A new approach is proposed to characterize and discriminate temporomandi-bular joint vibrations. It consists of three steps. First, signals recorded during each cycle of mandibular movement are unified into a single time series. Second, this time series is embedded in some multidimensional space. Third, nonlinear analysis methods are applied to extract the pertinent signal characteristics. In this way two groups of signals have been characterized; those in the first group were recorded from patients whose post-treatment results werebad and the ones in the second group were recorded from patients whose post-treatment results were good. Objectives: This study was performed to determine the frequency and distribution of risk factors for coronary heart disease in people living in the Baskil district of Elazığ. Methods: From a population of 905 individuals aged 35 years and over, 388 were randomly selected. Selection of subjects was done with official records of the Baskil Health Care Center. Although repeated invitations were made, 32 individuals (29 men and 3 women) did not participate. Thus, 356 subjects were enrolled. This study was planned to compare recurrence of goiters after thyroidectomy in patients who received prophylactic levothyroxine and patients who received no therapy. One hundred and twenty-six patients had been treated by bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy in the General Surgery Clinic of Karadeniz Technical University from 1987 to 1992. Eithy-eight of these patients were included in this study while the remaining patients were excluded as they were non contactable. They were divided into two groups. For most infectious diseases, increased formation of reactive oxygen species is secondary to the primary disease process. Some microorganisms are highly susceptible to exogenous reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) remove H 2 O 2 , and selenium is requird for the activity of GSH-Px. Therefore, to assess the status of GSH-Px and selenium in cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), we determined serum selenium concentration and blood GSH-Px activity in 52 patients with CL and in 38 healthy controls. Cyclosporine-A (CsA) is widely used to prevent organ rejection in recipients of transplanted organs and also in the treatment of various systemic diseases. CsA has a number of side effects, including gingival overgrowth (GO). However, the pathogenesis of CsA-induced GO remains uncertain. It has been postulated that CsA alters fibroblast activity. CsA is transported in plasma by binding to lipid components. We have assessed tracheal intubating conditions in 45 ASA I-II children, aged 4-14 years undergoing elective ear, nose and throat surgery. After the induction dose of propofol 2.5 mgkg -1 , group I received alfentanil 10 µgkg -1 , group II received alfentanil 20 µgkg -1 and group III received atracurium 0.5 mgkg-1 for tracheal intubation. In the novel approach suggested here, we examined the use of polypeptide probes selected from artificial peptide libraries for the identification of the differences in dsDNA sequences which are potential targets for the genetic diseases. Pyk-2 is a protein tyrosine kinase, highly expressed in human hippocampus, dentate gyrus and olfactory bulb. In this study, polyclonal antibodies against the C-terminal of pyk-2, starting from Pro-759, were generated by injecting rabbits with the bacterially expressed GST fusion construct, generated by cloning the C-terminal domain of pyk-2 into pGEX-3X vector and affinity purification to increase the specificity of recognition. Arginine metabolism by mycoplasmas has been reported to be correlated with pathogenicity. Since a clinically important mycoplasma; M. fermentans hydrolyses arginine as an energy source, the arginine metabolism amongst M. fermentans strains belonging to different isolation sites was investigated. Arginine hydrolysis was detected by the increase in NH 4+ concentration, measured using an NH 4+ -sensitive electrode. The method proved simple to use and gave reproducible results. In broth medium, arginine and glucose were both shown to act as energy sources for growth. It was also shown that, in contrast to previous work, glucose inhibited arginine hydrolysis during growth. Malate Dehydrogenase (MDH) and Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) activities were demonstrated in the mitochondrial and cytosolic fractions of an intestinal cestode, Taenia saginata, and then the in vitro effects of three anthelminthics, albendazole, niclosamide, and piperazine on these enzymes were investigated. Endogeonus opioid peptides play an important role in the generation of the pre-ovulatory LH surge. We investigated the interrelationship between the oploid and indolaminergic systems in the regutalion of LH secretion, and the involvement of \mu-and \kappa-opioid subtypes in this process. Concsious female rats bearing cannula in the femoral artery were injected intraperitoneally with \mu-(diamorphine) and \kappa -(U-50488H) opioid agonists either alone or with their respective antagonists, naloxone and MR2266, on pro-oestrus. The effects of cyclosporin A (CsA) on rat pancreatic islet \beta and D cells and plasma glucose levels at doses of 50 mg/kg body weight applied for 20 days were investigated. Fifteen Swiss Albino rats were used as the study group and 5 were the control group. Tympanic membrane perforations arise from a variety of causes. Some of them require myringoplasty. In this study, we used hyaluronic acid, a polysaccharide with high-molecular- weight which may be obtained commercially and affects modulations of cell function. An experimental myringoplasty was performed on rats in which a chronic dry tympanic membrane perforation was formed. While physiological saline was embedded in Gelfoam ® which was supported under and over the graft, in group 1, hyaluronic acid embedded gelfoam was used in group 2. The effect of primaquine on the enzymatic antioxidant defence mechanisms of erythrocytes were determined by measuring the activities of the below enzymes, before and after 30 minutes of incubation of hemolyzates with 1 mM primaquine at 37°C. Among the enzymes studied glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase seemed the most sensitive enzyme; 57 % and 78 % inhibition at zero (due to the binding of primaquine to NADP binding site) and 30 minutes of incubation (due to the reactive oxygen species), respectively. Since most secreening tests are not 100% accurate, the proportion of subjects screened positive in such a test cannot be used as an estimate of the population prevalence. Methods which take sensitivity and the specificity into consideration should be employed in such circumstances. Estimation of the population prevalence as defined by Gartand Buck may produce results which are outside the range of 0 to 1. Cardiac troponin T (TnT) is a regulatory contractile protein not normally found in blood. Minor elevations of TnT in patients with unstable angina have been associated with an increased risk of subsequent death or Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI). We used a neewly developed enzyme immunoassay for TnT to determine whether its presence in the serum of patients with unstable angina was a prognostic indicator. This study was designed to investigate the anxiolytic effects as well as acceptance of spinal anesthesia after rectally administered midazolam, ketamine and atropine for postoperative sedation in children. Spinal anesthesia is an easy and safe method in the pediatric age group especially for outpatients. Spinal anesthesia was administered to 20 patients, aged between 2 months and 2 years, premedicated with 0.5 mg/kg midazolam + 5 mg/kg ketamine + 0.02 mg/kg atropine rectally. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the efficacy of aerobic exercises versus strengthening, stretching and mobilization exercises in patients with subacute or chronic low back pain. Forty patients were recruited for the study and randomly allocated to two groups. All patients were evaluated at admission, mid-treatment and termination of the program by visual analog scale (VAS), face scale, weekly analgesic intake and Million visual analog scale for pain. It has been estimated that between 2% to 28% of the general adult population has radiographic evidence of elongated styloid process. In adults, the mean radiographic lenght of the styloid process is 20 to 30 mm and its tip is located between the external and internal carotid arteries, just lateral to the tonsillar fossa. Eagle's syndrome occurs when an elongated styloid process or ossified stylohyoid ligament causes recurrent throat pain or foreign body sensation, dysphagia, or facial pain. One of the factors affecting the accuracy of readings of blood pressure is the equipment used. Defects or inaccuracy of aneroid sphygmomanometers may be source of error in blood pressure measurement. We inspected 100 sphygmomanometers for physical defects and assessed their accuracy against a standard mercury manometer at four different pressure points. 46 of the 100 sphygmomanometers were determined to be intolerant (deviation from the mercury manometer by greater than±3 mm Hg at two or more of the test points).
