Studies of early-developing consonants (stops, nasals, and glides) in babbling have shown that most of the variance in consonants and their associated vowels, both within and between syllables, is due to a "frame" produced by mandibular oscillation, with very little active contribution from intrasyllabic or intersyllabic tongue movements. In a study of four babbling infants, the prediction that this apparently basic "frame dominance" would also apply to late-developing consonants (fricatives, affricates, and liquids) was tested. With minor exceptions, confirming evidence for both the predicted intrasyllabic and intersyllabic patterns was obtained. Results provide further evidence for the frame dominance conception, but …

Perspectives On Faculty Clinical Practice: Views Of Occupational Therapy Curriculum Chairpersons And Faculty Members, Angela E. Scoggin, Robert W. Gibson, Carolyn Hanson

Objective. This study investigated whether and how faculty clinical practice (FCP) was being implemented in occupational therapy professional education programs.

Method. Chairpersons and faculty members from all accredited entry-level occupational therapy curricula in the United States were asked to complete questionnaires about their involvement in FCP. The chairperson questionnaire consisted of primarily closed-ended questions that addressed the organization of faculty practice within their programs, whereas the faculty questionnaire was primarily open-ended and addressed faculty members’ individual involvement in FCP as well as the perceived benefits and drawbacks. Responses were analyzed for 39 program chairpersons and 136 faculty members were analyzed. …

The cluster determinant 4 (CD4) molecule is a transmembrane glycoprotein. CD4 is essential for normal T helper cell function and plays an important role in T cell development and activation. CD4 is encoded by a single gene located on chromosome 6 in the mouse and chromosome 12 in the human. Both human and murine CD4 genes are divided into ten exons spanning more than 25 kb and have a large non-coding region in the first and third intron. CD4 gene expression is controlled primarily at the transcriptional level during T cell development and activation.

The center of the brain-death and organ transplantation debate in Japan has always been whether whole brain-death should be regarded as the death of a person. However, the debate has not yet been settled in Japanese society. There are four main reasons why it is said that whole brain-death criteria are incompatible with Japanese society. First, they cannot establish a person's death because the Japanese define it not according to medical facts but according to social relationships. The objective of this study was to examine the role of gap junctions in the radiation resistance of thyroid follicles. The question of whether gap junctional intercellular communication plays an important role in the “contact effect”, wherein cells in direct apposition are more resistant to the damaging effects of radiation, has been debated for years. We used the Fischer rat thyroid cell line (FRTL-5) to carry out our experiments. This thesis is divided into two parts: 1) characterization of gap junctional properties in FRTL-5 cells and, 2) exposure of these cells to radiation.

The cardiac correlate of attention is a deceleration in heart rate, controlled by the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system. This has been extensively studied in infants; the findings indicate that this deceleration is affected by a number of factors, several mediated by the vagus nerve. However, the effects of denervation on this response are not known. Studies with adult heart transplant recipients have shown attenuated acceleration in response to stressful mental tasks. Parkinson's disease (P.D.) has long been thought of as a single disorder. Recent research involving neurochemistry, neurophysiology, and detailed analysis of symptoms, have created a basis for questioning the concept that P.D. is a singular disorder. Literature suggests there may be two primary subtypes (with the possibility of others). The two probable subtypes are hyperkinetic, in which tremor is the predominate symptom and akinetic, in which, gait freezing and postural instability predominate.

In both of these pathological manifestations, several investigators have noted cognitive deficits including attention. The differences in symptomotology and neuropathology attributed to these probable subtypes suggest that there …

A primary role of the IGF-II/M6P receptor is to target lysosomal enzymes from the golgi to the lysosomes. This receptor has distinct binding sites for IGF-II and M6P, however, reciprocal interactions between these ligands have been observed (Kiess et al. 1989, 1990). Since IGF-II modulates the routing of cathepsin D in MCF-7 cells by blocking the intracellular binding of cathepsin D to the IGF-II/M6P receptor (De León et al. 1996), we hypothesized that expressing a mutant form of IGF-II that does not bind the IGF-II/M6P receptor will not interfere with lysosomal enzyme trafficking.

การวิจัยนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงบรรยาย เพื่อศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างปัจจัยคัดสรร ได้แก่ อายุ รายได้ครอบครัว จำนวนบุตรที่มีชีวิตอยู่ อายุครรภ์ ประวัติการสูญเสียบุตรในอดีต กับอาการวิตกกังวล และซึมเศร้าภายหลังสูญเสียการตั้งครรภ์ รวมทั้งความสามารถในการทำนายอาการวิตกกังวลและซึมเศร้า จากปัจจัยคัดสรร กลุ่มตัวอย่าง คือ หญิงตั้งครรภ์ซึ่งได้รับการวินิจฉัยจากสูติแพทย์ว่าต้องสิ้นสุด การตั้งครรภ์เพื่อการรักษา เนื่องจากการตั้งครรภ์ไม่มีตัวอ่อน ตัวอ่อนหรือทารกตายในครรภ์ การแท้งค้าง ทารกพิการ หรือมารดาเป็นโรคร้ายแรงที่ไม่สามารถดำเนินการตั้งครรภ์ต่อไปได้ จำนวน 113 ราย ซึ่งมา รับการรักษาที่หอผู้ป่วยสูติกรรม 3 คณะแพทยศาสตร์โรงพยาบาลรามาธิบดี ระหว่างเดือนมกราคม ถึง กันยายน 2542 เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลโดยใช้แบบสอบถาม ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ปัจจัยคัดสรรไม่มีความสัมพันธ์ กับอาการวิตกกังวลภายหลังสูญเสียการตั้งครรภ์ แต่อายุ รายได้ครอบครัว อายุครรภ์ มีความสัมพันธ์ กับอาการซึมเศร้า ภายหลังสูญเสียการตั้งครรภ์อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ อายุครรภ์และรายได้ครอบครัว สามารถร่วมกันทำนายอาการซึมเศร้าภายหลังสูญเสียการตั้งครรภ์ได้ร้อยละ 12.9 อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .01

beta-thalassemia is one of the most common inherited single gene disorder in Pakistan. It is characterized by reduced or absent beta-globin gene expression resulting in abnormal maturation and survival of red blood cells. Serum Cholinesterase Levels In Elephants, Piyarat Subhachalat, Wara Panichkriangkrai, Sittidet Mahasawangkul, Taweepok Angkawanich, Sirintorn Yibchok-A-Nun

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Serum cholinesterase (ChE) levels were determined in adult elephants in the summer, the rainy season and in the winter by a colorimetric method using acetylthiocholine as the substrate. The results showed that ChE levels in adult males were lower than those in adult females, in all three seasons (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the ChE level was at it’s highest in the rainy season, falling lower inมthe summer and lower again in the winter season. The difference was found in both sexes. This study is the first report on the measurement of ChE levels in elephants.

Cushing's syndrome is a condition in which hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex produce excessive amount of cortisol or ACTH. Cortisol hormones effect fat, protein and glucose metabolism. Staphylococcus aureus frequently colonizes the airways of patients with compromised airway defenses (e.g., cystic fibrosis [CF] patients) for extended periods. Persistent and relapsing infections may be related to live S. aureus bacteria actively residing inside epithelial cells. In this study, we infected a respiratory epithelial cell line, which was derived from a CF patient, with S. aureus RN6390. Internalization of S. aureus was found to be time and dose dependent and could be blocked by cytochalasin D. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that internalized bacteria resided within endocytic vacuoles without any evidence of lysosomal fusion in a 24-h period. The results …

Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory disease of the axial skeleton. Spinal ankylosis reduces vertebral flexibility, exacerbates osteoporotic change, and leads to a loss of the biomechanical function of the spine. Thus, even small impacts might cause vertebral fracture or damage of the spinal cord in the patients with ankylosing spondylitis.This retrospective study included 11 patients with ankylosing spondylitis who were admitted to a hos-pital between 1991 and 1999 for rehabilitative service after spinal cord injury. Of these patients, 10 were male, and one female. Average age was 46.3 ± 14.3 years. Falls accounted for injuries in six patients, traffic accidents …
