The Direct And Indirect Patient Benefits Of Orthopedic Physical Therapy Specialization, Amy Lynne Dipman

This research surveyed 25% of Orthopedic Certified Specialists to determine the direct and indirect patient benefits resulting from the American Physical Therapy Association specialization process. The newly developed questionnaire included questions pertaining to demographics, professional activities, and professional opinions regarding specialty certification. The results showed a statistically significant relationship between the number of PT’s on staff at a facility and the amount of therapist mentoring. Overall, only 50% of the therapists subjectively reported improved patient care secondary to specialization. The qualitative data showed that many therapists reported providing high quality care prior to specialization. Patients are receiving direct and indirect …

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effects of Healing Touch (HT) on well-being and neuroendocrine function in individuals living with HIV disease. A total of 27 males completed the 4-week HT intervention. Each weekly HT session lasted 30 minutes and consisted of only the chakra connection, Because of the small sample size and the impact of gender on neuroendocrine and immune function, women were not included in this study Dependent variables included well-being as measured by three well-being and two psychological distress instruments, serum serotonin, salivary DHEA and cortisol, and a variety of enumerative and functional measures …

A plasmid bearing a cDNA copy of the genome of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), chimeric derivatives of the plasmid and a method of producing an infectious bovine viral diarrhea virus using the plasmid are disclosed. The invention relates to a plasmid DNA molecule that replicates easily in E. coli and contains a sufficient portion of the genome of BVDV, cloned as cDNA, to be a suitable template to produce RNA in vitro which, upon transfection into bovine cells, gives rise to infectious BVDV. Conjunctivitis Caused By A Swine Chlamydia Trachomatis-Like Organism In Gnotobiotic Pigs, Douglas G. Rogers, Arthur A. Andersen

The objective of this study was to determine whether a chlamydial strain recovered from growing and finishing swine with conjunctivitis or keratoconjunctivitis could cause the same infections in gnotobiotic pigs. The strain shares biological characteristics with Chlamydia trachomatis. After propagation in Vero cells and preparation of the inoculum (107 inclusion-forming units/ml), chlamydial strain H7 was instilled into the ventral conjunctival sac (0.15 ml/sac) of 12 anesthetized 3-day-old gnotobiotic piglets. Four age-matched gnotobiotic piglets were anesthetized and sham infected with uninfected cell culture lysates. None of the principal piglets developed clinical symptoms of conjunctivitis or keratoconjunctivitis. Principal piglets necropsied 7 …

Gnotobiotic piglets were inoculated intralaryngeally with swine Chlamydia trachomatis strain R33 or orally with swine C. trachmatis strain R27. Archived formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from piglets euthanatized 4–7 days postinoculation were examined by in situ hybridization for C. trachomatis nucleic acid using a nonradioactive digoxigenin-labeled DNA probes that targeted specific ribosomal RNA or omp1 mRNA molecules of the swine C. trachomatis strains. Positive hybridization signals were detected in bronchial epithelial cells, bronchiolar epithelial cells, pneumocytes, alveolar and interstitial macrophages, and jejunal and ileal enterocytes. Affinity chromatography is a type of liquid chromatography that makes use of biological-like interactions for the separation and specific analysis of sample components. This review describes the basic principles of affinity chromatography and examines its use in the testing of clinical samples, with an emphasis on HPLCbased methods. Some traditional applications of this approach include the use of boronate, lectin, protein A or protein G, and immunoaffinity supports for the direct quantification of solutes. Alcoholism is transmitted in families. The complexity and heterogeneity of this disorder has made it difficult to identify specific genetic correlates. One design with the potential to do so is the family-based association study, in which the frequencies of genetic polymorphisms are compared between affected and nonaffected members. Reduced central serotonin neurotransmission is associated with features of an antisocial subtype of alcoholism, although a primary deficit has not been traced to a particular component. Genetic markers related to the serotonergic system have been identified, located, and cloned. If associations can be discovered, the development process for pharmacotherapy could be facilitated. …

การวิจัยครั้งนี้เป็นการวิจัยกึ่งทดลอง (Quasi-Experimental Research) มีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาประสิทธิผลของโปรแกรมการพัฒนาทักษะชีวิตต่อพฤติกรรมการป้องกันการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ใน วัยเรียนของนักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 3 โรงเรียนในสังกัดกรมสามัญศึกษา ในเขตกรุงเทพมหานคร ตัวอย่างประชากรที่ใช้ในการวิจัยคือ นักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 3 จํานวน 101 คน แบ่งออกเป็นกลุ่ม ทดลอง 51 คน และกลุ่มเปรียบเทียบ 50 คน นักเรียนในกลุ่มทดลองจะได้รับโปรแกรมการพัฒนา ทักษะชีวิต 5 แผน โดยประยุกต์แนวคิดทักษะชีวิตขององค์การอนามัยโลก และ กรมอนามัย กระทรวงสาธารณสุข โดยกำหนดสถานการณ์จำลองและใช้เทคนิคกระบวนการกลุ่ม ซึ่งประกอบด้วย การบรรยายนำสั้น ๆ การระดมสมอง การอภิปรายกลุ่มย่อยและกลุ่มใหญ่ การแสดงบทบาทสมมติ การฝึกทักษะ การสาธิต เพื่อให้นักเรียนเกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงพฤติกรรมในเรื่องความรู้ ความเข้าใจเกี่ยว กับการมีพฤติกรรมทางเพศที่เหมาะสม ความตระหนักในตนเอง ทักษะการตัดสินใจ ทักษะการ แก้ปัญหา ทักษะการปฏิเสธ ตลอดจนการมีพฤติกรรมการป้องกันตนเอง เพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงการมีเพศ สัมพันธ์ การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลใช้สถิติ ร้อยละ ค่าเฉลี่ย ค่าเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน Student's t-test และ Paired samples t-test พบว่าภายหลังการทดลอง 1 สัปดาห์ นักเรียนกลุ่มทดลองมีคะแนน ความรู้ความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับการมีพฤติกรรมทางเพศที่เหมาะสม ความตระหนักในตนเอง ทักษะการ ตัดสินใจ ทักษะการแก้ปัญหา ทักษะการปฏิเสธ และพฤติกรรมการป้องกันตนเองเพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงการ มีเพศสัมพันธ์สูงกว่าก่อนการทดลอง และสูงกว่ากลุ่มเปรียบเทียบอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ จึงควรพิจารณานำโปรแกรมพัฒนาทักษะชีวิตต่อพฤติกรรมการป้องกันการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ในวัยเรียนไป ประยุกต์ใช้กับการจัดการเรียนการสอนในโรงเรียนร่วมกับการจัดกิจกรรมเสริมอื่นๆ

Objective: To develop and test a quantitative, interviewer-administered food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to ascertain nutrient intakes of individuals in northern India. Design: A 92-item FFQ was developed based on food use and market surveys of the study area. A validation study was conducted consisting of 24-h diet recalls (24HR) administered on 6 randomly selected days over 1 year. Two FFQs were administered, one each at the beginning and end of the 1-year period. FFQ and 24HR-derived nutrient scores were compared using correlation and regression analyses and by computing differences between nutrient intakes estimated by the two methods. Managed care is beginning to dominate the delivery of mental health services. The Article reviews limitations on managed care's ability to deal adequately with mental illness. It discusses empirical and other research examining the use of primary care providers as gatekeepers and it explores utilization review mechanisms, focusing particularly on providers' responses to UR. The impact on quality, access and continuity of care on discrete populations is analyzed. The article then surveys a variety of legal issues in the regulation of managed care, particularly as they apply to the provision of mental health services. Malignant hyperthermia/hyperpyrexia (MH) is a serious human skeletal muscle disorder that manifests itself during general anaesthesia. Currently, the most reliable method of diagnosing this disease is the in-vitro contracture test (IVCT). This procedure is both highly invasive for the patient and expensive to perform. The skinned muscle fibre technique is less invasive, and could possibly be used as an alternative diagnostic test for MH. In this study, skeletal muscle samples were obtained from B adults (age 23-54 years) undergoing elective surgery at Royal Perth Hospital. The purpose of this study was to determine whether sinoaortic deafferentation (SAD) alters the severity of hypertension or sympathoadrenal contribution to mean blood pressure (MAP) during renal wrap hypertension. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with radiotelemetry transmitters for 24-hour recording of MAP and heart rate. All rats underwent either SAD or sham SAD (Intact) surgery and were allowed to recover for 10 to 14 days. The rats were then assigned to a normotensive (Sham) group or a hypertensive (Wrap) group in which 1-kidney figure-8 renal wrap was performed. SAD increased the acute MAP response to renal wrap (Intact-Sham=5+/-1 mm Hg, …

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the strength of the upper trapezius, middle trapezius, lower trapezius, and serratus anterior, and overhead throwing accuracy in 52 female collegiate softball players. The correlation between manual muscle testing (MMT) and hand-held dynamometry (HHD) was also examined. The Functional Throwing Performance Index (FTPI) was used to measure throwing accuracy. Spearman’s correlation analysis demonstrated no correlation between the strength assessments and throwing accuracy, as measured by the FTPI. Moderate correlations were found between MMT and HHD strength assessments of the lower and middle trapezius and serratus anterior muscles. A poor …

Stress activates the hypotalamic-pituitary- adrenal axis, increases circulating glucocorticoids, and is associated with alterations in immune functions. Nasal mucosa is richly innervated by sympathetic nerve fiber and nasal patency changes in response to various sympathetic stimuli. These fibres form close neuroeffector junctions with lymphocytes and macrophages. Urinary-tract infections (UTI) are common infectious diseases in childhood. The presence of UTI may be an indicator of a serious genitourinary (GU) abnormality that requires medical intervention. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of children discharged with a diagnosis of UTI from the Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, Texas, between July 1, 1991 and June 30, 1994. The purpose of the study was to determine how many patients had underlying GU abnormalities, the specific type of abnormality, and the microorganism causing the UTI. We investigated the effect of antibiotic or G-CSF plus antibiotic therapy given to E. coli septic rats. In our study, 80 rats were inoculated transperitoneally with 1 ml of a solution containing 10 7 colony forming units per milliliter of E. coli. Rats were divided into four treatment groups before being inoculaded with E. coli in a random fashion. Therapy was then started with cefotaxime (150 mg/kg intraperitonelally) and either Granulocyte-Colony Stimulation Factor (G-CSF; 30 µg/kg intarperitoneally) or placebo 24 hours after inoculation of E. coli for 3 consective days. Fanconi's anemia is an autosomal recessive disorder with manifestation of chromosomal instability inducible by alkylating agents. Since 1989 we studied 85 patients with suspected Fanconi's anemia (FA) to confirm diagnosis. Cytogenetic analyses were performed on spontaneous and induced cultures of peripheral blood samples. Induction was carried with mitomycin-C (MMC) or diepoxybutane (DEB). The normal range of spontaneous, MMC and DEB-induced breaks were 0.00-0.10, 0.00-0.16 and 0.00-0.16 per cell respectively. Fanconi's anemia was confirmed when breaks were above the normal threshold. According to this criterion 59 patients were confirmed as having FA. This experiment was conducted to investigate the time-dependent effects of gentamicin (GM) on the neuroepithelial morphology of the posterior crista ampullares (PCA) of the adult chinchilla. The time course of GM-induced HC pathology was documented through measurements of HC density as well as through HC morphologic evaluation. HC morphology was examined under light microscopy and HC density measurements were documented as a function of the time course of GM-induced ototoxicity.
