Objective: To determine aneuploidy frequencies in pellet and swim-up semen fractions from 10 infertile men with severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT) who were donating sperm for intracytoplasmic sperm injection and to determine whether the swim-up isolation method would successfully separate aneuploid from haploid sperm.

Design: Prospective study.

Setting: Infertility clinic and molecular genetics laboratory.

Patient(s): Ten patients with severe OAT.

Intervention(s): Cytogenetic analyses by fluorescence in situ hybridization to determine aneuploidy frequencies for chromosomes 1, 13, 18, 21, X, and Y in sperm from swim-up and pellet fractions.

The study conducted in the rural area of the province of Imbabura included a total of 518 families that when compared with the estimated sample of 96%, 42.7 % corresponding to the indigenous ethnic group, 28.15% to Black and 25% to mixed-race ethnic groups, these differences of involvement between ethnic groups is due to the fact that the indigenous population is greater than the two remaining populations. Of the 518 families studied they were able to obtain a total of 794 children younger than 5, in which 48.5% pertaining to the male sex and 51.4% to the female sex. In …

Married couples aged 55-98 were surveyed regarding their perceptions of family-of-origin distress, their affective communication and problem solving communication skills, and their emotional intimacy. Two 2-way ANOVAs were performed with husbands' (model 1) and wives' (model 2) emotional intimacy scores as dependent measures and family-of-origin distress scores as the independent measures. Then both models were re-analyzed with affective communication and problem solving communication entered as co-variates. Results suggested that for both husbands and wives, emotional intimacy was affected by family-of-origin distress. Additionally, intimacy was affected by the distress in their spouses' family-of-origin in both models. Post-hoc analyses suggested that as …

The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the trunk muscle activity and range of motion in male and female golfers. With the use of surface electrode electromyography and motion analysis, three male and three female Division II collegiate golfers were evaluated. The EMG activity of the erector spinae, gluteus maximus, and external oblique muscles was measured bilaterally during the golf swing. The main emphasis in analyzing the trunk range of motion was comparing relative pelvis to shoulder rotation (X-factor) throughout the swing. The purpose of this study was to add to the orthopaedic body of knowledge regarding the efficacy of dynamic shoulder bracing in the management of anterior shoulder instability. Two fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders were used for testing. One shoulder was used as the "normal" shoulder, while the other was used as the "unstable" shoulder through the creation of a simulated Bankart lesion. Arthroscopic insertion of radiographic markers allowed for assessment of anterior translation of the humerus through the use of x-rays. PURPOSE: To evaluate muscle activity and joint motion of the trunk and hip of hockey players skating on a hockey treadmill. METHODS: Seven male subjects, ages 18 to 21 years, were tested skating at 8 Mph on 0 percent and 30 percent grades on the treadmill. A case study was completed on a 51-year-old female who suffered a stroke in 1996 and exhibited left-sided hemiplegia. The case study examined the effects of a six-week balance training program on an individual at least six months post stroke using a force platform system called the NeuroCom Balance Master®. Individuals suffering a stroke often times exhibit deficits in balance due to weakness, sensory loss, impaired righting reflexes, and visuospatial distortion.

The crucial function of macrophages in a variety of biological processes and pathologies render these cells important targets for gene therapeutic interventions. Commonly used synthetic gene delivery vectors have not been successful in transfecting these non-dividing cells. A combination strategy involving cationic liposomes to condense and carry DNA, transferrin to facilitate cellular uptake, and the pH-sensitive peptide GALA to promote endosome destabilization, resulted in significant expression of a luciferase gene. Transfection of macrophages was dependent on the degree of differentiation of the cells. A case of an 8-month old male child, who presented with lgG mediated Coomb’s positive hemolytic anemia and visceral leishmaniasis is presented. The hemolytic anemia resolved following the treatment of leishmaniasis. Although various other mechanisms of anemia have been described, so far the association between IgG-mediated hemolytic anemia and visceral leishmaniasis has not been reported.

Brief bursts of third-octave bands of noise (center frequencies at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 kHz) and band pass noises with different degrees of low-frequency content (0.5 to 4.0 kHz, 1.0 to 4.0 kHz and 2.0 to 4.0 kHz) were recorded binaurally from 17 different horizontal locations (90 degrees on the left to 90 degrees on the right in 11.25 degree steps) one meter from the ears of an anthropomorphic mannequin (KEMAR) in an anechoic room and a reverberant room. การวิจัยครั้งนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความต้องการการสนับสนุน ด้านความรู้ ด้านเศรษฐกิจ ด้านจิตใจและอารมณ์ ด้านทรัพยากร ด้านแหล่งสนับสนุนและปัญหา การดูแลผู้ติดเชื้อเอชไอวีในเขตกรุงเทพมหานคร กลุ่มตัวอย่างคือผู้ดูแลผู้ติดเชื้อเอชไอวี จํานวน 60 คน เลือกโดยการสุ่มแบบเฉพาะเจาะจง เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัย คือ แบบสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก เทปและเครื่องบันทึกเสียง วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา จากคําสัมภาษณ์ที่ได้จากการถอดเทป เป็นรายบรรทัด เปรียบเทียบข้อความอย่างต่อเนื่อง จัดหมวดหมู่ข้อมูลไว้เป็นพวก ๆ เชื่อมโยง อธิบายความหมายของข้อความและสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้น และเสนอข้อความที่มีความหมาย ผลการวิจัยมีดังต่อไปนี้ \nผู้ดูแลต้องการการสนับสนุนด้านความรู้ในเรื่องเชื้อที่ทําให้เกิดโรค อาการในระยะต่าง ๆ การ รักษา การติดต่อของโรค การดูแลผู้ติดเชื้อเอชไอวี เพราะความรู้ที่ผู้ดูแลมีอยู่นั้นผิวเผิน ผู้ดูแลต้องการ ให้มีการให้ความรู้โดยการ ใช้สื่อโทรทัศน์และวิทยุ เพราะส่วนใหญ่เป็นผู้มีการศึกษาระดับประถมศึกษา ความต้องการการสนับสนุนทางเศรษฐกิจ พบว่าผู้ดูแลทั้งหมดมีหนี้สินจากการดูแล และต้องการการ สนับสนุนค่ายาจากกองทุนและสังคมสงเคราะห์ ความต้องการการสนับสนุนด้านจิตใจและอารมณ์ ผู้ดูแลต้องการเปิดเผยความลับกับใครคนหนึ่งที่ไว้ใจได้ แต่ต้องการปกปิดเพื่อนบ้าน ผู้ร่วมงาน ต้องการไม่ให้คนรังเกียจ ให้กําลังใจ ปลอบใจ อย่าซ้ําเติม ให้คำปรึกษาและมาเยี่ยมเยียน ความต้องการการสนับสนุนด้านทรัพยากรพบว่า ผู้ดูแลต้องการน้ํายาฆ่าเชื้อแอลกอฮอล์ ผงโออาร์เอส ยาทาแผล ต้องการคนมาสับเปลี่ยนและต้องการเวลาเป็นของตัวเองบ้าง ความต้องการการสนับสนุนด้าน แหล่งสนับสนุน ผู้ดูแลต้องการทราบแหล่งสนับสนุน เช่น คลินิกนิรนาม ฮอทไลน์ ศูนย์ดูแลผู้ติดเชื้อ เอชไอวีในชุมชน ต้องการแหล่งกองทุนช่วยเหลือในเรื่องต่างๆ ต้องการให้เพิ่มเตียงในการรับ ผู้ติดเชื้อเอชไอวีในโรงพยาบาลให้มากขึ้น ต้องการให้โรงพยาบาลทุกแห่งยินดีรับผู้ติดเชื้อที่อาการ หนักและต้องเข้าโรงพยาบาลบ่อย ๆ และไม่ต้องรอการเข้ารับการรักษาในห้องฉุกเฉินนานเกินไป สิ่งที่พบเพิ่มเติมคือ ความต้องการการสนับสนุนด้านจิตวิญญาณ ผู้ดูแลต้องการการสนับสนุนจากศาสนา สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ต่าง ๆ เพื่อทําให้เกิดความหวังและพลังใจ ปัญหาการดูแลผู้ติดเชื้อเอชไอวี คือ ไม่มีความ รู้เพียงพอ ทําให้กลัวการติดเชื้อจากผู้ป่วย ปัญหาการเป็นหนี้สิน กลัวการถูกรังเกียจ ความยากลำบาก ในการหาเตียงให้ผู้ติดเชื้อในโรงพยาบาล สุขภาพทรุดโทรม ขาดรายได้ หมดแรง มีปัญหา ดานเพศสัมพันธ์กับคู่สมรส ความคับข้องใจในการเก็บความลับ
