Purpose: To evaluate the vascular patency of microanastomoses in rats with color Doppler ultrasonography. Materials and Methods: 15 superficial femoral and 15 carotid arterial end-to-end anastomoses were performed in 30 white rats. All arteries were evaluated pre- and post-operatively by color Doppler ultrasonography with a 7.5 mHz linear transducer (Acuson 128HP). All results were correlated with surgery after final Doppler evaluation. Results: The subjects were divided into three groups: (a) patent anastomosis; (b) partial occlusive anastomosis; (c) total occlusive anastomosis. Plasmodium berghei is the rodent equivalent of Plasmodium falciparum which causes cerebral malaria in humans. However, P. berghei does not cause cerebral malaria in BALB/c mice, instead it leads to parasitemia, fever and some degree of liver damage. Although different aspects of immunological response have been intensively investigated in malaria; this the first time the in vitro effect of P. berghei antigen lysate on murine NK cytotoxic activity was studied. The purpose of this study was to define carriage rates for Streptococcus pneumoniae in a given population in Ankara and also to determine the sertypes and penicilin resistance of these strains. A two-year old male infant with generalized BCG lymphadenitis is presented. There was no obvious immunodeficiency disorder detected in the patient. BCG vaccine had been given at two months of age, and the lymphadenopathy developed at 21 months of age. Fine needle aspiration biopsy of the lymph node on Giemsa stain revealed macrophages very similar to Gaucher cells. These cells also resembled macrophages seen in lepromatous leprosy. They were engorged with acid fast bacilli and had streaked or wrinkled cytoplasm. Mycobacterium bovis was cultured from the lymph nodes and the patients improved with antituberculous therapy.

Galactosialidosis is an autosomal recessive disease with combined deficiency of two lysosomal enzymes due to the lack of a protective protein. We report on a boy with infantile galactosialidosis who has an intermediate phenotype and vitamin D deficiency rickets. Due to the possible role of vitamin D deficiency in the pathogenesis of dysostosis multiplex we recommend that patients with lysosomal storage disease should be supplemented with vitamin D.

NADPH-d reaction was performed on nine male Sprague-Dawley rats and morphometry of NADPH-d(+) cells was investigated in caudate-putamen, globus pallidus and ventral pallidum. In caudate-putamen we observed intensely stained NADPH-d (+) cells. Maximum diameter and minimum diameters of the NADPH-d (+) cells in caudate-putamen was measured as 19.19±0.04 \mum and 10.42±0.12 \mum, consequently. PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) immunoreactivity in the uterus of mature rats was investigated after long term administration of clomiphene citrate and ovariectomy. In the luminal epithelium and glandular epithelium and endometrial stroma regions, few PCNA-immunoreactive cells were observed. PCNA reactivity was estimated for the luminal and glandular epithelium and for the stromal cells. Treatment of clomiphene citrate decreased the proliferation of the luminal epithelial cell and stromal cells to the same extent as ovariectomy. Vitiligo and alopecia areata present an excellent opportunity to f ocus on the effect of impaired appearance on the lives of the persons with these diseases. Emotional stress has precipitated vitiligo and alopecia areata in some patients. Twenty-eight patients suffering from alopecia areata and vitiligo and twenty healthy persons at ages between ten and sixty underwent psychological tests of examination with special regard to verification of their psychiatric symptoms. Surveys were distributed to 45 advisors of pre-P.T. students. Nineteen surveys were returned and six respondents were chosen for an interview. Interpretations of the data were made using a qualitative coding system.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible differences in maximal forward reaching distance in children with unilateral upper extremity amputations while wearing and not wearing a prosthesis using the Functional Reach (FR) test. Trends were noted between FR scores of these children and children without disabilities.

Four children, ages 5-8, completed the FR test using the intact arm under two conditions, “prosthesis-off” and “prosthesis-on”. A paired, two-tailed t test (a = .05) was used to determine the statistical significance of the means of differences in FR scores between the two conditions.

An anonymous questionnaire was sent to a random sampling of the total female enrollment at a midwest university. A Healthcare Concern Score was tabulated on 230 completed questionnaires. King’s Theory of Goal Attainment provided the basis for this descriptive, two group comparison study design to determine if sexual assault evidence kits prepared by sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE) would be more complete than evidence kits prepared by non-sexual assault nurse examiners. A convenience sample of 100 evidence kits (41 SANE and 59 non-SANE) were analyzed using the Evidence Kit Audit Tool consisting of 18 questions that reflect the standards for submission of evidence.

The kits submitted by SANEs were significantly (t=5.6, df=71, p<.001) more complete (mean=93%) than those completed by non-SANEs (mean=77%). Corrected Chi-square comparisons of the two groups on whether or not individual items of evidence were complete indicated significant differences in 11 out of 18 items. A higher percentage of SANEs completed each item. Therefore, the hypothesis of sexual assault evidence kits prepared by a SANE will be more complete than sexual assault kits prepared by a non-SANE was supported.

There is no significant difference in the relationship between oral or vaginal metronidazole and oral clindamycin in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis (BV) in early pregnancy and the re-occurrence rate of BV at 35 to 37 weeks gestation. Treatment of BV in pregnancy has been shown to decrease the preterm delivery rate saving millions of dollars and improving the health of infants.
