The purpose of this study was to compare out patient laboratory utilization patterns of active duty and retired military personnel and their dependents before and after the implementation of TRICARE. A stratified random sample was taken of patient test results over a two year period resulting in a sample size of 104 observations. The Complete Blood Count (CBC) results were used as indicators for the study. Data was gathered on the patient's rank, active duty/retiree status, age, dependent status, and gender. Recent studies have shown a close correlation between arch height of the foot and activity-related injuries. In the past, attempts to evaluate arch height from footprint parameters have yielded conflicting results. This could be caused by their failure to take anatomy into consideration in the proposed footprint parameters. This study investigates the relationship between arch height and Navicular Arch Index (NAI) - a new footprint parameter developed by us to incorporate anatomical consideration into footprint measurements. NAI is defined as the ratio of modified footprint width to foot width at the site corresponding to the navicular tuberosity. The arch height …

Acute traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI), a devastating event, results in huge costs to patients and society. Current management emphasizes general supportive care and stabilization of associated spinal columnar injury to prevent worsening of the cord lesions. Most of the numerous experimental studies to investigate pathophysiological changes following acute SCI suggest a two-step mechanism of damage to the spinal cord in which the primary (direct) or mechanical injury caused by trauma initiates secondary (indirect) or progressive autodestructive injury of the cord. Spinal cord injury (SCI) patients confined to a wheelchair for long periods are prone to pressure sores occurring at ischial tuberosity. This study used Expert-Seat pressure evaluation pad to record the pressure of the ischial tuberosities. Twenty-nine spinal cord injury subjects and twenty normal subjects participated in this study. The pressure distributed over ischial tuberosities during sitting was measured five times, including one measured without cushion. Four wheelchair cushions with different types of materials were evaluated in two population groups: spinal cord injured and normal control. A 44-year-old female Taiwanese developed T5 transverse myelitis (TM) in 1984, eight years before the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). She responded very well to prednisolone and azathioprine administration and had complete neurological recovery. In August 1997, a relapse of TM at vicinal level, T6, occurred. Magnetic resonance image of the spinal cord revealed long segment involvement from T4 to T8. High titer of antiphospholipid antibodies and various serological markers of lupus activity were found to correlate with this relapse of TM. She responded very well to methylprednisolone pulse therapy with nearly complete neurological recovery. Follow-up examination of magnetic …

The past 20 years have witnessed a significant increase in the number of published studies comparing inpatient with outpatient substance dependence treatment The majority of these studies have reported no benefit for those recipients receiving more intensive treatment However, the outpatient treatment investigated in these studies has typically been day treatment often involving 27 hours a week of participation, and not intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), which involves 12 or fewer hours of participation per week. Current assessment taxonomy, including the DSM -IV and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) (World Health Organization, 1990) editions, have provided semistructured criteria sets to aid professionals in making a diagnosis of ADHD or ADD. The diagnostic taxonomy criteria, however, have resulted in a very heterogeneous population of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordered (ADHD) individuals. Voice Onset Times And Burst Frequencies Of Four Velar Stop Consonants In Gujarati, Manish Rami, Joseph Kalinowski, Andrew Stuart, Michael P. Rastatter

Voice onset times (VOT) and burst frequencies of two aspirated (i.e., /k^h /, /g^h/)  and two unaspirated (i.e., /k/, /g/) Gujarati velar stop consonants were investigated in an effort to provide characteristic acoustic information. Stop consonants in a monosyllabic vowel–consonant–vowel (VCV) production were obtained from eight native speakers of Gujarati. Differences in mean VOT and burst frequency as a function of voicing and aspiration were examined. A significant voicing by aspiration effect was found for VOT (p = 50.026). The two voiced stops, while not significantly different from each other had significantly shorter VOTs than voiceless …

Effects of suggestion and placebos in pain therapy have become a modern theme in pain management. This study was designed to investigate whether suggestive false biofeedback, compared with a true biofeedback control condition, would have an effect on pain perception ratings in a simplified version of a cold pressor task (CPT). Psycho-physiological measures of electrical cortical activity (EEG) and muscle tension (EMG) combined with psychological correlates (verbal and visual pain ratings) were also assessed.

A radiation hybrid (RH)-derived physical map of 25 markers on the feline X chromosome (including 19 Type I coding loci and 6 Type II microsatellite markers) was compared to homologous marker order on the human and mouse X chromosome maps. Complete conservation of synteny and marker order was observed between feline and human X chromosomes, whereas the same markers identified a minimum of seven rearranged syntenic segments between mouse and cat/human X chromosome marker order. Within the retina, the POU domain of transcription factors brn-3.0, brn-3.1, and brn-3.2 are present only in retinal ganglion cells. These genes are believed to be involved in establishing neural cell lineages in mammals. In this study brn-3.2 was examined by comparing the number of ganglion cells present during postnatal development in normal mice (+/+), in mice homozygous (-/-) for the brn-3.2 gene, and in adult mice with a heterozygous gene deletion (+/-) for brn-3.2. Long term control of high-grade brain tumors is rarely achieved with current therapeutic regimens. This study sought to determine if pretreatment with plasmid DNA expressing Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α) could enhance the effect of ionizing radiation in an aggressive, rapidly growing glioma tumor (C6) model. Plasmid DNA is an attractive vector system for delivery of foreign genes into eukaryotic cells due to its advantages including low immunogenicity in vivo, lesser toxicity and relatively low cost. With the advancement of medical procedures, heart transplantation has become a viable alternative for infants born with congenital or acquired heart disease. Although these children are thought to experience much improvement in their overall physical functioning post-transplantation, the long-term psychological functioning of these children and their families is currently unknown. This study examines the long-term family functioning and psychosocial development of infant heart transplant recipients in comparison to children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and non-clinical control children.
