The article provides information on a study that investigated management preference and desire for decision-making involvement in women who have received a first mildly abnormal Papanicolaou smear. The majority of women in this highly educated sample preferred active management of their mildly abnormal Pap smears, although a substantial minority either opted for the surveillance strategy or reported no strong preference. Furthermore, management preference in this sample was not related to knowledge but rather to level of state anxiety. This indicates that these decisions may be guided more by emotions than by facts. Dysphagia frequently occurs in patients inflicted with dermatomyositis. Dysphagia in dermatomyositis patients is occasionally overlooked and misdiagnosed since it is not a major clinical manifestation. This article presented on a 31 years old woman inflicted with dermatomyositis. Dysphagia developed during her hospitalization, as evidenced by her difficulty in swallowing solid food and choking with nasal regurgitation while taking liquids. Psychogenic dysphagia was diagnosed simply owing to the lack of positive findings of esophagogram. The patient subsequently visited OPD of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department. As a serious social problem, heroin abuse may induce toxic encephalopathy, cerebrovascular accident, or peripheral neuropathy. This article describe a 40 year old male diagnosed as lateral medullary syndrome ( Wallenberg syndrome), possibly resulted from heroin abuse. Possible causes for his symptoms are ischemic stroke and toxic demyelination. This patient also suffered from brachial plexopathy of left side. This malady may be attributed to nerve inflammation reaction from heroin and adulterants. This article also discussed heroin-related neurological disorders. Results presented herein provide a valuable reference for clinical diagnosis and management.

Vacuole fusion occurs in three stages: priming, in which Sec18p mediates Sec17p release, LMA1 (low M_r activity 1) relocation, and cis-SNARE (soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor) complex disassembly; docking, mediated by Ypt7p and trans-SNARE association; and fusion of docked vacuoles. Ca²⁺ and calmodulin regulate late stages of the reaction. We now show that the vacuole proton gradient, generated by the vacuolar proton ATPase, is needed for trans-SNARE complex formation during docking and hence for the subsequent LMA1 release. Traditional and molecular genetic typing techniques have been used for discriminating the clonal relationships of bacterial strains. Traditional typing techniques based on phenotypic characteristics such as serotyping are being increasingly replaced by the use of DNA-based methods. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has led to typing techniques based on DNA amplification. Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) typing (Arbitrarily Primed-Polymerase Chain Reaction, APPCR) is one of the techniques which is being used increasingly to type micro-organisms, especially during clinical outbreaks. The theoretical aspects and the critical parameters that affect typing and results of RAPD typing are discussed in the text.

จุดประสงค์ของงานวิจัยนี้ต้องการนำเทคนิคการปฏิสนธินอกร่างกายมาใช้เพื่อเปรียบเทียบอัตรา ความสำเร็จในการปฏิสนธิโดยใช้น้ำเชื้อสดซึ่งเก็บที่อุณหภูมิ 15 °C และ 5 °C เป็นระยะเวลา 0, 2, 4, 6 วัน โดยทําการรีดน้ำเชื้อจากพ่อสุกรพันธุ์ 2 ตัว ที่มีน้ำเชื้อคุณภาพดี (สุกร เอ สายพันธุ์ดูร็อคและสุกร บี สายพันธุ์ ลาร์จไวท์) เพื่อนำไปปฏิสนธิภายนอกร่างกายกับโอโอไซต์ที่เก็บจากรังไข่ของสุกรสาว แล้วนำตัวอ่อนประมาณ 10% ของกลุ่มที่ได้จากการปฏิสนธิด้วยน้ำเชื้อที่เก็บไว้ที่อุณหภูมิ 15 °C และ 5 °C ตามระยะเวลาต่าง ๆ มา ย้อมสีอาซิโต-ออซิน เพื่อสังเกตอัตราการปฏิสนธิ ส่วนตัวอ่อนที่เหลือนำมาเลี้ยงในน้ำเพาะเลี้ยงเพื่อตรวจดู อัตรา การแบ่งตัวของตัวอ่อน ผลการวิจัยพบว่าเมื่อเก็บรักษาน้ำเชื้อที่อุณหภูมิ 15 °C อัตราการแบ่งตัวของ ตัวอ่อนลดลงตามระยะเวลาที่เก็บรักษาน้ําเชื้อ (P<0.05, P<0.01 และ P<0.001) โดยอัตราการแบ่งตัวของ ตัวอ่อนเมื่อใช้น้ำเชื้อจากพ่อสุกร บี มีแนวโน้มสูงกว่าเมื่อใช้น้ำเชื้อจากสุกร เอ แต่ผลนี้ไม่แตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ จากการใช้น้ำเชื้อของพ่อสุกร บี พบว่าอัตราการแบ่งตัวของตัวอ่อนของน้ําเชื้อเก็บที่ อุณหภูมิ 5 °C เป็นระยะเวลา 0, 2, 4, 6 วัน มีค่าต่ำกว่าของน้ำเชื้อไว้ที่อุณหภูมิ 15 °C (P< 0.01) โดยระยะ เวลาในการเก็บน้ำชื้อไม่มีผลกระทบต่ออัตราการแบ่งตัวของตัวอ่อนเมื่อเก็บน้ำเชื้อไว้ที่อุณหภูมิ 5 °C ผลการ วิจัยนี้แสดงว่าระยะเวลาการเก็บน้ำเชื้อของสุกรที่อุณหภูมิ 15 °C มีผลต่ออัตราการปฏิสนธิภายนอกร่างกาย แต่ผลดังกล่าวไม่พบในกรณีที่เก็บน้ําเชื้อไว้ที่อุณหภูมิ 5°C

สุกรอายุ 7 ถึง 9 สัปดาห์จากฟาร์มแห่งหนึ่งในจังหวัดนครปฐม ป่วยแสดงอาการหายใจกระแทก ถ่ายเหลว ซูบผอม ถูกส่งเพื่อชันสูตรโรค ณ โรงพยาบาลปศุสัตว์ คณะสัตวแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์ มหาวิทยาลัย พบรอยโรคต่อมน้ำเหลืองทั่วร่างกายขยายใหญ่ 3 ถึง 4 เท่าจากปกติ ลำไส้อักเสบ ปอดอักเสบ แบบ cranioventral pneumonia และ multifocal to diffuse interstitial pneumonia และพบการเสื่อมสลาย ของเนื้อเยื่อน้ำเหลืองร่วมกับการตรวจพบ intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies จำนวนมากในเซลล์ macro-phage ในต่อมทอนซิล ต่อมน้ำเหลือง และ Peyer's patch ในลำไส้ ซึ่งพบว่าเป็นอนุภาคคล้ายไวรัสขนาด 14-18 นาโนเมตรโดยการตรวจด้วยกล้องจุลทรรศน์อิเลคตรอน ได้รับการพิสูจน์ว่าเป็นเชื้อ porcine circovirus ด้วยวิธีการทางอิมมูโนฮีสโตเคมี ซึ่งเป็นการพบหลักฐานการติดเชื้อไวรัสชนิดนี้ในสุกรเป็นครั้งแรกในประเทศไทย

Objective: To study of the dietary practices and beliefs of patients suffering from chronic liver disease.

Setting: Two private tertcary care hospitals.

Method: Fifty patients presenting to the Gastroenterology Clinics at the Aga Khan University Hospital and Baqai Hospital, with compensated liver disease and no other co-morbid condition which required dietary modifications, were enrolled in the study. Patients were interviewed regarding their current dietary practices using an open-ended questionnaire.

Results: The mean age of the patients was 48 years and the majority were in relatively poor nutritional status. Four had BMI's < 18; 58% had Hb < 12 g/dl and 36% had albumin levels < 3 gm/dl. The percentage of patients avoiding various foods is as follows: meats 72%, fats and oils 64%, salt 42%, spices 34%, milk and milk products 28%, rice 20%.

เพาะเชื้อยูเรียพลาสมาจากน้ำชะล้างหนังหุ้มลึงค์น้ำเชื้อสดและน้ำเชื้อที่ใส่ยาปฏิชีวนะของพ่อพันธุ์ โคนมด้วย Taylor-Robinson (TR) medium พบว่าตัวอย่างที่มีเชื้อยูเรียพลาสมาจะเปลี่ยนสีของ phenol red ใน TR broth จากสีส้มเป็นสีแดงหรือชมพู ปริมาณที่วัดได้เป็น colour changing unit (CCU/ml) โคโลนีของ เชื้อยูเรียพลาสมา จาก TR agar มีลักษณะใสและขนาดเล็ก เมื่อย้อมด้วยสารละลายแมงกานีสคลอไรด์ (MnCl2) โคโลนีของยูเรียพลาสมาจะเป็น dust-liked colony ติดสีน้ำตาล-ดำ ซึ่งเป็นลักษณะเฉพาะของ U. diversum ผลการตรวจเชื้อยูเรียพลาสมาจากน้ำชะล้างหนังหุ้มลึงค์ของพ่อโคพบ 75% ในน้ำเชื้อสด 94% ค่าพิสัย 10 - 100 CCU/ml และ 10 - 10 CCU/ml ตามลำดับ แต่ในน้ำเชื้อที่ใส่ยาปฏิชีวนะพบว่าเหลือเพียง 30% ค่าพิสัย 10 - 10 CCU/ml ซึ่งเป็นปริมาณที่ไม่ก่อให้เกิดโรค

The clathrin-associated AP-2 adaptor protein is a major polyphosphoinositide-binding protein in mammalian cells. A high affinity binding site has previously been localized to the NH(2)-terminal region of the AP-2 alpha subunit (Gaidarov et al. 1996. J. Biol. Chem. 271:20922-20929). Here we used deletion and site- directed mutagenesis to determine that alpha residues 21-80 comprise a discrete folding and inositide-binding domain. Further, positively charged residues located within this region are involved in binding, with a lysine triad at positions 55-57 particularly critical. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) II is overexpressed in many human cancers and is reactivated by, and crucial for viral oncogene (SV40 T antigen, [TAg])-induced tumorigenesis in several tumor models. Using a double transgenic murine hepatic tumor model, we demonstrate that tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) blocks liver hyperplasia during tumor development, despite TAg-mediated reactivation of IGF-II. Because the activity of IGFs is controlled by IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs), we investigated whether TIMP-1 overexpression altered the IGFBP status in the transgenic liver. Ligand blotting showed that IGFBP-3 protein levels were increased in TIMP-1-overexpressing double transgenic littermates, whereas IGFBP-3 mRNA levels were …

Two experiments were conducted to ascertain the effects of comparative negligence on damage awards. Participants awarded damages for a mock medical malpractice case in which the level of the plaintiff’s negligence was varied. Both experiments showed that damage awards were doubly discounted for partially negligent plaintiffs. Experiment 1 also found that the responses of college students did not differ from those of people who had been called for jury duty. Experiment 2 examined four components of the damage award and showed that the reduction due to the level of the plaintiff’s negligence occurred only in damages for bodily harm. Implications …

Some of these compounds may prevent or retard neuron loss by regulating intraneuronal and/or peripheral calcium and phosphate levels. The present invention relates to monoclonal antibody 1A7. This is an anti-idiotype produced by immunizing with an antibody specific for ganglioside GD2, and identifying a hybridoma secreting antibody with immunogenic potential in a multi-step screening process. Also disclosed are polynucleotide and polypeptide derivatives based on 1A7, including single chain variable region molecules and fusion proteins, and various pharmaceutical compositions. When administered to an individual, the 1A7 antibody overcomes immune tolerance and induces an immune response against GD2, which comprises a combination of anti-GD2 antibody and GD2-specific T cells. Little empirical knowledge exists regarding children's perceptions of health. The purpose of this quantitative descriptive study was to determine the health perceptions of children with a convenience sample of fourth-grade students at a small elementary school in Northeast Mississippi. The theoretical framework utilized was Bandura's Social Learning Theory. The directional hypothesis in the proposed study was school-age children have a positive perception of health. The Children's Health Rating Scale was utilized as a measurement tool that ranked 17 health-related questions on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 = most negative, 5 = most positive).
