals adapt to the demands of chronic illness? This volume brings together some of the leading investigators who have explored these intriguing questions. Though research is in its early phases, the chapters that follow review some of what we have learned and begin to trace the outlines of the many mysteries that remain.

บาดทะยัก (Tetanus) เป็นโรคที่เกิดจากแบคทีเรียชื่อ Clostridium Tetani ซึ่งเป็น Anaerobic bacteria ทำให้เกิดโรคที่มีอาการทารุณต่อผู้ป่วยมาก และยังมีอัตราการตายค่อนข้างสูง แต่เมื่อผู้ป่วยหายแล้ว จะไม่มี Neurological deficit หลงเหลือเลย และข้อที่น่าสนใจอีกประการหนึ่ง คือ Immunization สำหรับโรคบาดทะยัก ได้ผลดีเกือบ 100 เปอร์เซนต์ มีอันตรายจากการฉีดวัคซีนน้อยมาก และราคาถูกมาก แต่เราก็ยังพบผู้ป่วยบาดทะยัก อยู่เสมอในประเทศของเรา

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างปัจจัยส่วนบุคคล สภาพแวดล้อมใน การทำงาน และการได้รับการเสริมสร้างพลังอํานาจในงานของหัวหน้ากลุ่มงานการพยาบาล กับการรับรู้ ความสามารถด้านการจัดการของหัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วย กลุ่มตัวอย่าง คือ หัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วยใน โรงพยาบาลศูนย์ สังกัดกระทรวงสาธารณสุข จํานวน 277 คน \nผลการวิจัยพบว่า หัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วยมีการรับรู้ความสามารถด้านการจัดการโดยรวมอยู่ในระดับสูง ปัจจัยส่วนบุคคล ด้านอายุ ระดับการศึกษา ประสบการณ์ในตําแหน่ง และการได้รับการอบรม ด้านการบริหาร ไม่มีความสัมพันธ์กับการรับรู้ความสามารถด้านการจัดการของหัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วย สภาพแวดล้อมในการทํางาน และการได้รับการเสริมสร้างพลังอํานาจในงานของหัวหน้ากลุ่มงานการพยาบาล มีความสัมพันธ์ทางบวกกับ การรับรู้ความสามารถด้านการจัดการของหัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วยอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .05 (r = .65 และ .43 ตามลำดับ)

การวิจัยครั้งนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาถึงการเปลี่ยนแปลงความรู้และเจตคติของนักเรียนภายหลัง การให้ความรู้และประสบการณ์เกี่ยวกับพิษภัยของบุหรี่ เพื่อส่งเสริมให้มีความรู้และเจตคติในการป้องกันตนเอง จากบุหรี่ กลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นนักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1 โรงเรียนท่าศาลาประสิทธิ์ศึกษา ปีการศึกษา 2541 ทั้งหญิงและชาย จำนวน 474 คน แบ่งเป็นกลุ่มควบคุมและกลุ่มทดลองจำนวน 269 และ 205 คนตามลำดับ กิจกรรมการให้ความรู้ประกอบด้วยการชมวิดีทัศน์ กิจกรรมเกมส์นักข่าว กิจกรรมบทบาทสมมุติเรื่องการปฏิเสธบุหรี่ และกิจกรรมการทดลองทางวิทยาศาสตร์ ประเมินผลโดยใช้แบบสอบถามความรู้และเจตคติ ผลการวิจัยพบว่ากลุ่มทดลองมีค่าความรู้และเจตคติสูงกว่ากลุ่มควบคุมอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ \nหลังการประเมินผล ครั้งที่ 1 และกลุ่มทดลองมีค่าความรู้สูงกว่ากลุ่มควบคุมอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ หลังการติดตามผล 1 ปี ส่วนเจตคติไม่แตกต่างกัน

การวิจัยครั้งนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงพรรณา เพื่อศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างปัจจัยส่วนบุคคล ซึ่งได้แก่ อายุ ระดับการศึกษา รายได้ครอบครัว ความสามารถในการเบิกค่ารักษา อาการวิตกกังวลซึ่งเป็นอุปนิสัย และ อาการวิตกกังวลขณะเผชิญ ของหญิงตั้งครรภ์ที่มีอาการแพ้ท้องอย่างรุนแรง กลุ่มตัวอย่างคือ หญิงตั้งครรภ์ ที่ได้รับการวินิจฉัยว่ามีอาการแพ้ท้องอย่างรุนแรง และได้เข้ารับการรักษาในหอผู้ป่วยสูติกรรม 3 คณะแพทย ศาสตร์ โรงพยาบาลรามาธิบดี ในระหว่างเดือนมีนาคม 2541 ถึง มีนาคม 2543 เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลโดย ใช้แบบสอบถาม วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลด้วยโปรแกรม SPSS. FW Version 7.5 ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ระดับการศึกษา รายได้ครอบครัว ความสามารถในการเบิกค่ารักษาพยาบาลมีความสัมพันธ์ทางลบกับอาการวิตกกังวล ซึ่งเป็นอุปนิสัย อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ อาการวิตกกังวลซึ่งเป็นอุปนิสัยมีความสําคัญทางบวกกับอาการ วิตกกังวลขณะเผชิญอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ ระดับอาการวิตกกังวล ซึ่งเป็นอุปนิสัยและระดับการศึกษา สามารถร่วมกันทำนายอาการวิตกกังวลขณะเผชิญได้ร้อยละ 14.5 อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ ผลการวิจัย ครั้งนี้พยาบาลสามารถนำไปประยุกต์ใช้ในการดูแลหญิงตั้งครรภ์ ซึ่งมีอาการแพ้ท้องอย่างรุนแรง โดยการ ให้ข้อมูลกับหญิงตั้งครรภ์เพื่อลดอาการวิตกกังวล และสามารถตั้งครรภ์ต่อไปได้อย่างมีความสุข

The Correlation Between The Levels Of Education Of Clinical Laboratory Personnel And The Accuracy Of Peripheral Blood Smear Results, Susan J. Leclair

This study correlated the performance accuracy of peripheral blood differentials evaluated by clinical laboratory scientists and clinical laboratory technicians. Fifty-one senior-year students from four clinical laboratory science baccalaureate programs and 37 second-year students from five clinical laboratory technician programs were given 10 peripheral blood differentials to perform. Results were compared to the values assigned by the Rajamaki method of proficiency testing. There was a significant discrepancy in the levels of accuracy between the two cohorts, suggesting that the results of peripheral blood differentials performed by clinical laboratory technicians is suspect. Recent advances in molecular biology enable researchers to understand the basis of breast cancer much better and show that hereditery breast cancer may result from mutations on several specific gene loci including BRCA1, BRCA2, p53, ATM and PTEN. These genes are tumor supressor genes and although their functions are different, they are all involved in the maintenance of genomic stability after DNA damage. Mutations that impair the function of these genes may adversely affect the manner in which DNA damage is processed. The aim of this study was to design a simple method for detecting the amyloid A4 protein in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients who had severe brain trauma caused by traffic or other accidents and to evaluate its diagnostic and prognostic value. For this purpose, a sandwich type ELISA assay was used. A4, a 4kDa protein of 39-43 amino acids, is a metabolic product of a membrane-spanning, 695-770 aa, precursor molecule, the b-amyloid precursor protein (b-APP). The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of various disinfectants in different concentrations against embryonated Toxocara canis eggs. For this purpose, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% iodine, 2% glutaraldehyde, 10% benzalkonium chloride, 7% sodium hypochloride, 1% potassium permanganate, 70% ethyl alcohol, 10% potassium hydroxide and 3% phenol solutions were used as the disinfectants. This study was performed both in vitro and in-vivo. In the in vitro experiment, T. canis eggs were treated with disinfectant solutions in different time intervals, and larval motility was observed under X400 magnification with an inverted microscope. Contradictory results have been reported from various studies regarding the effect of age on susceptibility to oxidative damage. Using different parameters, we carried out a comparative study on the erythrocytes and erythrocyte membranes of healthy elderly and young adults to determine how resistance to oxidative damage is affected by aging. Thin layer chromatography and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under denaturing conditions were used to estimate changes in membrane phospholipids and cytoskeletal proteins, respectively. Our results showed that these components of intact erythrocytes incubated with cumene hydroperoxide (CumOOH), a powerful oxidising agent, remained unchanged in both age groups. The sera collected from 152 sheep older than one year old sheep in various parts of Yozgat Province were tested for Toxoplasma gondii antibodies using the Sabin- Feldman dye test. Out of the 152 sera examined, 69 (45.4%) were seropositive at different dilutions (34 samples at 1/16, 21 at 1/64, 11 at 1/256 and 3 at 1/1024).

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The correlation coefficients divided into direct and indirect effects among ewe weight in the mating period and lambing, birth weight and weaning age of lamb, and weaning weight of Awassi lambs raised in Erzurum conditions were determined in this study. In path analysis, the direct and indirect impact of birth weight and weaning age of lamb on weaning weight were found to be highly significant. Partial correlation and standardized partial regression coefficients among weaning weight, birth weight and weaning age of lamb were also observed to be highly significant.

During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries travelers to the South Seas brought back stories of a Malaysian emotional syndrom called amok, in which a person rushes around in a state of frenzy, recklessly attacking anyone who gets in the way, and impervious to all attempts at restraint. No Western language had a word that meant the same thing as amok, and Westerners were fascinated by this bizarre phenomenon. Fascinated, but not mystified. BACKGROUND: Mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 account for approximately 50% of breast cancer families with more than four affected cases, whereas exonic mutations in p53, PTEN, CHK2 and ATM may account for a very small proportion. It was recently reported that an intronic variant of p53--G13964C--occurred in three out of 42 (7.1%) 'hereditary' breast cancer patients, but not in any of 171 'sporadic' breast cancer control individuals (P = 0.0003). If this relatively frequent occurrence of G13964C in familial breast cancer and absence in control individuals were confirmed, then this would suggest that the G13964C variant plays a role in …

The Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program was launched in October of 1993. At that time, the Center for Survey Research conducted the Massachusetts Tobacco Survey (MTS), a comprehensive survey of adults and teens living in Massachusetts. The purpose of the survey was to collect baseline data on the prevalence of tobacco use among adults and teens in the Commonwealth and on issues related to the likelihood of smoking cessation or initiation. The survey also assessed the prevalence of restrictive smoking policies, and attitudes about tobacco control measures.
