There is growing interest in health promotion, wellness, and the prevention of secondary conditions among people with disabilities. In rural areas where there is limited access to health care providers knowledgeable about disability, managing one’s own health and wellness and using strategies to prevent secondary conditions may be particularly important (Offner, Seekins & Clark, 1992; Seekins, 1992; Center for Disability Policy and Research, 1995; Seekins, Clay & Ravesloot, 1994; Seekins, et al., 1999).

Intestinal Lesions Caused By A Strain Of Chlamydia Suis In Weanling Pigs Infected At 21 Days Of Age, Douglas G. Rogers, Arthur A. Andersen

The objective of this study was to determine whether a strain of Chlamydia suis shown previously to be an intestinal pathogen in gnotobiotic piglets could cause diarrhea and intestinal lesions in young weanling pigs. Pigs from 2 sows were randomly assigned to 2 groups. Group 1 included 13 pigs that were weaned at 24 hours of age and then housed in isolator units and fed milk replacer and unmedicated starter ration. Group 2 included 8 pigs that nursed their respective sows, consumed unmedicated starter ration, and were weaned at 21 days of age. Ten pigs in group 1 and 6 …

The objective of this study was to examine the role of gap junctions in the radiation resistance of thyroid follicles. The question of whether gap junctional intercellular communication plays an important role in the “contact effect”, wherein cells in direct apposition are more resistant to the damaging effects of radiation, has been debated for years. We used the Fischer rat thyroid cell line (FRTL-5) to carry out our experiments. This thesis is divided into two parts: 1) characterization of gap junctional properties in FRTL-5 cells and, 2) exposure of these cells to radiation.

An Epidemiological Investigation Of Foot And Mouth Disease In A Dairy Farm In Uthaithani Province, Usuma Kukietnan, Suvut Chalajon

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

An epidemiological investigation of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Sawang Arom Dairy Co-operatives farm, between September-December 1998, found that 59 dairy farms holding 720 cattle, reported outbreak of the disease. Clinical examination revealed clinical signs in 65.55% of farms. Abortion (2.08%), stillbirth (0.83%) and mortality (0.83%) were found among the sick animals. The outbreaks were evident after introducing animals into farms where pregnant cows and calves were not vaccinated. Control of disease was achieved after 9 weeks following vaccination with trivalent- FMD vaccine (type O, A, Asia 1) which was given to all ≥ 3 mo. old calves and …

การวิจัยนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงบรรยาย เพื่อศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างปัจจัยคัดสรร ได้แก่ อายุ รายได้ครอบครัว จำนวนบุตรที่มีชีวิตอยู่ อายุครรภ์ ประวัติการสูญเสียบุตรในอดีต กับอาการวิตกกังวล และซึมเศร้าภายหลังสูญเสียการตั้งครรภ์ รวมทั้งความสามารถในการทำนายอาการวิตกกังวลและซึมเศร้า จากปัจจัยคัดสรร กลุ่มตัวอย่าง คือ หญิงตั้งครรภ์ซึ่งได้รับการวินิจฉัยจากสูติแพทย์ว่าต้องสิ้นสุด การตั้งครรภ์เพื่อการรักษา เนื่องจากการตั้งครรภ์ไม่มีตัวอ่อน ตัวอ่อนหรือทารกตายในครรภ์ การแท้งค้าง ทารกพิการ หรือมารดาเป็นโรคร้ายแรงที่ไม่สามารถดำเนินการตั้งครรภ์ต่อไปได้ จำนวน 113 ราย ซึ่งมา รับการรักษาที่หอผู้ป่วยสูติกรรม 3 คณะแพทยศาสตร์โรงพยาบาลรามาธิบดี ระหว่างเดือนมกราคม ถึง กันยายน 2542 เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลโดยใช้แบบสอบถาม ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ปัจจัยคัดสรรไม่มีความสัมพันธ์ กับอาการวิตกกังวลภายหลังสูญเสียการตั้งครรภ์ แต่อายุ รายได้ครอบครัว อายุครรภ์ มีความสัมพันธ์ กับอาการซึมเศร้า ภายหลังสูญเสียการตั้งครรภ์อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ อายุครรภ์และรายได้ครอบครัว สามารถร่วมกันทำนายอาการซึมเศร้าภายหลังสูญเสียการตั้งครรภ์ได้ร้อยละ 12.9 อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .01

The center of the brain-death and organ transplantation debate in Japan has always been whether whole brain-death should be regarded as the death of a person. However, the debate has not yet been settled in Japanese society. There are four main reasons why it is said that whole brain-death criteria are incompatible with Japanese society. First, they cannot establish a person's death because the Japanese define it not according to medical facts but according to social relationships. beta-thalassemia is one of the most common inherited single gene disorder in Pakistan. It is characterized by reduced or absent beta-globin gene expression resulting in abnormal maturation and survival of red blood cells. Speech and Hearing Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Studies of early-developing consonants (stops, nasals, and glides) in babbling have shown that most of the variance in consonants and their associated vowels, both within and between syllables, is due to a "frame" produced by mandibular oscillation, with very little active contribution from intrasyllabic or intersyllabic tongue movements. In a study of four babbling infants, the prediction that this apparently basic "frame dominance" would also apply to late-developing consonants (fricatives, affricates, and liquids) was tested. With minor exceptions, confirming evidence for both the predicted intrasyllabic and intersyllabic patterns was obtained. Results provide further evidence for the frame dominance conception, but …

This paper attempts to reduce the distance between intellectual frameworks that inform different fields of social work practice by exploring the relationships between intrapsychic mechanisms, family dynamics, small group processes and such society wide phenomena as public denigration, scapegoating, and the systematic oppression of politically targeted population subgroups. Clinical theories are used to explore disturbing social trends such as the redistribution of wealth while cutting services to the needy, the growth of prisons and disproportionaten umbers of incarcerated people of color, societal retreat from social obligation and commitment and divisive political rhetoric. Cushing's syndrome is a condition in which hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex produce excessive amount of cortisol or ACTH. Cortisol hormones effect fat, protein and glucose metabolism. Cushing's syndrome caused by, first from benign or malignant tumors of adrenal cortex, second from pituitary, hypothalamus disorder, bronchogenic or lung carcinoma. Third from iatrogenic cause.
