PURPOSE: This study measured the perceptions of Utah cancer patients and cargivers concerning knowledge about and adequacy of pharmacologic cancer pain control. METHODS: A descriptive survey was used. Questionnaires were sent to cancer patients and caregivers surveying their knowledge about and perceptions of the adequacy of pharmacologic cancer pain control. RESULTS: The study had a 52% response rate (259 of 500). Eighty five percent (219 of 259) of the respondents stated they had no cancer pain. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Cancer literature indicated that much cancer pain is not effectively controlled. The majority of the respondents of this study reported no pain. …

Objective. Although the prevalence of children with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) has increased, empirical data about the role and practices of occupational therapists have not been reported in the literature. This descriptive study investigated the practice of occupational therapists with children with PDD.

Method. A survey was mailed to 500 occupational therapists in the Sensory Integration Special Interest Section or School System Special Interest Section of the American Occupational Therapy Association in eastern and midwestern United States. Objective: As blockade of CC-chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) has been proposed as therapy for HIV-1, we examined whether the CCR5-Δ32/Δ32 homozygous genotype has phenotypic expressions other than those related to HIV-1.

Design: Study subjects were white homosexual men or men with hemophilia who were not infected with HIV-1. In this study, 15 CCR5-Δ32/Δ32 homozygotes were compared with 201 CCR5 wild-type (+/+) subjects for a wide range of clinical conditions and laboratory assay results ascertained during prospective cohort studies and routine clinical care. CCR5-Δ32 genotype was determined by polymerase chain reaction, followed by single-stranded conformational polymorphism analysis.

This study was designed to A) determine the most effective method of communicating a dental procedure to the parent of a pediatric patient and B) determine the impact that various presentation methods would have on a parent's willingness to give informed consent.

The purpose of this study is to determine if mandibular first molar distal tip back during orthodontic treatment will result in improved long-term alignment of mandibular incisors. Our pre and posttreatment sample consisted of 57 Class I and Class II patients (40 female and 17 male). Incisor irregularity was recorded at T2 and T4 (average of 12.9 years postretention at T4). Molar tipback was evaluated T1 to T2 and T2 to T4. The purpose of this study is to compare two mechanical debonding methods on ceramic brackets (TP MXi and 3M Clarity) and a metal bracket (GAC OmniArch) with four different bonding materials (light-cured, one-step chemical-cured, two-step chemical-cured, and Fuji GIC) in clinical simulation, where the diametral force was applied on the handle of the pliers. The theoretical mechanisms underlying the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are based on dysfunctional output from the basal ganglia projected to the cortex via the thalamus. However, the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and substantia nigra pars reticularis (SNr) as part of the basal ganglia, also project to the brainstem, in particular to the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN). Both the STN and SNr have altered neuronal activity in the 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) Parkinson’s model rat. Thus, it is hypothesized that the PPN is altered in this model of Parkinson’s disease.

Gap junctions play a crucial role in embryogenesis, especially of the heart where connexin43 is thought to be important for its formation as well as synchronized contraction. Several reports have shown that connexin43 protein is phosphorylated on serine residues in vitro and in vivo.

Studies performed in our laboratory have demonstrated that cell-to-cell communication in cells expressing connexin43 can be controlled rapidly and reversibly by microinjection of active protein kinases or phosphatases that target serine or threonine residues. This study addresses the use of scales and subscales from prehire MMPI’s to predict levels of aggression and stress among law enforcement professionals in the field (n=75). Multiple regression analysis revealed promising results in support of the MMPI’s predictive utility.

Two scales, Aggression (AGR) and Stress Vulnerability (SYS) were developed as outcome measures through a three step validation process: (a) theoretical-substantive, through a literature review and analysis of pilot data (n = 202); (b) internal-structural, statistical analysis on sample data and (c) criterion-external, through corelational analysis with externally derived departmental assessments of each officer. การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการบริหารการพยาบาลของหัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วยในยุคภาวะวิกฤตเศรษฐกิจ โรงพยาบาลศูนย์ ในด้านการวางแผน การจัดระบบงาน การอํานวยการ และ การควบคุมงาน เปรียบเทียบการบริหารการพยาบาลของหัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วยในยุคภาวะวิกฤตเศรษฐกิจ โรงพยาบาลศูนย์ จําแนกตามระดับการศึกษา ประสบการณ์ในตำแหน่งบริหาร การได้รับการอบรม ทางการบริหาร และภาวะผู้นำของหัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วย กลุ่มตัวอย่างคือ หัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วยโรงพยาบาล ศูนย์ 14 แห่ง จำนวน 287 คน ตอบแบบสอบถามการบริหารการพยาบาลของหัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วยใน ยุคภาวะวิกฤตเศรษฐกิจ และพยาบาลวิชาชีพ จำนวน 861 คน ซึ่งเป็นผู้ใต้บังคับบัญชาของหัวหน้า หอผู้ป่วย ดังกล่าวมาอย่างน้อย 1 ปี ตอบแบบสอบถามภาวะผู้นำของหัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วย เลือกกลุ่ม ตัวอย่างโดยวิธี การสุ่มแบบแบ่งชั้นภูมิ เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัย เป็นแบบสอบถามการบริหาร การพยาบาลของ หัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วยในยุคภาวะวิกฤตเศรษฐกิจ และแบบสอบถามภาวะผู้นำของหัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วยที่ผ่านการทดสอบความตรงตามเนื้อหา และทดสอบความเที่ยงด้วยวิธีของครอนบาค มีค่าความเที่ยง 98 และ 96 ตามลำดับ วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยหาค่าร้อยละ ค่าเฉลี่ย ส่วนเบี่ยงเบน มาตรฐาน สถิติทดสอบเอฟ สถิติทดสอบที และสถิติทดสอบครุสคัล-วอลลิส ผลการวิจัยพบว่า การบริหารการพยาบาลของหัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วยในยุคภาวะวิกฤติเศรษฐกิจ ในด้านการวางแผน การ จัดระบบงาน การอำนวยการ และการ ควบคุม ต้องคำนึงถึงคุณภาพการบริการพยาบาล การประหยัด ลดค่าใช้จ่าย เพิ่มรายได้ มีประสิทธิภาพ ประสิทธิผล ใช้ทรัพยากรให้คุ้มค่า คำนึงถึงความจำเป็น เป็นหลัก การบริหารการพยาบาลของหัวหน้า หอผู้ป่วยในยุคภาวะวิกฤติเศรษฐกิจโดยรวม อยู่ใน ระดับมาก เมื่อจำแนกเป็นรายด้านพบว่า ด้านการ วางแผน การจัดระบบงาน การอำนวยการ และ การควบคุมงาน อยู่ในระดับมากเช่นกัน หัวหน้าหอ ผู้ป่วยที่มีระดับการศึกษาสูงกว่าปริญญาตรี ปฏิบัติการบริหารการพยาบาลในยุคภาวะวิกฤต เศรษฐกิจมากกว่าหัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วยที่มีระดับการ ศึกษาต่ำกว่าปริญญาตรี และแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัย สำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .05 หัวหน้าหอผู้ป่วย จำแนกตามประสบการณ์ในตำแหน่งบริหาร การได้รับ การอบรมทางการบริหาร และระดับภาวะ ผู้นำที่แตกต่างกัน ปฏิบัติการบริหารการพยาบาลในยุคภาวะ วิกฤตเศรษฐกิจไม่แตกต่างกัน

Objective:

To determine the prevalence of Hodgkin’s disease (HD) and its various subtypes in children and adults and assess the use of immunohistochemical (IHC) studies in confirming HD cases and excluding its close mimicries/look-alikes.

Material and Methods:

All 265 Hodgkin’s disease cases diagnosed at The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi over the last 6 years (July 1991 - July 1997) were included. Of these 219 were diagnosed on routine H&E examination while in the remaining 46 cases, diagnosis was made after a thorough IHC workup. ทำหมันสุนัขลูกผสมพื้นเมืองเพศผู้จำนวน 12 ตัว ด้วยวิธีตัดหลอดนำน้ําอสุจิ พบว่าระดับฮอร์โมน เทสโทสเตอโรนในซีรั่ม และในน้ำเลี้ยงอสุจิไม่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิต เมื่อเปรียบเทียบ กับก่อนทำหมัน และพบว่าระดับฮอร์โมนเทสโทสเตอโรนในซีรั่ม มีค่าสูงกว่าในน้ำเลี้ยงอสุจิในระดับ 30-70 เท่า และนอกจากนี้ยังพบว่าการทำหมันด้วยวิธีนี้ ไม่ทําให้สุนัขมีน้ำหนักตัวเพิ่มขึ้นและไม่ทำให้พฤติกรรม ของสุนัขเปลี่ยนไป

Isolation Of Cilia-Associated Respiratory (Car) Bacillus From Pigs And Calves And Experimental Infection Of Gnotobiotic Pigs And Rodents, Jerome C. Nietfeld, Barry L. Fickbohm, Douglas G. Rogers, Craig L. Franklin, Lela K. Riley

Filamentous, gram-negative bacteria morphologically similar to cilia-associated respiratory (CAR) bacillus of rodents and rabbits were isolated from the tracheas of 5 pigs and 4 calves. All pigs but none of the calves had histologic lesions of chronic tracheitis. In silver-stained histologic sections, CAR bacilli were adhered to the tracheal epithelium of each pig but were not found in the calves. Like CAR bacillus of rats, the bacteria displayed gliding motility and grew only in cell culture or cell culture medium supplemented with fetal serum. Initially, all isolates were contaminated by Mycoplasma spp. This contamination was eliminated from 4 pig isolates …
