An Outbreak Of Leptospirosis In A Swine Breeding Herd : It's Diagnosis, Treatment And Economic Effect, Duangjai Suwanchareon, Annop Kunavongkrit

An outbreak of leptospirosis in a 2600 sow breeding herd, in which 5% of the sows aborted, was investigated. Serum samples from 11 aborted sows were examined for leptospira antibodies. Using a Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT), containing only 12 serovars, no leptospira serovars were detected. However, after using a Microcapsule Agglutination Test (MCAT) kit, a further MAT using the additional three serovars (sejroe, hardjo and bratislava) revealed that the cause of abortion was Leptospira interrogan serovars bratislava and sejroe. Protein profiles of crude extracts from adult male and female Haemonchus placei, Mecistocirrus digitatus and Cooperia spp. were studied. The parasites were collected from the abomasum and duodenum of cattle at Pathumthani and Nonthaburi’s abattoirs. SDS-PAGE analysis of the crude extracts revealed, protein bands of various intensities ranging from 13- 24 bands with a molecular mass of between 19-130 kDa. The protein band patterns of each parasite at a molecular weight of between 48.2-111 kDa were similar whereas other protein bands at a molecular mass below 48.2 kDa were different. The Antimicrobial Resistance Of Salmonellae Isolated From Animals, Indhira Kramomtong, Channarong Rodkhum, Waree Niyomthum

A total of 39 salmonella isolates were obtained from organ samples taken from duck, chicken and pig carcasses on 34 farms. They were tested for resistance to 11 antimicrobial drugs. 69.2% of isolates were resistant to at least one drug. Most resistances was shown to tetracycline and sulfamethoxazole while most isolates were susceptible to norfloxacin, enrofloxacin, flumiquine and furazolidone. Ampicillin and cephapirin were effective on the salmonella isolates from ducks and chicken, whereas kanamycin was effective on the isolates from chicken and pigs. This article concerns the correlation between children with dyslexia and brain morphology. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies suggest that five major differences exist between dyslexic and typical children. Primarily, the genu of the corpus callosum is significant smaller in dyslexic children. Secondly, the corpus callosum in dyslexic children with family history is larger and thicker. Thirdly, dyslexics demonstrate more deviations from normal patterns of left and right hemisphere asymmetry. Fourthly, posterior superior surface of temporal lobe, planum temporal surface area and brain volume in left brain are smaller in dyslexics. Finally, six brain regions account for …

This paper attempts to reduce the distance between intellectual frameworks that inform different fields of social work practice by exploring the relationships between intrapsychic mechanisms, family dynamics, small group processes and such society wide phenomena as public denigration, scapegoating, and the systematic oppression of politically targeted population subgroups. Clinical theories are used to explore disturbing social trends such as the redistribution of wealth while cutting services to the needy, the growth of prisons and disproportionaten umbers of incarcerated people of color, societal retreat from social obligation and commitment and divisive political rhetoric. An Epidemiological Investigation Of Foot And Mouth Disease In A Dairy Farm In Uthaithani Province, Usuma Kukietnan, Suvut Chalajon

An epidemiological investigation of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Sawang Arom Dairy Co-operatives farm, between September-December 1998, found that 59 dairy farms holding 720 cattle, reported outbreak of the disease. Clinical examination revealed clinical signs in 65.55% of farms. Abortion (2.08%), stillbirth (0.83%) and mortality (0.83%) were found among the sick animals. The outbreaks were evident after introducing animals into farms where pregnant cows and calves were not vaccinated. Control of disease was achieved after 9 weeks following vaccination with trivalent- FMD vaccine (type O, A, Asia 1) which was given to all ≥ 3 mo. old calves and …

OBJECTIVE: This pilot study explored occupational therapists' perceptions of their roles as interventionists providing education and support for caregivers of persons with dementia. The intervention was provided in caregivers' homes as part of a larger funded study.

METHOD: Interviews were conducted with four occupational therapists to elicit their reflections on practice and their views on occupational therapy services on the basis of their experiences providing support and education for caregivers in the funded study.

Placebo-trials on HIV-infected pregnant women in developing countries like Thailand and Uganda have provoked recent controversy. Such experiments aim to find a treatment that will cut the rate of vertical transmission more efficiently than existing treatments like zidovudine. This scenario is first stated as generally as possible, before three ethical principles found in the Belmont Report, itself a sharpening of the Helsinki Declaration, are stated. These three principles are the Principle of Utility, the Principle of Autonomy and the Principle of Justice. These are taken as voices of moral imperative. BACKGROUND:

Community-based information on maternal mental health in developing countries is meager and nearly non-existent in Pakistan.

OBJECTIVE:

To determine the proportion of probable cases of women with mental disorders and examine the associated conditions and risk factors which contribute to maternal mental ill-health.

METHODS:

With convenient sampling 260 mothers in an urban squatter settlement of Karachi were interviewed. The tools consisted of a household questionnaire collecting information on basic demographic and other characteristics and the Aga Khan University Anxiety and Depression Scale (AKUADS), an instrument to assess psychiatric morbidity.

An amplification primer and probe which can be used in an in vitro diagnostic test for the presence of S. neurona in equine blood or cerebrospinal fluid. Sarcocystis neurona is responsible for the equine condition of protozoal myelitis. The amplification primer is seventeen nucleotides in length and complementary to a unique section of the small ribosomal subunit of Sarcocystis neurona. The primer encompasses nucleotide positions 1470-1487 of the small ribosomal subunit of S. neurona. The primer has the sequence 5' CCATTCCGGACGCGGGT SEQ ID NO:1.

Compositions containing as the active ingredient a spin-trapping reagent, preferably α-phenyl butyl nitrone (PBN) or spin-trapping derivatives thereof, in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier for administration to a patient are disclosed for treating or preventing symptoms associated with aging or other conditions associated with oxidative tissue damage. Other spin-trapping agents can also be used, such as 5,5-dimethyl pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) or α-(4-pyridyl 1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone (POBN), and other spin-trapping derivatives thereof. Yeast vacuoles undergo priming, docking, and homotypic fusion, although little has been known of the connections between these reactions. Vacuole-associated Vam2p and Vam6p (Vam2/6p) are components of a 65S complex containing SNARE proteins. Upon priming by Sec18p/NSF and ATP, Vam2/6p is released as a 38S subcomplex that binds Ypt7p to initiate docking. We now report that the 38S complex consists of both Vam2/6p and the class C Vps proteins [Reider, S. E. and Emr, S. D. (1997) Mol. Biol. Cell 8, 2307-2327]. This complex includes Vps33p, a member of the Sec1 family of proteins that bind t-SNAREs. We term this …

Qualitative transcriptional regulatory sequences functional in plants, plant tissue and in plant cells for inducible gene expression and quantitative transcriptional regulatory sequences for increasing the transcriptional expression of downstream genetic information in plants, plant tissue and plant cells are disclosed. Also disclosed are methods and recombinant DNA molecules for improving the disease resistance of transgenic plants, especially wherein an inducible promoter controls the expression of a protein capable of evoking the hypersensitive response in a plant.

Purpose: Hispanic mothers tend to over use hospital emergency services and under use primary care providers when seeking health care for their children. In order to change this health care utilization behavior, researchers must understand the barriers to health care perceived by Hispanic mothers. Design: In this non-experimental survey study, a non-probability, purposive sampling of 45 Hispanic mothers at a rural county pediatric clinic were surveyed. Methods: Using the Health Belief Model (HBM) as its framework an 18-item survey examined, barriers to health care, cues to action, subjects' knowledge, family satisfaction, access, and likelihood of action.
